So even the shaded shorelines are going bad up there? Dang, I was hoping to get out on the ice one more time this season.

Still going to go up to Lax tomorrow and look at some south shorelines the sun has hopefully missed.  ;D

Here's the story about the truck going through the ice. Not much to read about other than it happening. Nothing like dropping a $30K truck though.

From the pictures I'm pretty sure I know the area the guy went through....After 40 years of ice fishing on Onalaska, the only thing I can say is...
WHAT WAS HE THINKING.....

The problem is with the water dropping earlier in the year and now going back up, the shorelines are all cracked out. So water builds up there and deteriorates the ice even worse.
Last weekend I walked through 5" of water to get off the ice Sunday afternoon.
Be careful out there. I'm a diehard but don't feel it's worth risking this weekend.

I'm sure the lake will be fine yet through this weekend as long as you're traveling by foot.  My concerns were more with the blackriver and other backwaters where there is current.  I saw the ice go to crap literally over night out there, holes were opened up to the size of manhole covers but the shoreline was fine.  I'm sure there will still be spots to get out over the next week or so.  I saw that pic of the truck, did it go in SE of the lights where it seems like there's a crack that someone puts a truck in almost every winter?

Still plenty of good ice in the off-current backwaters I fished this weekend.

The shoreline ice was still in good shape Saturday morning, but by Sunday water was starting to pool up.

Some old holes were starting to widen, too, and will be something to watch when heading out.

Fishing for bluegills was good early, but they shut down as the sun rose.

Yea, shoreline looks pretty good on the lake yet.  I stopped by Jollivettes for a bit and though I didn't take a measurement I would say at least 14" or so out there and it's nice and clear yet, but it's soft around the landing.  With the temps this week it should hold up fine but it looks like possible 60s early next week.

water temp at the damn is up to 40 degrees this morning at 8am.
I don't think there will be much ice left by the weekend, and if there is, it will be gone by sunday because of the rain. The black river is open from Clinton street all they way to the main channel.
Time to chase the perch from the boat I guess.
Anyone else go open water too or primarily ice fisherman here?
I bet the damn will be packed to the gills with people Saturday morning.

No boat so I mainly slay trout, bass, pike.  Whatever I can get to with my waders.  Was out yesterday on the lake in a t-shirt, almost wore shorts just because.

Probably going to find 4 to 6 in most places, there was about 4.5 at the dam this morning.  There were guys at Jolivettes, Shenanigans, and Airport beach.
