Title: LAKE CHAMPLAIN ICE CONDITIONS THREAD
Post by: the_doctor on Jan 06, 2024, 01:26 PM
Long live Ice Shanty! So much better than Facebook!

Feel free to share Lake Champlain conditions here.

I went for a drive this morning.
Swanton, Church Rd - 2". All of Missiquoi is frozen.
Highgate, Shipyard Rd - 2"
Carry Bay - 1-2" looks pretty sketchy
Dillenback /, Alburgh Passage - appeared to be barely skimmed over, did not check thickness
Pretty much anywhere else up north here - open water according to a friend

Hopefully I'll be fishing Champlain next weekend.

I went for a similar drive, but went south to north thru the islands. We probably passed each other!
Concur on Carry Bay and Dillenbeck.
Keeler is mostly open.
Sandbar has ice a ways out from the access, but didn’t look good enough for me to walk out on
I also checked Colchester Pond since it’s right by my house- completely frozen over, but only 2-1/2 inches where I checked a few yards off the boat launch.
This week’s weather is not looking good…

But the coming wind storm will throttle all current ice...

Yup…..another challenging start.

Saw a few folks out on church road yesterday. Was about 3-4” of ice with 3-4” of snow on top.

Careful out there!

If it helps……I fished Metcalf Pond Fri and Sat. Drilled over 40 holes from the access off to the right. Consistent 4” until you get closer to the middle (tree branch sticking out). Went to 2.5” pretty fast.  Spoke to a local and was told there are lots of springs!

Two very light bites is all. Range was 2-8’ of water.

Good luck!

Woodyvt

With the colder weather this week, any of the bays locking up yet (Dillenbeck, Squires, Carry, Pelots, Missisquoi, Hog Island/Hog Point)?

6” at the Sandy Point access on Missisquoi Bay, caught one small pike. Met someone from Chazy that was coming out and said there was 6” up around Sandy Point.

Tabor Point is frozen but only 2” at shore and the ice looks really sketchy.

5” at Dillenbeck 500’ from the launch and there were a couple of guys on quads well past where I checked.

Almost all open water driving route 2 through the islands.

Be safe everyone!

Below zero and dead calm here this morning it had to have made ice last night. High today is supposed to be 12 degrees.

There was a car 100 yards out on Keeler bay. Crazy

Jeez, really?!?!? People need to use their heads...need I mention the tragic events that happened driving vehicles on Keeler's last year?

Today...6.5 inches at Dillenback. Surprisingly few people out but I guess with the cold it makes sense. Slow bite, few perch and a pike today.

Coming up for a weekend trip on Feb 8th, staying near Maquam Bay.  Have been nervous as hell the past couple weeks with the less than ideal temps and rain.

Any recent info from either Dillenbeck, Maquam/Hog Point, or Missisquoi?  Forecast looks ok starting this coming weekend but wondering how much is up there now after all the crappy ish weather.

Beautiful morning at Dillenbeck today with 10” of black ice but when we left at 11:00 a big pressure crack had formed near shore and we had to walk way north to get off. Tried waving down people on the ice to let them know but nobody noticed so I let the game warden know. Hopefully everyone gets off safe.

It has been frozen all the way out to the opening for a couple weeks or more. I've seen a few people out on it.

I was working in the area and crossed the Missisguoi bridge today. Not a single car in the parking lot or anyone on the ice as far as you could see. Also, fairly close to the boat ramp there was a 10'x10' area taped off where it looked like something went through the ice. Be safe, stay home!

Thanks for the update. That taped off area was used by SFD a couple weeks ago for water rescue training.

Any idea if the ice held up around Hog Island/Swanton through the heatwave? Headed up this weekend and am hoping if it didn't break up there might be some fishable ice by Saturday 2/17?

We went to Miss Bay last weekend. Got there Fri morning and had about 9" of ice but the temps never got below freezing the whole weekend. A little bit of rain on Saturday and by Sunday there was maybe 6" left. A camper getting pulled by a quad started falling in across the bay. No one was hurt and they were able to get their gear out but were unable to get the camper out by the time we left around noon.

The fishing was pretty good all 3 days. Mostly yellow perch with some pike on Fri. Saturday was mostly pike with the biggest being over 9lb and a 6.4lb walleye after dark which was released. Sunday was a mixed bag of yellows and pike. Almost all the fish from our group were released. Some guys kept some perch and a few of the medium sized pike. We were fishing shallow from 3-5'. Edges were pretty shot by Sunday and flooded with water but we had 8 campers parked right on the edge of the water in about 18" of water under the ice right to land.

All open water at Port Henry.  So your assumption especially with the wind direction today is a reasonable one.

I heard from my parents in Alburg that the ice was good near the pump house down Lake street . Lots of fisherman fishing Thursday from the cove to windmill point. Thursday night high winds and it broke up and now open water in front of their house . Odd year for making ice . 🥶

Anyone been out from Sandy Point?  Heading up in 2 weeks and was wondering how the ice has held up north of the bridge.

Fished Hog Island in Swanton over the weekend (2/17-2/18)... open water at the bridge but further down there was 5-8 inches of good ice. Fairly productive, got into some pike and perch, nothing huge.

Tight lines!

Took a ride to St. Albans yesterday. Saw 6 trucks at the boat launch, most were fishing close. Wind was whipping pretty good. 3 vehicles at Kill Kare, saw 2 people way out. Ice was pretty thin there not to long ago. I didn’t fish. The ramp side looked iffy. I’d like to hear or read a good ice report before venturing out.

Fished Tabor Point yesterday morning for a couple of hours with my son.  Not a banner day but we caught a few keepers on 8" of ice.  Nice day to end the season made even nicer by the guys who gave us half a bucket of yellow perch on our way out.  Not sure who they are but we're very thankful that they shared!
