NEW/STRANGE BAITS TO TRY OUT?!?!?!
« on: Jan 05, 2011, 11:40 AM »
An old timer told me that he likes to use non traditional bait and that it works great.  What have you heard about this?

He sprays his tip up minnows with a garlic spray (homemade from a spray bottle)

He uses baby marshmallows to jig for bream.

Perch eye & perch belly on jigs or the treble or rapalas

Baby shrimp for jigging and bigger shrimp for tip ups.

Anyone used these?  Any other good baits?

A dry line will never catch a fish.

I do the garlic on my plastics for walleye in the spring never tried it through the ice. Although I dont use a liquid I use the powder stuff and just put my plasics in a container with the stuff and it kinda marinates them. seems to work in the open water catch more fish on seasoned ones then unseasoned. Also add other thinks aside from garlic like salt and a little onion doesnt hurt either.

Perch eyes work really well for me on jigging spoons and i have seen perch belly used also and hear good things about it.

another thing i have heard but never tried is chicken skin theres a way you can cure it and cut it into strips and use it on a hook give a pretty good swimming action.  Search Shanty for it because thats were i saw it. guy posted directions how to cure it and even a video of him working it in a glass of water to see the action.

I tried the strips of chicken skin that someone talked about last year off of chicken legs, didn't catch anything, imo it was not worth the trouble I went through. Waxies don't cost that much.

Is there anything WD-40 doesn't work on? I'm waiting for someone to discover WD-40 will cure cancer.

Buddy did the WD-40 and he was the only one who didn't catch anything.  ;D

Some Corn Puffs worked for me over summertime - but not going to try that on the ice.

I've ripped some rubber tentacles from some rubber toys, worked over summertime - but that was when I was a kid.

Save up your ear wax, roll it into balls, and and place it on a small treble hook.
It doesnt last long once it hits the water, but pan fish can not resist it.

I have been taking my beef roast and trimming the fat off.  I them slice them real thin, and then cut them up into thin strips.  I've been hammering perch and crappies on it.  don't have any roast thawed right now, had to buy waxies tonight for the first time since before thanksgiving.

Belly button lint on a 1/32 oz jig is killer for Crappies too!!! :P

... but seriously, the garlic scent is a definite must! I use garlic scented Spike-it in hot pink to dye and scent my white Sabiki rig jigs and catch Crappie, Bass, Channel, Blue, and Flathead Catfish, Bluegills, Stripers, Drum, and even the odd Smallmouth Buffalo.

Doesn't matter if it is or not, it doesn't catch fish... so if you use it you don't have anything to worry about!

Warden: "What you using for bait boy?

You: Worms!

Warden:Caught any fish?

You: Nope!

Warden: Whats that can of WD40 for?

You: My fishin' reel.

Warden leaves, you don't get a ticket or catch any fish... it's a win/win situation for you and the fish!

I read on the Maine board last week about using juicy fruit gum in your bait traps as bait. Tried it and it works great. My first soak with juicy fruit I had 8 doz shiners in one trap.

A friend told me to take my artificial bait and put it in Tupperware with hot water and 2 cloves of mince garlic and leave it there for a few days--He says there is more of a permanent scent.  Then pull them out and catch some fish.

A dry line will never catch a fish.

I've stripped belly meat off crappies and caught crappies on it ice fishing, also had great results on small strips of squid for crappie and gills, sort of a ratso's with scent before they made them.
