WHATS THE BEST SETUP?
« on: Jan 17, 2005, 06:55 PM »
For Jigging for walleye     LINE type ,size  , Leaders , Lures?
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

fireline with a 6 lb mono leader if in a shack or warmer weather.  If mobile and no shack, out in the cold, Trilene XL 4 or 6 lb.  Lures, when you find some fish they bite just about anything out on the market.  Work each group of fish over with a slipfloat, light line, small hook, enough shot to anchor the minnow/a flashy jigging spoon - buckshot or swedish pimple, an aggressive swimbait like the jiggin raps, a subtle swim bait like the chubby darter.  Once you find fish with the spoons or raps you can usually coax a few more out of the school with more subtle offerings.  During midday anyway, when the light gets low, use something that will sink fast so you can get it right back down there when the fish move in and maintains good tight line so you can feel em tap it - during this time it matters very little what you use, as long as your in the proper location.

high_flags,

In very clear water 6-8lb Trilene Ultra Thin is a good choice. It is harder for the walleye to see and gives better action to a lure. If the water is off-colored or there are large walleye go with 10-12lb.
Like Creo said there are anynumber of lures on the market that will catch walleye. Three popular categories are Swimming lures, like the Jigging Rapala, the Jigging Shad rap or the Nils Master Jigging shad. Use the same jigging motion as with spoons lift-fall-hold.
Flash lures and Blades like the Bay de Noc Swedish Pimple, Buckshot rattle spoon,Acme Little Cleo and the Reef runner Cicada. The Cicada can be fished in an aggressive lift and drop.
The third type is the good old Jig. They can be rigged with a minnow or soft plastic. Some popular jig head are the round head jig, the Northland whistler or odd ball jig.

Good luck, and tight lines  ;)

A frabill ultra ice jigging rod in the 32", medium action. A shimano 1000 sahara reel spooled with 6 pound test p line fluoroclear. A #3 jigging rapala, or a #5 but 8 pound test line or even 10 for that one. Can't go wrong, sometimes need to tip with a small minnow head but not usually.
