Title: storage tips for spikes
Post by: kb on Jan 03, 2023, 06:58 AM
One company says to keep them refrigerated in zip lock baggies, and others dont keep in a zip lock for oxygen depletion.  What makes them last longer?  Do they need oxygen deprivation?

TIA

I just keep them in the bait puck in the fridge and they last fine for me.

Zip lock bag. Squeeze all of the air out.  Store in crisper of fridge. Take only what you need for the day. Do not put unused ones back in the bag. They will last for MONTHS. Been doing it this way for many years. No issues.

Usually I order from Jada bait, and they come in zip lock baggies.  This time I ordered from Knutsons, and they came in perforated plastic containers.  I was wondering if I were doing it wrong all these years.  lol

Thanks!

I'm not sure why Knutson's ships them that way but mine came in same packaging this year.  I dump em out and double bag em with as much air as possible removed.  From my experience they keep much longer that way.  33-35F.

I turned the temp to the next coldest setting and it cost me 100s of cacooned spikes oops

Oops.

Looks like another year without ice in my area.   My buddies chickens will have a nice snack.

Last year my spikes lasted from January to April in double sandwich bags in the fridge. Never got any ice.    Kept the temps in the upper 30’s without much loss.
