Best luck ive ever had crappie fishin was with a small shiner on a number 6 set down  about  9 inches from split shot.  Set the split shot on bottom or if minnow is dead jig it.

I knew what you meant riverrat.  I used to have good luck in Saratoga lake when i lived out your way.

I have been trying to get my kids over to Chautauqua lake to catch a few but the ice has not cooperated.   Anyone know of any other good spots in wny for crappie?   Silver lake maybe?

this is what works for me at this time of the year, try to fish the north shore[water is warmer]
look for cattails, trees in water,DROPOFFS, WHEN YOU LOCATE them. fish about 1ft over there
heads[eyes are skew up. almost all food is from above
the jigs i use are bibetts in black=green/red,some hair jigs, with one spike
the lake you are fishing makes the difference,i keep changing jigs about every 15mins
till i find out what they want
