Title: Chicaugon Lake
Post by: Platinum on Jan 31, 2018, 08:07 AM
Large group of us staying there the weekend of 2/9-2/11.  We're staying on the East side of the lake about 2 miles North of Pentoga Park.  Anyone fish this lake that could provide some helpful info.  We're up for targeting any species really.  We'll have several snowmobiles so moving around the lake should be pretty easy.  If folks are driving vehicles out there then even better, but I am sure the snow is deep enough to make that troublesome.

Also, where is best place to buy bait?

Any and all info greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Crystal bait and tackle would be your best bet for nice bait. Its located right in crystal falls on the main drag cant miss it. If you want to target lakers i would stick to the hole on the north end of the lake. Shoot for 40 feet during the days, and move into the northern most weed beds around 3-6 feet during the evening (use minnows). You will find nice perch and gills in the northern most weed bed as well, fish really close to the river that flows out (chicoguan slough) 4feet. You will get lots of largemouth and small northerns on tip ups too. For white fish stick to the north eastern part of the lake about 10 feet. For walleye focus on the western edge toward the middle of the lake. Theres a large eagles nest you cant miss, you almost want to be directly south of that. Long channel there around 15-22 feet that hold nice walleyes (use shinners and jigging raps). For rock bass, well theyre all over 😂😭😭. These used to be our best producing spots for many years. In general the lake is large and fishing has been very very slow the last 5 years. The dnr is atempting to convert this lake into a musky lake and have been having trouble with the natural reproduction of the fish in the lake. They have been making cribs and sinking gravel in hope to create more habitat. This lake used to be great for walleye and perch and we fished it alot from 1993-2011. My family owns Hillberg cabins on the north end of the lake, and still does but in the past 5 years i fished it only once a winter and had slow days. Lots of good lakes in the area though if this one doesn't pan out for ya. I hope you guys have some good luck out there👍🏼 Let us know how you do and share some pics of them big lakers.

Wow, thank you for the awesome info Teggs!!  We'll be staying at the "Safari House" if you're familiar with that place.  Hopefully between all of us we can land at least a few nice fish!  I will definitely post our results afterwards.

Unfortunately no... other than small Perch.  We did mark plenty of fish on our Lowrances but just could not get them to go.  One of those humbling days.  By far a place I want to try again and again though.  Not enough time to explore all of it in a day and a half.

Yeah, that's a pretty big lake.  I'll bet the 'safari house' was pretty cool.  I've seen pics of it.
