If it warms up quick and there is a lot of melt the outer edge of the ice will be junk in no time. The outlet on storm lake has already busted through and water was going over the dam. Im guessing most people will be done ice fishing by March 24th and the IGL will be done April 2.

The 7 day forecast shows no sign of winter slowing down. April is a ways off but I am gonna guess, last day of safe ice at Okoboji is April 10.

The ice on small ponds and Lake Macbride usually goes out early the second week of March around here.

Unless the ten-day and fifteen-day forecasts for SE Iowa are not just wrong, but totally wrong, we will be ice fishing for at least another three weeks around Iowa City.

I won't guarantee it, but another four weeks of ice-fishing around IC is not out of the question.

You are gonna wear waders on the ice? Okay but you are gonna get some funny looks.

Rain should melt the snow.  And the lows at night will refreeze that slop into more ice.  I hope! :o
20+ on most area pits around here and 25+ almost 30 in spots at Clear Lake.  Fishin gets hot this time of year.

I dug through my fishing records from back to the winter of 2002-3 (yup, I actually keep track of these things): the last times I fished on the ice in Johnson County were March 7 (2003), February 16 ('04), February 20 ('05), February 26 ('06), March 4 ('07), March 12 ('08), and March 4 ('09).

Those are the last times I fished on ice down here, not necessarily when the ice went out; some of those years, especially the ones where I last hit hardwater in February, were years I probably didn't have time to get out on late ice.

On March 14, 2006, one of the Johnson County ponds I fish through the ice was completely open: I didn't write things like this down before that year.

On March 29, 2007, I fished open water on Macbride; I did not write down, and probably didn't know, exactly when the ice went out that year.

On March 29, 2008, Macbride was mostly open, but there was still some mushy ice, according to my notes.

On March 6, 2009, I wrote that the ice was gone in Johnson County--two days after fishing on what I wrote was bad ice on a small pond.

As of today, we still have plenty of good ice around Iowa City, so it is already not an early ice-out year. Based on the ten and fifteen-day forecasts, we are going to start losing ice this coming weekend, but unless the rain being forecast for Saturday is heavy, the next week still looks good, with a little caution.

My guess now as to the end of ice-fishing around here is March 11, based on the forecast, which calls for a lot of rain next week. If we get less rain than predicted, we'll get a few more days beyond the 11th.

So, ice out will be a little later than normal around IC, but not as late as I was hoping.

Hey! Look at the brighter side of things. When the ice melts, we can go out on boats, fish for crappie and walleye bite should be good!  ;D

No 40 even forcasted yet here, it will be awhile yet. I'm guessing April 13th at the earliest. Was -2 here this morn but rebounded nicely to about 32.

I haven't been on Macbride since January, so I don't have any first-hand info.

What I've heard, and the reason I haven't fish Macbride in almost two months, is that it is a slooooow bite, for the most part. The ice is fine as of now, I'd bet, but like I said if the weather forecast is right it will probably not be good in a week if we get a lot of rain.
