Title: Ice Fisherman's worst enemy.
Post by: Strike Lead on Oct 08, 2006, 08:49 AM
So....you're out there having a quiet moment on the ice when here it comes. Something to tick you off. Was it:

1. Snowmobiles? Ripping in and out of your tip ups at 60 mph.
or

2. Tourist? "What are you doing? Catching anything? How thick is the ice?
or
3. Another fisherman honing in on your paradise. As he approaches you find out quickly that he's a "jabber jaw".
or
4. Wild ice dogs looking for a snack.
or
5. Wind, rain or other weather change.

In my neck of the woods we ice fishermen absolutely hate snow mobiles. I think they hate us too, as we make all of these little holes on their pretty ice surface. I often feel like I'm sitting on a bucket in the middle of an interstate highway.

Thanks for letting me vent.............in advance of the new season.

1. I have never had problems with snow machines. MOST, not all, are responsible safe opperators. I cant condemn a whole group for a few water heads.

2. Minnesota nice trumps being annoyed with tourists. As long as they have a good story to tell, a cold beer, or a hot cup of coffee they are welcome to any info I have. I have had this philosophy bite me in the arse when they return the next day with everyone they have ever met. :-\.

3. Same applies as #2

4. We deal with wild dogs harshly in these parts, especially in the winter. If you don't deal with those mangy flea bags, you will have no deer left. The law enforcement around here tell us to smoke any dog at large destroying property or running wildlife.

5. Wind and rain are no fun on the ice :P, but a weather change can stir up the pike ;)

My vote for ice fishermans worst enemy would be WARM WEATHER!! :%$#!:

#1 and #3

Nothing slows fishing down as fast as a snowmobile.
Fish shut right down for 15 -30 min after.
Horning in fisherman are ok, but the sound of a brigade
of augers, that's frustrating.

Not much usually ever bothered me until i had a tip-up ran over during a contest a couple years back. contest and snowmobiles just don't mix

This would have made a great Poll...

On my lake the weather is an issue, wind, wind and more wind. I maybe had 4 days of ice and open water fishing where wind did not come into play.

As for snowmobiler, not an issue on my home lake, but deficiently a problem on a few other lakes I fish.

I apologize to you and to everyone else I've offended.  I was once that kind of guy, but Jesus has changed me.  I am a new creation, and I thank God for second chances.  About the only thing that ticks me off about ice fishing is the competitive spirit.  I find now that it's better to have fun than to catch the most fish.  Although, being skunked ticks me off also!

Where i live Snowmobiles are terribly common. But they never ever come close to ice fishermen. Dont ask me why. I dont mind conversation either. What does annoy me is when guys set up 20' away and never say a word. I have invited many people over when they are not catching fish but I am. They are just fish after all. Warm weather doesnt really help ice fishing thats for sure.

What irritates me is guys that think they own the whole lake. They set up tip-ups all the way across the opening of a bay area and then get pissy pants when other fisherman pass through there set-up to get into the bay.

Also, guys that have not sharpened or tuned-up their auger since they bought it in 1972.Takes them 45 minutes to get it to run and another 30 minutes per hole to get them drilled.(usually the loudest augers on the lake)

Anyone who is inconsiderate, whether is be someone on a machine, letting their dogs run, etc....Although, the bright side is its always a great opportunity to teach the kids whats right and what isnt, by letting them witness first hand buffoonery.  But its always amazing that just when you think youve seen it all, someone is able to trump other stupidity.  How some of these people think its ok to do what they do, is beyond me.  Maybe they were never witness to such stuff and taught properly....go figure....wheres the ice!!??

My worst enemy(ies)

1.  Your buddy is still sleeping when you go to pick him up at 6am.
2.  The guy that really wanted to try ice fishing and then starts making hints about leaving the ice an hour after you arrived at the lake.
3.  Remembering I left my thermos of coffee on the kitchen counter after driving an hour to the lake.

The number one thing that is the worst is "The season is to short". The number two is "The lock is froze up on the ice shack door". Has anybody ever locked his truck keys in the ice shack and of course the key to the shack is on the same key ring. Number three, "The auger is flooded and you can't find the wrench to take out the plug".
Title: Re: Ice Fisherman's worst enemy.
Post by: icy mike on Oct 09, 2006, 03:00 PM
"The lock is froze up on the ice shack door"

To add on to this...  It sucks that you even have to lock your shanty at all.  I can still remember friends having shacks out on the lake and NOT locking them up.  No one bothered them.  Now, even up here in Alaska, you have to lock your shack up or it will be trashed, items stolen, or both.  There used to be a guy up here that rented out shacks on a popular lake but his shacks kept getting burnt down >:(.  That sucks.

# 3.  I hate close fishers.  Stay far enough away from me so that I don't have to listen to you.  If you are close enough that I can hear you you will hear me, doubt I'll be too polite.  I know that this is a free country, and no, I do not own the lake in any way but just stay away.  I guess I'm kinda ignorant that way but I will not do it to anyone else either.

The biggest complaint I hear is snowmobiles driving too fast on the lake.  This is usually from people that walked out on, or drove out on the hard pack trail made by the sleds, and then they drill holes right in the middle of the "trail" (or 5' off it) and start fishing.  Well, in Ontario, there is no speed limit on lakes.  Stay off the main trail and quit whining.  100-120mph is fast but it is also legal.  Sleds at high speeds are rarely breaking trail........ And no, I do not have a sled that is "trail worthy"  They are just old and decrepid.  I am not the one flying across the lake.

being a lone ice fisherman on a 30 acre shallow bluegill lake (8 inches of ice maximum) when four guys show up @ around 10 a.m. with four sleds / three power augers / then proceed to drill an 8 x 10 hole grid starting right next to your portable shanty, then continue to make enough noise to be heard a mile away. THANX for letting me vent.

WIND...  would have to be my worst enemy on the ice, he never leaves you alone somedays, and freezes your tip-ups into the holes, blows your brand new jigging bucket seat away in the first 5 minutes of it's first trip..   a close second is inconsiderate people,  whether it be the guy on his snowmobile weaving through your trapline like he was a shalom skier, a loose dog toppling traps with no owner around, or a spot invaders that isn't friendly...etc...... ;D

TRASH ON THE ICE FROM FISHERMEN!!!!!!!!

I could care less about most of the items on the list.
But would not like someone to fish a string of hole I cut and have covered.
I like to hole hop if fishing gets slow.
I keep the area small and not on prime structure.
Sometime next to a tip up (walleye fishing).

As brujharr said 5% of snowmobilers ruin the reputation of the other snowmobilers and the same thing goes for ice fishermen.
       1. The guy who craps down his jigging hole or dumps trash.
       2. The guy who leaves trash at the landing (coffee cups, plastic wrappers soda bottles)
       3. The guy that chops fire wood on someone elses land.
       4. The guy who takes his truck on the ice and starts doing donuts runs over your traps and smashes into your ice shack just when you finally get that big one to bite.

I could care less about people getting close as long as their not obnoxiously loud and considerate. One year my buddies brother put his shack out then the next day some jerk put his 10 feet away and they were the only 3 shacks for miles. So when he found the shack unlocked he dropped a coil down one of their holes inside. The shack was moved a good distance away quickly. Then 3 years later at the same spot, some people felt the need to drill holes everywhere around our shack all day. Then the next day we weren't there but they were and they drilled a hole a foot in front of our door.

Then last year our first time out we were fishing the same spot out shack had been the past few years and a family felt the need to drill a million holes around us, we were fishing outside, then take the kids for snowmobile rides in circles around us for a couple hours. I didn't see them catch one fish though while i caught a few. It made my day.

Living in Central Saskatchewan, I would have to say wind and extreme cold(-25C) is probably by biggest enemy.  I usually never have to put up with anything else on the list.

Iv'e never had a problem with wild dogs, however I did have a lone Coyote come right up to me one time.  It didn't attack me or anything, but it didn't keep it's distance either.  It was a weekday and I was the only one on the lake and it probably came within 10 maybe 15 feet from me.  I think it was hopeing I was gonna catch some fish and feed it.  I never did catch anything that day.

Luckily for me its illegal to drive vehicles on the ice here in PA so I don't have to put up with the snowmobiles. Ask anyone who attended the NJ get together 2 serasons ago how bad they were though....They were going full speed right through a ton of people and came way too close for comfort to many guys just out having some fun.

Lack of ice and the guys who walk out to me and ask if the ice is safe or not are tied for first.

We have a bay < Braddocks Bay > like that here !
Under normal conditions they have a lot of room to go ride their sleds but they still insist on going rite through everyone and their tip-up's .
I don't think anyone minds the fact that sleds are their sport of choice but all we as fisherman ask is show a little respect and courtesy and stay away from our lines especially when you have a mess of room to ride away from the fisherman .

Had a guy hit one of mine a couple of years ago and he did stop and offer to pay for it if it were broke but it was ok . Told him it was nice that he stopped and asked and I appreciated it but please do us all a favor and just ride in the open areas before someone lost their temper because he was really making a lot of people mad .
He was cool about it and rode elsware .

I would have to say the snowmobiler that goes from bar to bar back and forth across the lake.I fish alot in the dark for walleye on chautauqua lake and have had them come within feet of my clam!!! I actually this year bought blinking lights to fasten to the outside of my clam.I have no clue how far away they can see an ice hut, the huts do have reflective tape on them. They are usually going about 60mph.
I also hate it when the ice is 4 inches thick and the goof ball wants to pull up and park next to me and ask me how thick the ice is.I usually say not thick enough to be sitting still with that machine so could you please move.(have actually had this happen to often)

What I have issues with is when the ice just gets safe enough to put the shak out , but not good enough to drill holes under it with out the water flooding you out, and when you get out there some guy drilled 5 holes within 3 feet from the shak and now your sitting in water up to your ankles, so then you go to move the shak with the atv, you suddenly slip and fall on your arsh.  Makes for a quick trip back home to change. >:(.       Almost forgot about the owner of the boat launch not tending to his dogs, and having these   4 legged vaulchers stealing ever peice of food out of your 4 yr old daughters hands, and knocking her down.  But I know this someone that found some old sausage and feed them to the dogs.  Rumor had I it they had the poop poos  in the house.

I guess my question would be "Where did ya get the sausage?". :woot: ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)2 >:D

Mu brother had a dog that used to love to pee on ice rods and tipups. I guess dogs running at large would be one of mine.

In Wyoming it is "Greenies", people from the Front Range of Colorado. Because they don't fish the lakes on a regular basis they tend to set up right next to someone with Wyoming tags on their trucks. I riles me when there is 5000 acres of hard water, two shacks set up on the whole lake and they put their high dollar Frabils within a stones throw...errrrrr!

Ice Fisherman's worst enemy
*  summer
*  People who ask "How thick is the ice?"
*  People who drive their four-wheelers right next to your tip-ups
*  thin ice (having to pull your brother out of Little Sturgeon bay)
*  forgeting your license when the warden stops by.
