Short season. Long range forecast doesn’t look good here in SW Pa. Definitely not getting on hard water anytime soon😖

This is my fear as well.  However, when I started watching the long term winter forecasts in October, they were predicting harsh cold doom and gloom...which for us is fantastic.  Now they're saying the opposite.  I'm just going to hope and hold my breath that the weather predictors are just as wrong as they always are.

The “experts” called for 3-5” of snow and then .25” of ice for us yesterday. We got .5” of ice(NO snow). ::)

That being said, I hope they are right on this:

Yeah, the forecast here shows a good cold snap tonight through Saturday, but then it goes back up into the 40's.  Looks like it will be January until we start building real ice around me.
My Setup:  Otter XL sled on a smitty.  10" Strikemaster Lithium 50 Volt auger.  Clam Bigfoot XL 2000 hub.  Garmin Striker 5 Ice Bundle.

I wish I could!  My buddy and I talked about maybe making a trip after Christmas.  I was thinking maybe Tioga County, but the Poconos might work.

I know...I'm just jonesing.  I walked out on the dock on my pond to try to cut a few holes with my new Nero handheld auger today.  Not really thick enough to get a nice hole, but definitely over an inch of clear hard ice.  With today and tonite's colder temps, it could be well on its way to building decent clear ice.  Let's just hope the weather man is wrong about those 40 degree temps.  I live near Arthur btw.

I bought a float suit several years ago and my goal is to NEVER test (it’s buoyancy!) ;D

"The Poconos" is vaguely specific. Can you narrow that down a little please?

I posted over on the Reports section. But that was Promised Land Upper Lake. Lower lake should be similar and if there is 4" at Promised Land, then there is likely 5 or 6" on Tobyhanna and Gouldsboro since they are a little higher elevation. Probably safe ice up in Wayne County too. Think Belmont, Upper Woods, Duck Harbor etc...………………..

I must say my float siut worked very good. It definatly was worth the money. I bobbed like a cork & rolled out onto the solid ice easily. Probably looked like a walrus flopping around. I hardly got wet too !!

No such thing as safe ice, ever. Especially when it's only 3" of bubbly ice with an inch of slush ice on top. I drilled 10 holes up there yesterday and most looked ok for very early ice, but 2 didn't look so nice and I left that area alone. Be careful if you guys get out for the next couple weeks. The Spud is your friend. And if the ice doesn't look right, trust yet gut.

Ice is coming.  Some of Sayers had skim coat yesterday and temps at night are going to be in 20s.  The 40 degree temps will only last few hours and when are is capped, ice can take some abuse.  I'm planning on going Saturday out on I've in centre county.  Nez
