Where is the gas leaking from. I had a 3000, and if Inwas in too much of a hurry to get to fishing I would forget to close the breather cap on the gas tank. Also after years of use I had to replace the O ring on it.

Make sure not to lay it down with the exhaust facing down. If you lay it down. Make sure it's on its handle with the gas cap as the highest point.

How full do you fill the tank? I would recommend only filling it three quarters full. Make sure I rings are not rotting. Make sure all caps are screwed on tight.

Had a gas leak on my 2000. It was a small white 90deg connector on the fuel line. Replaced and all is well now.

Cracked tank? I had a chainsaw that the plastic gas tank got a hairline crack in at some point, noticed a very slow leak in the case and had to search all over the saw before I finally found. I clear trees on my land in January/February so figured maybe I set it on a small stump or something a little hard in the extreme cold... maybe auger fell at some point?

I have a strikemaster and after only one season of todays cruddy gasoline, I had all fuel lines shrink and dry up, tank crack and both fuel line grommets dry out.  Replaced what I could, patched tank and only run trufuel now.  Problem hasn't happened again.  It only takes a little shrinkage from those grommets, where fuel lines pass through the tank wall, to leak.
It's like tailgating with the possibility of catching a fish!
