puppy needs a name
« on: Nov 21, 2005, 05:40 PM »
as some of you might remember this past spring i started a topic when my family put down our dog. i got allot of responces from allot of you which made the decision easy on me and I'm still greatfull to all that responded.and i found out there is allot of dog lovers here. after a long wait our pup will be ready next sunday and since it seems like we are never going to get ice this year I'll have allot of time to spend with the new pup. but heres the thing we can't decide on a name for him. so heres some info male 8wk Britany and he will be a bird hunter. so anyone out there have some ideas that will help find a name for him. or how did  you come up with your dogs name.

i know someone with a male brittany named kernel i mean like the military rank. not sure how its spelled. by the way i have a 10yr. old brittany named tessie. she is a awesome dog. if youve never had a brittany before youre in for a treat! youll be like that woman in that comercial that has a tennis ball machine to throw balls for her dog  because shes so tired of throwing! lol! they really have alot of energy! be careful around vehicles. brits are notoriously car stupid. i lost my first brit to a loaded semi. good luck with your puppy. im sure he will be a awesome addition to youre family.

Sometimes a name will almost suggest itself once you have him, and be based on some characteristic or action.  We couldn't decide on a name for our first dog, a mixed terrier, and were booting names around one evening.  As he was a sort of light tan color, I said he was a Buff color.  Someone else said Buffalo, my brother said Buffalo Bill, and my wife and I both said "Cody", and that's what he was for the next 15 1/2 yrs.

In my opinion it's hard to beat the name JAKE... but obviously there are other great names.
I like Hank & Earl also because I prefer people names.  Drake, Buck, or Nitro are cool if sporty names are your thing.

If for some whacky reason my wife ever trumps me and we get a female I like the name Suzy. :-D

I'de have to agree with monophil...Wait and see what the pup's personality is like, it's quirks and nuances.  We had a Chocolate Lab when I was a kid and we couldn't decide on a name.  The little bugger kept gnawing our shoes ragged so we named her "Shooie" because she was always running around with an old shoe in her mouth.

In the dog training book series by Richard A. Wolters he claims that training is easier for both trainer and dog if the name is one syllable.  Most Brittany Spaniels I've met should have been named "Nut."   ;)
I CAN clean fish.  My wife, on the other hand, prides herself in the art of filleting fish.  I mean to tell you, she can fillet ANYTHING, therefore I call myself "The Lucky Man."

A good hunting dog should be named "Boomer", maybe "Chester" (short for winchester)

My male dogs (beagles):
Hank
Hoss (just lost him)
Hercules

The one syllable names are best, as Hercules is always called Herc...

My brothers Brits, all girls, so they won't help:
Brandy
Molly
Annie

Or you can just call it 'dumbass' and be done with it, like:
Get out of the toilet, dumbass!
Don't eat that, dumbass!
Don't chase deer, dumbass!
(Just kidding, I love my dogs like kids, but the dog that doesn't have you saying one of the above once in a while, is rare, especially the beagles!)

I agree! My last dog was a Border Collie I named Boa, as in the snake.
He was very smart and sly...

Trevor
He has already used those names for other things  :o

I have a Toby and a Cooper for my bird dogs.

The wife and I also went rounds with Darby, Kolby (too close to Toby though), and Jake.
