Storing Tipups
« on: Nov 04, 2011, 02:15 PM »
I'm just wondering what people use to stop the spools from unraveling while they are packed up.  I don't like getting on the ice only to have to untangle line.  What can i do.  I've tried a rubberband, but they break easily in the cold.  Maybe a Velcro strap around the spool to keep the hook wrapped up.  Any other ideas?

thanks

I adjust the length of my line so the hook goes into the hole made when they bend out the trip lever, the triangle ! If it doesn't have one, a 3/16th drill bit will make one ! Just my .02, good luck !

I went the Velcro route last year and it worked awesome. I bought some colored velcro "computer wire wraps" off eBay for 99 cents. Came in a pack of six, which is convenient because the most tip-ups I can fish is six (at least in NH.)

Give that a shot.

I made my own. Bought a pack of velcro and cut them to size. Leave an inch overlap so you put that over the hook.

Lousy cell pix.

Swung by Dick's in Natick today. They have some of their hardwater stuff out and they actually sell specifically cut Velcro strips for tip-ups. $3.99 + tax seems a bit steep to me.

I dont have tip ups (yet) but i do use velcro for all other gear, soft and hard water.
Got a roll online and just cut as needed.

I think I read people discussing that last year and was gonna try it until I fell into some of that velcro. Elastics are my backup plan.

I use those fabric-coated elastics for open water reels so the elastic doesn't melt on the line. Those elastics are waaaaaaaaaay better. When my girl drops one in the street, I say "That's mine now. You don't want to put dirty elastics in your hair, do you?"

I got a roll of Velcro, and it is looking like it will do the trick.  Also, Capt shay, that looks like a good idea too.  I may experiment with that too!

For years, I've been using Velcro that I get for free at the supermarket.  They come wrapped around a head of loose leaf lettuce.

I cut them to length (2x around the spool) and make a hole for the hook in each end so they can be started at either end.  When I take them off the spool, I wrap them around the top of the upright tip up post. They come in green and yellow and they contrast with snow or a dark shoreline.  So they help me see the tip ups better in low light conditions.  The splash of color also help me identify my tipups.

I've also used a wrap for a temporary fix for a lost flag.

Eat some healthy food for a five weeks and get enough to do a legal set of tipups to start the season.   @)

I've been using elastics for years, and I replace them at the start of the season. They are the 1/4" wide 3" long type.

I use velcro bindings for my 2 piece rods, and will probably make the change for the tip-ups.

I will be pulling my gear out of storage within the next week or so so I can get prepped for the season!

Beaver dams are coming with a rubber ring on the flag.  That way you can hook your treble on it and spin your spool tight.  Sticking the flag in the spool will hold it tight.  Nothing fancy but it should work.  I used velcro cord wraps last year.  They worked good but I always seemed to loose them.

I wrapped them around the cord of my ice safety picks when they weren't on the tip ups. I mostly fish by myself, so I always have those things around my neck.

I also used to fight with that. I switched to a box tip up. It has a cork to store the hook and the reel locks with a clicker. No more tangled tip ups for me. They also are super sensitive so they seem to catch more fish. Take a look.

I have one heritage that has a cork circle on the outside of the reel, which is cool.  I know kittery sells sets of 5 of them that have a sticky backing.
*edit* found them on heritage's website http://www.heritagetraps.com/05013.html

On my others I put the hook in one of the holes on the side of the reel.  If the hook doesn't line up, I unwind a few feet and wind it back on there differently (like if the first time I distributed it real evenly, I will load in more to one side) and it never is a problem for me to get it to line up with a hole.

I like those velcro straps though.  May have to pick some up for the IHs with the metal reels!!
