The bait was in a pond I take it?
Lack of oxygen, or too cold maybe?
Fish tend to seek out comfortable water layers
to live, the conditions may have been to severe
where you had them, and caused their demise.

it wouldn't be the temperature, because all the waters are about 34 degrees in the winter. if its a small pond, i to suspect oxygen deprivation.

Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

If there is current that could do it. If there is no current, I suspect a lack of dissolved oxygen.

I dont have alot of bait, but what i do...with 2 or 3 doz..i take a regular run of the mill trap, close up the two ends, and toss it in a brook out back, havent had a problem at all, since I mostly jig with artificials, i went 3 weeks with out checking em, and they were all alive...think the current helps..
