Title: Ice updates
Post by: #1fisherman on Dec 06, 2010, 02:07 PM
I suggested this last year and it seemed to go over well, if we all post ice thicknesses we may prevent the unecassary death of a fellow ice angler or their family. Can we please continue to post regularily any trouble spots we find out there and share that info with all. I'll begin by saying I was at Fairfax lake yesterday and someone actually drove on the ice. They went right at the boat launch and down the lake (all I saw was their tire tracks) it's a good thing they turned right because I went left and my first hole was a solid 13 inches, my second hole not ten feet further was only six inches, with flood water on top. Please people walk out and test first, no ice freezes consistently, we all saw it last year with Global warming our winters are not what they used to be and ice safety is becoming a huge issue. Remember your insurance will not cover your vehicle going through the ice, and if you go with it, who will recover you? Lets ALL be safe and have the best year of ice fishing ever!

I saw two cars on Sylvan Lake yesterday parked together in front of the waterslides.  I haven't been on yet to check the ice.

Pigeon Lake today had 12''-13'' of ice over 18 FOW.  There was couple of vehicles out on the ice by the provincial park boat launch, but I walked out to the drop off.

Stayed close yesterday. (We only had a four hour window to get out)

In Calgary, Lake Mackenzie seemed to be about 12" or so. Lady at the booth said they would be safe enough to drive there Zam on it by next weekend, for sure.

Pigeon last week was 8 inches.  This week it is averaging 11-12 inches.  At least where I was.  This cold weather is doing the trick.   Should be drivable by next weekend at the earliest.  Still, it is early so it the ice will likely be variable.  I think it is safe as long as one has pre-drilled and knows the area.

Personally,

My father raised me to never drive on the ice until she is 18 inches, and even then I go slow and stick close to the "roads"
Once she is close to 2 feet, Party Hardy but still I drive slow.. can cause a wake if you are tearing down the iceroads.

CALGARY and AREA: Ghost Lake (Cochrane): Yesterday visited to check the ice conditions. A couple of people ice fishing. Ice around 8-10 inches but some places I could see thin as much as 3 inches. May be wait a week if the temperature stays well below zero.
Chestermere: Recent closure from western headworks left the lake with very little water. May not be fishable this winter.
Glenmore Reservoir: Didnt see any one fishing. Thickness???

16" of ice on Buffalo, a half dozen huts out on Scenic Sands, and people driving to their huts. I watched 4 full size SUV's and pickups drive right across the bay, I wouldn't advise it, but they seemed to make it across just fine.

McGregor atleast 12"..Couple of pickups driving over the ice near the boat launch (not recommended); about 1-1/2 inch of snow cover so be carefull. Couldn't catch anything but my fishfinder was giving me lots of alarms... ;)

I went out to Wilson's Beach on my way into work last night.  There were about 5-6 shacks out there with vehicle tracks to each of them.  I went out on a road of sorts about 1-200 yards from the shoreline.  I didn't have time to punch any holes, but will on Friday when I put my shack out there.  I didn't notice any tracks headed across the lake yet.  I will try to update with some thicknesses after I get mine out there.

Hey Shack

Hope you and your family had a great Holiday Season and have a even better New Year.

Congrats on the Power Auger. Good to hear that both Santa and your Wife think you should go out more often.

A customer told me last week of Burntstick , he said he has not caught any perch there as of yet. Is it hard to catch them there?

Be Safe Bro.

Went to Wabamun today and fished in town. Ice was 11-14 inches of solid ice. 4 or 5 trucks drove on. Including a 1 ton and a 3/4 ton. The thinner ice seemed to be more on the west side of the peir. And the fishing was a bit slow as well. Only managed one. Missed one and only had a couple coming to take peeks.

I usually head out about 125 yards past the peir. Either straight out or a bit over to the east (left side) there's a good sized weed bed in there. The right side is sand with some patches of weeds.

BurntStick Lake
Ice on NE side near where the stoney Creek runs was 12.5" .. after wasting the morning decided to move..
Ice on South side  where the trailer court leads to a small lot where I parked my 2 WD truck ( wasn't gonna risk that one)  = 14" and it is very clear black(strong) ice.
the only real vehicle was a jeep CJ and a rhino... didn't see much else.
Caught one small Perch ut him back to fill out a little more. But they sure were fun to watch on FishTV.

I had prolly 6-10 around my hook a couple times... Was using a willow leaf as a flasher and had a maggot  tipped yellow glowhook 4" below that.
switched hooks and bait up many times including using only a glow with mealworms and maggots and no go... they don't like my jigging technique I guess. ???

Newbie here. Was out a CVR on Monday. Good strong 18 inches of ice where I was (SE end near the islands). Lots and lots of trucks driving right across the middle. A fellow angler out there told me that the ice thins to 12 inches as you get further from shore.

I think this is a great idea.  my insurance DOES cover me if I go through the ice, however.  I have the policy in my home, and the rider is very clear.

Anyone want to know a company that will cover you, just call a broker...they can tell you/find out for you.

I wish I could stay with my old company for the summer and just use these guys for the winter...but too much of a hassle, so I stick with the ones that cover me if I go in the drink...not that that wouldn't be my last worry at that point.

Cheers!

Was out at hasse today with the wife and kids looking for some pearch. Only had a few nibbles they didn't seem to interested. I was suprised there was only 11" of ice where i drilled. there was a few other trucks out on the ice including mine, but after i saw the 11" i parked back on shore. It is probably stong enough, but i still think it's sketchy under 15". There was about a foot of snow on the ice and some flood water, just a heads up if anyone was thinking of heading there.

Hey all,  New to forum.  Looked around and found some interesting info.  Am an avid ice nut and thought it would be cool to join.  Spend most of ice time on Northern Lakes chasing Walleye and Perch.
Was out at Slave (driftpile) on boxing day.  First on ice for third year in a row.  Road in was OK up to field, then it got nasty with drifting snow.  Clawed our way to lake with quads and ski-doos.  Once on the ice i thought it would be easy trekking.  Only slightly better than field.  Got out to GPS location and punched a few holes, around 14 inches of good solid ice.  Came across 1 gas pocket hole so anybody heading out beware.  Was about 5 feet in diameter with bubbles very apparent.
Set up for walleye and had new toy, Marcum Showdown Sonar in the water.  Picked up fish right away and hooked into first Eye within 10 minutes.  With 6 of us out we had 5 walleye on the ice within an hour, all around 19 to 20 inches.  Nice fish.  Around 1PM weather took a turn for the worse, wind came up and temps dropped.  Fished till about 4:30.  Group came out with 8 Walley, 5 burbot.  Also picked up about a dozen Pike (all small) and 1 tulibee.  All in all a good adventure and first day.
Not sure when heading back.

Note:
A buddy went up to Snipe the same day and did alright on Whites, no perch.  Ice about 12 inches with floodwaterdown 2 inches.

Later

BroadStBullie and I were out at Chain Lakes today. We were working on trying to lower the sucker population. However we did manage to get some nice panfry sized trout.
Ice was 17" thick.. Nice and clear.. a small amount of snow on the lake but nothing a small shovel can't take care of.

Went to fawcett lake on Jan 1,ice thickness is only about 10 inches,on the east side boat launch there is no truck tracks or anything, same as the west side,so I ventured out with my truck, and immediately ran into some flood ice   About 6 inches deep, nothing to worry about except the big blow up right by the shore line by the boat launch,so I only ventured out about 100 yards with the truck and manually pulled the shanty on,I guess no one is brave enough to go across the lake yet,it might be good to go but you would be chancing it,as the ice is not the good clear black ice, seemed pretty soft when punching through with the auger,as soon as someone is brave enough to take a drive across Iam pretty sure everyone up there will jump on the band wagon, with the 2.5 ft of snow up there definatly need 4x4,fishing was not the best, put in a good solid day of fishing and caught about 20 pike ranging from9 to 1 pounders,(aka hammer handles) no perch or walleye, but the chances might of been better if I could cover more ground with vehicle on the ice, lots of action with the pike at least,a couple more weeks and I imagine all the northern lakes will pick up with fishing, just need a little more of cold weather, way too much snow up north insulating the ice and then should be able to travel anywhere!

Ghost is a hard lake to fish had good luck close to shore using maggots on a Mud Bug for whitesfish, and minnow/smelt heads dangling under a Williams Wobbler. all in less than 30 FOW. Try close to the cliffs just past the campground. Been there 4 times this year, only been skunked the first trip.  :icefish:

Mons Lake had 10 - 12 inshes of ice and could drive on easily with a 4x4
Hanmore didn't have any signs of ice fishing or driving on the lake (though it had snowed)
North Buck had a 10 - 12 inches with 3 inches flood water lots of snow coverage as well.
Long Island Lake had 10 inches of ice with 1-2 inches of flood water and to much snow to bother trying to drive on.

We used to have good luck for WF off the west tip of the island towards the east end using wire worms and russian hooks with maggot or two. Hang the hook horizontally and fish near bottom to 2 feet up. It drops off fast there so you fish quite close to shore. Keep a fresh maggot on at all times, not longer than 15 20 minutes.

I suppose now that the ice is generally thick enough in most areas we should switch this topic to "How Freakin Deep Is The Snow On Your Lake". I envy all of you with machines that will allow you to get out there in the deep snow cover. I guess I'll be walking on or waiting for some warm weather to melt it some.

Chain lakes for trout is usually a good bet to catch something... it's not too terribly far and they usually hit on shrimp tipped glowing things, although I heard last time i was there that power bait was the way to go.
Last time i was there, pink shrimp on a yellow head glow jig got me 4 nice panfries

Finally got out to Carolside/Berry creek dam. 5 keepers at 28 inches long, nice fat bellys and one throw back cause it was 22 inches. 3 of us thank god because there was about a foot of snow on the ice. had to park up top near the dam and walk down. Bring your snow machines or at least a pull sled. The snow has made the top ice really soft and wet. I sunk in about 5-6 inches into slushy water at several points. otherwise, a good day. over 2 feet of good thick ice.

I tried South Buck yesterday morning, this is from the park in town looking up the lake:

About 14" of loose drifted snow, no trail that I could see other than the half buried one in the pic, and no huts as far as I could tell. I didn't check the ice thickness, and only rode out to about the middle of the lake before turning back, but didn't find any slush. Pretty much snowmobile or tracked ATV only at this point, unless you've got a 4x4 with big tires and a sense of adventure.

So I am back in 10 days (to Alberta/Edmonton) and am asking around about ICE depth and driving on to lakes with the truck.

My buds have all been busy training and have not been out....but they are saying we have lost alot of ice, due to alot of flood water and snow insulating the ice.

I know 10 days is a long time...but have we been loosing enough ICE to really start back at checking the lakes as you drive on (IF YOU EVEN CAN DRIVE ON)....like I would early season again??

Any observations/tips are appreciated....just want to be safe, and "UNSTUCK"...lol

Cheers!

hey Ryan. i highly suggest NOT driving on. on a few local lakes, even after we had this BS -30*C for a few days im finding open areas under the ice/floodwater. ice is generally a solid 24+ inches, but i wouldnt risk it. i havent driven on a lake in Alberta or BC yet this year.

Feb-1-11, out on Coal today for a few hours. Drove on with no issues other than the ruts, 4x4 access for sure. No issue with flood ice or slush but a fair amount of snow, I didn't go far off the main drag and only went down a mile or so. Was having trouble with my auger last time out so I tuned it up and wanted to give it a try, runs like new now! A few hammer handles, nothing exciting but was good to get out.

Title: Gull Lake conditions
Post by: Haukki Hunter on Feb 13, 2011, 09:04 PM
I was out last Thursday (Feb. 3rd) and was able to drive from Wilson's Beach right out to my shack on a pretty well established road.  What a difference a week makes!  I tried to go out on Friday (Feb. 11th) and didn't make it 80 yards onto the lake before I was stuck.  I had followed someone else's track, but realized too late that they had stopped about 100 yards past where I was too.  The warm weather gave me no traction on the snow, and even though I wasn't "hung up" I could not budge my 4Runner.  There was nobody around, and eventually my brother in law came out and one with one little tug I was out.

I went out there today on my way into work, to check conditions, and winched out another guy right at Wilson's landing.  Some snowmobilers/fishers said that they had come across quite a bit of flood waters out on the open ice too.  Not looking good for truck access to the lake unless it gets a fair bit colder for a while, or somebody plows a road out there.

Buffalo Lake @ Scenic Sands

22-24" of good ice, and anywhere from 8-12" of crusted over snow. Travel by truck off the beaten path would be pretty difficult, quads should be able to stay on top, sleds will have no problem. No slush that I could see anywhere.
Title: All chained up with nowhere to go!
Post by: Haukki Hunter on Mar 09, 2011, 01:37 AM
I hadn't been out to my shack for a few weeks, although not for lack of trying, due to the warm weather and poor conditions on the lake.  FINALLY it got cold again, and I also picked up a set of V-bar tire chains for my truck.  I took my boy out on Friday for a third attempt at making it to our shack (about 4km's north of Wilson's Beach).  The chains were phenomenal...BUT the snow was just too deep in places to make the pass.

I kept the truck in 4 low and we were plowing and climbing up on top of the crust in places but averaging only about 10km/hr at best.  The nice thing about the chains was...even when we got stuck going forward, we were able to get unstuck every time but once.  20mins of digging to get us un-high centered and we were on our way again.  We ended up making it about 800 yards from the shacks before calling it a day.  As I expected there was one fella on his way out following our tracks.  We met him and chatted and he ended up turning back.  We drove south of the landing to see if we could help what looked to be another guy stuck out there.  He had been stuck 3 times, and eventually just unloaded a snowmobile and left his truck there, and went fishing, we presumed.  While out there another guy drove out to where we were, and against our advice, decided to try it anyway.  He was driving a stock Chevy, unchained, and made it about 80 yards past the truck we thought was stuck.

Call me a callous SOB if you will, but we had already unchained at the landing and when we left he was still shovelling.  He said he had got stuck the previous week too, so I figured maybe he was just trying to learn his lesson again.

Moral of the story is...drive a bigger or lifted truck, with chains and you will likely make it out there, or have fun trying like we did.  Or, snowmobile out.  Or, we all go in and offer the fellow who owns the Bombardier track unit with the big plow on the front of it to make us a road out there.  13 shacks @ $30 apiece= convincing arguement.  PM me if you would be on board with the idea, and I'll approach the guy myself.

If you havent seen the other posts, many lakes are iced over now.  Chickakoo Lake is the only one i can report on at this time, and it is measuring 2-4 inches of solid, crystal clear ice.  If it doesnt snow, take your skates. BEST way to cover the lake in a short period of time!

Roads down are snow covered but not too slippery. Drilled 2 holes about 10 feet out and 2 more 20 feet out. Not even a nibble, just happy to drill some hard water. Good luck and fish safe.

Where we were it was around 9 inches and VERY patchy on the quality of ice... Some spots were clear ice with some air bubbles, other spots looked like ice we get in spring and FULL of bubbles. I won't be driving on until there is atleast 18 inches of ice this year (last year I was driving on 14 inches in my truck) Even just walking the ice cracks a bit. Guy had a quad out there and could hear the ice cracking the whole way!

Was that by the town? I was out by fallis and all the ice was 8-10 inches of pure clear black ice. Some of the spots felt like you were walking on water as there was liitle or no snow. It was awesome seeing the fish fighting below the ice.

About 20" on Whitefish Lake on the 21st.  A huge North-South pressure ridge out there almost down the middle of the lake.  I just plain stayed away from it.  Fishing extremely slow.  Managed 1 whitefish for 9 guys on Sat.

So if anyone is fishing at Ghost lake these days... what are the thoughts on that pressure ridge/split to the right of the boat launch. Been a couple weeks since I been there but there was some water showing out of it ( even tho the ice was 18" or so ).

still.. what are the experienced folks sayin about it?

i will also be there with my adult children, my sister and my cousin  and his 2 children ( 8/10) on sunday. look for the blue clam basecamp. we'll go on at the southern part of the lake going on near hwy 144a.
Ice in that part of the word lately has been about 12". I doubt i will be driving on. many of these people will be experiencing ice fishing for the first time.

I would sure appreciate if anyone who has any more info about the lake conditions to post them.
Thanks all

Drove on Pigeon Lake Saturday and Sunday went to a depth of ten feet of water and the ice thickness was 14 inches. While fishing another pickup came over to chat and  and parked 10 feet from my truck and stayed for 20 min. Fishing was slow only saw a few whites and both turned away from chartreuse  w/w and never came back. They looked like they'd go to 6 to 7 lbs.

Cold Lake - average of 20 inches

At Gull yesterday, it is surprising how quickly the ice changes in warm weather.   I don't think there is any danger yet but anywere around cracks will change quickly.  The auger was causing more slush than the fine chips.  Looks like the next week is above 0 daytime in most places.  Be careful out there!

On my flight back into Edmonton yesterday afternoon, I noticed a lot of the medium sized lakes around the area were frozen or partially frozen over. With the sub -20 temps we've got right now, I'll bet that one calm night will be enough to freeze most of the larger lakes over as well.

I may have to go do some exploring later this week....

Good to see you back on here!

Thanks!

Gull is completely frozen over, and the couple spots I checked on the north end had a good 4" of clear, solid ice. I didn't venture much more than 50' from shore, as I didn't have my floater suit or picks on, and I was over 4' of water. A little tough to pull yourself back up on the ice un-aided from even that depth if you go through.

Make sure you check the reg's before heading out fishing, a lot of the more popular lakes are still closed until early December for the whitefish spawn.

I went out to mound red reservoir it had about 8 inches of solid ice with about 4 inches of soft ice ontop of it. We were the first ones on the ice and had a little treck to go down the hill cutting through the deep snow, this definitely was a work out since I had to make multiple trips since I didn't bring the sled. I only got one bite but was out fishing at the wrong time of day. I am looking forward to hit gull lake next weekend

.  First of all welcome flytyer nymph. There is a bunch of us going to gull on the 28th of Dec, check out Alberta iceshanty get together date set.      Harrydude if we get some colder weather it should be good to drive on we were by aspen beach, and there was an open hole about three foot squared with about 12-14" of water in it, then ice underneath. When we were walking there was quite sniff of water under the snow. Which made it very slushie, the ice was 12" + but sketchy, looking. I sure hope we can drive on for the shanty get together on the 28 th.  :-\

North end of Gull has about 14" of good looking ice where I drilled. There's quite a bit of really crusted snow near shore, but by the time you get 75 yards out from the launch, there's only 2" with some small drifts. Any slush that was in the area has since frozen solid.

There was no path for vehicles packed down on the launch yet, and I doubt it'll happen anytime soon with all the banks and drifts right near shore.

Title: Re: Ice updates
Post by: swampy45 on Dec 27, 2013, 09:08 AM
I was out at Wabamun yesterday, and although not fishing I did check out the ice again...  One of my buddy's was on the lake fishing where there was a ton of floodwater (8"+), and we found several holes in the ice big enough to fit our fist through, and the ice was less than 6" thick almost everywhere we found these holes.  There is up to 12" of ice in some spots, but most if it is just frozen slush.

Lots of snow when you venture too far south from the boat launch. My truck took a beating today.

Title: Re: Ice updates
Post by: lromanchuk on Jan 07, 2014, 10:07 AM
I fish along the east side of the lake probably 1-2km south of the boat launch. Most of the lake is 6-10 feet of water, but there's a little drop right off the shore that gets 12-13 ft of water. Ive always had descent luck there.

Lots of snow when you venture that far south though. You need a good truck or skidoo.

Further to Pine Coulee:  The ice is great; the fishing is not.

10 days ago I fished in the evening a ways north of the bridge at PCR and for the second time this season caught neither burbot, my chief prey, nor walleye.  In fact my partner and I did not even get a bite.  I've never been skunked at PCR before, let alone twice in two weeks.  I realize that others have reported poor PCR success too this year but had hoped that things would've improved by now.  Anybody know what's up?

On the last day of last season I fished the same spot and took home a few burbot.  Upon cleaning the fish I discovered that their flesh was very soft and one even had dark flesh with black running throughout.  Are diseases or environmental factors at play.  Also, in late summer the authorities began drawing the water down to service parts of the facility.  Do you suppose that this wrecked havoc with the fishing in some way?

Pine Coulee has been a favorite spot for us over the past several years.  Some have speculated that it's been over fished but frankly in my opinion it's  a big lake and some of the areas I fish never appear to be frequented by other fishermen.  I trust that my experiences this year are just a glitch and, perhaps, due to poor technique on my part.  Perhaps things will right be right again soon.  What do you think?

Jackfish near Carvel still had about 2 ft off the launch.

Solid 2.5 feet on Wab still, but its getting softer.  This cold snap will help solidify it back up.  Pretty rough around the shoreline but even my Corolla made it through.  Few 3/4 tons out on the ice.

Is anyone else out there today?

Stopped at jackfish and on route to another lake.

I'm guessing at 2ft approx (not far off) but it looks like hard packed snow for most of it, where I was.  But that 2' maybe consisted of 6-8" of really nice ice.

I'm not an expert on ice by any means....but i would have thought it would have been in better shape this weekend.

Anyway, be careful all. Hope lake 2 has nice ice....I don't really want to walk 45 mins to my spot. Oh, okay...ya I do...lol. Such a sucker. Lol.

There is the odd bunch flowing out of the rain gutters as hail... but I doubt it will form into much and still would not consider it to be safe even for light gear.

Was out yesterday on my B day and found a crack that had formed as we fished.

It was amazing how much I could make it move just by flexing it  and jumping up and down.

With the weight of this snow, I can only imagine what is happening to the ice.

I'm not an expert on the subject. I just hope everyone is safe out there if they venture out on the ice after all this snow.

Me and a buddy hit the usual pike spots in the Nanton area today. Beautiful weather and a few nice fish.
Quite a bit of floodwater out on the ice and around 8 inches of slush on the shore. Wear your waterproof boots if you head out!
Out on the lakes there was a good 7-10 inches in spots, but the water on top got bad towards the end of the day widening some pressure ridges and holes. I would not recommend driving and use caution if you decide to go out in the next while.

7 inches of black ice at Mcgregor Lake near the bay at middle portion of the lake. There was open water near the shore in one or two spots though and big patches of bad ice. Caught a walleye and one pike though!
Fished 3 times in last 10 days at McGregor. 13" of black ice at Milo end. Few anglers fishing and none driving. Caught 2 pikes altogether and a couple of bites. Some drift at this end. Also tried my luck at the middle from boat launch all the way to other end with 9 holes, no luck. Sonar couldn't find anything moving either.

15" of SOFT ice at Lac la Nonne.  People are driving on, but I would think twice (and I was in a 1995 Toyota Corolla).  Most people were on quads and side by sides.  The ice was making some very eerie and unfamiliar noises today.  Not what i am used to hearing.

I have been out to Doberg many times over the years and that lake has my number.  I get skunked every time..... I can be 4 ft from a buddy sharing a tent, using the same lure and bait.  I get to watch him catch his limit and I go home skunked again and again. The worst thing about getting skunked and watching someone else slay is that i keep going back for more punishment, thinking my luck is bound to change.

Drilled through 18 inches of ice about 20 yards from shore at Crawling Valley. Only 10 inches of ice at Blood Indian Creek Res. Good enough to drive on. Great ice, solid all the way through. Blood indian has thick hard packed snow cover. Just a bit more insulated. Happy to get out for the first time in a year!!!

Title: Re: Ice updates
Post by: SNAPFisher on Mar 09, 2015, 10:52 PM
Gull at Wilsons was solid, very.  When the snow melts, maybe not so much.   The huge heave at shore could become tough over the next week.

At Pigeon tonight at Grandview...love that hour change...
All the snow has melted and it looks like it normally does at the beginning of April.  The holes fill in with water after drilling.  I won't be too long with this weather that I would not recommend vehicle travel in that area.  Still lots of ice but this week will take its toll on strength.

Maybe i was pushing my luck a bit the last two days, but I drove on at Wab on two different areas.  Ice is starting to really deteriorate and I wont be driving on again.  I would not recommend driving on anymore, but to each their own! Ice was about 18" of still solid but slightly granular ice, and then the top 6" was frozen slush and slush.  Be safe if you venture out.

A couple very small and shallow "puddles" froze over in my drive a couple of the past few days.

First of all Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to all. Went out on Cold Lake yesterday on French bay. In the small portion of the bay off the boat launch 9 inches of good black ice. As you move out onto the main part of the bay there is a transition that runs east to west and some sketchy looking ice I went over and drilled a hole 2 inches! a fair amount of current under the ice. It may only be in a few spots but recommend giving her a little more time, some good negative temps coming up. I am going to go out again in a couple days and will post an update. Take care all and talk later.

North end of Gull.  Found ice as thick as 14.5 inches and then 8 inches in the same area.  Very inconsistent ice this year at Gull.  I've never seen it quite this different before.  I walked and sweated...lots,  however, many many vehicles out on the ice.  Luckily none even close to where I was fishing.

Pigeon is averaging 12-14 inches...way more consistent on popular areas.

No idea on the names of the lakes i was fishing today out between Edson and Hinton, but the ice was ridiculously inconsistent.  There is flowing water and open water between some of the lakes and i found 2" to 14".  Closer to the creeks was the thinner ice obviously, but the lake(s) were anywhere from 8-14".  I walked.  A lot.

Wabamun has 16-18" of ice, and the bottom is starting to rot off.  Almost no snow left on the lake. Be safe out there folks!

Prairie lakes ice in the Lethbridge area is done at this point. Only those with a death wish would be venturing out now. Lots of open water along the edges with some lakes close to coming off (only a few inches of crappy ice remain).

Eagle lake had 20" of ice and produced some heavy weight midget pike. Caught 4 around the 26" length and all of the had big fat bellys on them..

Upper Kananaskis lake had 18-20 inches of good ice. However be careful accessing the lake right by the parking lot. That area is usually open but was frozen except for a 5 ft. area where there was ripples coming of the water. Kind of hidden away if you don't know it is there. We saw a couple guys come down there ... kinda scary!!

Saw a guy with a side by side on Devils, he has a death wish. No fish today. Plan on making a trip towards Athabasca on Friday, will report back.

I didn't drive down to the lake, was just passing by on highway 38. Wanted to swing in but was already late for getting to work on time. Side by side was on the west side of the lake. Ice looked sketchy towards the east of the lake, there was only frost on ice on the west side.

There's 3" of solid ice at the north end of Lake Newell about 20' out but still open water in the middle of the bay. I might go drop a line in tomorrow, wearing a life jacket and staying in 4-5' of water tops.

24" of ice on Pigeon yesterday, and anywhere from 1-6" of floodwater.  Little unnerving driving around even with all the safe ice underneath.  The ice was starting to show signs of fingers and candling with the sediment settling through the ice about 8" from the top.  Scary to see mid January... Boats in before March 31st?  Ha.  Fishing also sucked yesterday.

Newell and Mcgregor. No fish at either but the ice was still good. Drove on at Newell not at Mcgregor. All permie shacks at Newell were off the ice and on the shore.  With the cold weather here ice should be good till season end in 2 weeks. If we get any sort of good warm spell with a west wind the ice won't be good till the end of season.

Ummmm.   Those lakes are closed until 10-Dec every year.  So this year they open on a Monday.  Which is 11-Dec.

From other updates I've heard that Sylvan is at least 8 inches on average so far.  Gull is 10 inches and deeper.  This from the AO site.  I've got a bet on Sylvan making 11 inches by opening day :).  Hoping to win some bragging rights.

Edmonton area is great ice.  I've heard 14-16 inches on most lakes.

Cold just froze over...mostly.  The guess is some will be walking out in a few days.  Maybe a quad or two towards the end of the week.  Certainly in the bays.

It looks like someone else found 17 inches on French Bay - see same AO post.  I think it is safe to say that both are probably correct so there is a lot of variation in Cold Lake ice depth which should come as no surprise to anyone.

Anyone been to Sylvan recently? Looking for info at Sunbreaker Cove and hoping there's enough ice for an empty one ton hauling a shack on a utility trailer. Want to get it on the ice this weekend!!!

Lots of people out on Cold Lake today. Few tents out from the marina a good half mile and a couple vehicles out that far. Looks like quite a few out from government launch quite a ways as well.

Looks like the slaughter is on full bore. Should be a pretty high mortality rate in this cold weather 😐😐

Put my shack out on Pigeon on Saturday, probably around 24" of ice at the point just south of the Mulhurst boat launch. Went back today and there was a new, huge ice heave running east/west, maybe 1/2 km south of the boat launch, starting a couple hundred yards from shore and heading to the middle of the lake.

We caught a couple walleye and saw a few others on the camera, as well as a few pike.

That heave crosses the entire lake to Grandview.  Showed up before last weekend.  Also a big one out in front of Grandview as well now.  Different heave.  Blocks you from getting anywhere.  This year it is really bad and I think it is lack of snow and huge temp swings.

Hmmm, I wonder how I could have missed it when I hauled my shack out. I was probably staring at the cabins on shore trying to figure out which one belonged to an old buddy of mine. Good thing I was close to shore and didn't drive into it!!!

Pigeon North side had 4.5 inches of good ice and 1.5 inches of white ice.  Some small heaves that do not bad, look again.  I've seen a couple that separated by 2 feet and the ice in between was paper thin.  So not really ready for travel though there where idiots with a truck parked near shore and then quaded out.  They were nowhere near me - down the way about .5 km.  If you don't see those splits in the ice, drive quad over, bye bye.    Not exactly a good ice year so far.  I'll probably skidoo it in about 2 weeks.  Looks it should be good for that kind of travel by then.

Gull Lake at Sandy Point.  9 inches of ice near shore.  Maybe 6 tops out further.  Tons of flood water now that it has been swiss cheesed a bit.   Poorest ice quality I can ever remember for this time of year.  The ice chips out when cut.

Now with the bad news out of the way.  The temps are going to take a dive starting this weekend.  At least for a few days.

Nice!  Sure a late year.   Good luck when you get out.

Thx snap.

I actually don't ice fish for lakers, they don't seem to be a particularly strong fish when it comes to releases. I do fish them extensively in the summer with lighter gear and I enjoy them purely as a game fish not a eating fish. But I find they have to be treated very gingerly in order to get a good live release on them and I just don't know if this is happening in the winter through the ice. I go for drives out on the ice now and again after a weekend and by the looks of the blood bath that's on the ice I'm inclined to think it's a slaughter out there at times. I've been chasing them for about 15 years now and have lived out here for 6 and have been on them steady for that period and I've sure noticed a decline in the quality of fish over that period. Still lots there but the quality is gone down hill big time.

But that's just me, many enjoy it, I can tell by all the blood on the ice.

Spent the day on Gull today. People driving on the lake with trucks. Brownlows Landing was well over 14”  a couple hundred yards from shore. Moved to east side off Wilson’s Beach campground and ice was substantially thinner. 8-10” 100 yards form shore. We walked out another 50 yards and there was water on the surface under the snow and only 6-8”.  People were driving on but only closer to shore.  West side by RV Heaven was 8-10 as well. Saw a couple uninterested whites, caught a small perch, and hooked on a couple of jack but that was it for New Year’s Day.

Michelle has 10ft open water around it.
Spruce Coulee has gate closed,I assume road is in rough shape going down.
Reesor is flushable with foot access pretty much anywhere, ice 14 inches out in open and very soft....
I would assume Bullshead will be unfishable thru ice for opening day,and wont have much open water.

Any new ice updates what lakes might be safe to walk on....pigeon at the boat launch is 3 to 5 inches about 150 200 ft out

Just the little or shallower ones.  Trout lakes are all good to go with 5-6 inches.  No snow left so a windy weekend like this weekend makes it tough, tough, tough.  Good change in weather starting Tuesday.  Most lakes should be good to go in 2 weeks  ;)

Pigeon Lake - 10' - 12" good ice. A few people were driving on at the provincial park. Most were walk ons. Fished only a couple hours at drop off and no sign of life down our holes. Saw one walleye caught next to us and that was all.

Gull Lake - 12"  good ice. Lots of people driving on. Lots of walk on at Brownlows. Wilson Beach was same, but got a bit thinner farther out from shore. No fish, non seen.

Slow times!  I managed to at least find the walleye but that was about it.  9-10 inches out further on Pigeon.   Not a lot of ice for this time of year.  I'm skidooing it.

I saw all species of fish at Gull except perch.  Ice was 11-13 inches.  13 inches closer to shore and 11 out further.

Reports from a few of the farmers around here in East Central Alberta are around 3-4 inch in the dugouts and sloughs they are opening for the cows. These are mostly all small bodies of water and close to shore. We have very little snow and have had a couple of weeks already of some double digit lows. All depends on the weather but if it continues as it has should have walk on ice first week in December. . I am not one to push it, but the lakes around here are small with most being less than a mile by a mile so things firm up pretty quick.

Brownlow's has 22" of ice. We saw 1 burbot, 1 walleye, a couple perch, 1 whitefish and half a dozen pike on the camera. Water is really murky this year with only 5-6 feet of good visibility.

Had one bite all day. Oh well, at least it wasn't -30

Well that sucks on the visibility factor.   It has been good for a few years now.

Pigeon has 16-17 inches a week ago so should be a bit more by now.   Zero fish caught....sigh.
