I am heading to Kearney a week from Saturday to visit my daughter and 3 month old grandson. My wife knows I will only go if I can take my fishing gear. Does anyone have any input on where to try in that area? I don't need any hotspot s just a place where I could catch and release some fish on safe ice

Those I-80 lakes are all sandpits, and have groundwater movement through 'em. They're nefarious for their sketchy ice conditions. If you go out, be VERY careful

I have been driving from Grand island to Holdrege this week and there a lot of open water. Not saying there is no safe but be careful.

There were people fishing Coot Shallows, Kea West, and Kea Lake yesterday. I think the east sides of the Fort Kearney pits should also be ok, but as stated above, the west ends can get a little sketchy.
