Birdslayer I was tempted to keep it and try the butter bath but decided not to since I had a pile of perch to deal with. Know a lot of guys say they are darn good; can't understand why people still leave them on the ice to die instead of just releasing them.
[/quote]

I remember my dad catching burbot when i was a kid and he would throw them away because he didn't know any better! Good man but not very worldly.... small town guy mill worker his whole life and has no interest in education, even about fish! Thats until I fed him some poor man's lobster!!! I cooked him his first ling about ten years ago and he thought it was some kind of salt water fish i had caught. When I told him what it was he didn't believe me and I literally had to show him the pictures and carcass! After that his first response was "you know how many of those i caught and left on the ice over the years!?" I said I know... now don't you wish would have kept them!?? Or at the very least let them go so someone else could enjoy them. He agreed and now every time I fish on Oneida he asks if I caught any ling cod!!!! He can't get enough! Lesson here is one man's garbage is another man's treasure... if your not going to eat it RELEASE IT!! Thanks for putting that one back so I can catch him next year!!!

If the lake keeps getting warmer burbot will become extinct

Agreed Filet, sad to think that my little one might not be able to share in some of the great experiences that I have had... burbot included!!! Or maybe icefishing in general!!???

Way to go Bruce  :), haven't seen many of those on this thread or on the ice this year. Great picture of the lake, odd when there's not a soul to be seen. Would love to get out today but  decided not to tempt fate. Keep on thinking about what Shane and some others said a while ago about candled ice and the quality of the Oneida ice this year and how fast it will go.

Birdslayer nice tale about your Dad, maybe I'll keep the next one I catch to try but it's looking like that will have to wait till next year. I remember when I first started ice fishing out of Apps and Godfreys, you would see piles of them on the ice on some days.

Thanks KP. I think the beatings will continue soon. ;)

Good stuff Birdslayer. I have always released burbot but it makes me sick to think about how many were left on the ice when I was a kid.

How about the CUSE???

In the 50s and 60s there was a guy with a sled, not a snowmobile, who would criss cross the ice at Sylvan Beach and pick them up.  I guess He knew something everyone else didn't ??  They are good but not a walleye. The walleye limit then was 25.

Burbot are good eats, people pay 10 bucks A pound for cod at Wegmans, but they leave these on the ice, pretty senseless. Cook them up I say.

Yeah. I went to that game instead of making a last run at the eyes. Started with drinking beers outside in 65deg weather and ended with 30k people going crazy and running on the court. It couldn't have been much better.

But I see by the pics that I couldn't go wrong either way. Great fish Bruce!

Ice and winters are cyclical. We will have deep freeze winters again. Look at 2014 and 2015 with record lows and ice fishing into April. California has been in a draught cycle and now they have more rain than they can handle. All part of the earths natural cycles.

What a difference 2 years makes.

2 years ago today the high was 19 degrees and the low set a record at -18. Ice was 2' thick and there was no end in sight.

I went by at lunch and saw you out there, Freddie. And a half a mile away a guy in a boat.

This rain is nasty. My yard has rivers running thru it, basement is already flooded. Urgh. Shore ice won't last long with this.

Ha Ha,  That's funny.  It was tough to stay ahead of the bite chasers this year with such limited area to fish.  Heard I just missed you last Saturday.  Pooch said he ran into you out there.  See ya on the open water.

The only bite I was chasing yesterday was out of a steak sandwich.
