Title: Lost my hero
Post by: Jigger Don on Jan 18, 2013, 11:55 AM
My grandfather passed last night  he was a great man. He lost his legs in the Korean war serving his country most men would have given up on life after losing your legs at 18 but that didn't  even slow him down he went on to father 7 children  and didn't let his disability hold him back from his love of the outdoors he hunted and fished his whole life and passed that passion down to his kids and grandchildren. He moved to constantia on Oneida lake in early 80s. He bought a max 6 wheeler and got around on the ice with that he loved ice fishing as much as he did open water and hunting he learned the lake over the years and passed his knowledge down everything I know about hunting and fishing came from him and on a bigger picture made me the man I am today. I was lucky to have him in my life as long as he was but a piece of my life is gone that can never be filled everytime I bring up walleye I will forever think of him

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like a very special man. I know what its like to lose one leg,(non military) and own a six wheel max.
Go ahead and remember. Hope in time it brings a smile when them eyes come up! Glad he passed the out door torch to you.

Sounds like a man I would have loved to meet and fish with.  Was he a Marine or a soldier?  Doesn't matter just curious.  Korean War was hell and guys like your grandfather sacrificed greatly to fight some bad people.  Our society should cherish those people.  My condolences.

That is what I am talking about.  The history of the Marine Corps was built with the blood of people like your grandfather fighting in Korea.....you were very lucky, indeed, to have had a grandfather like that......Semper Fi

Condolences... Know exactly the type of man you speak of. My grandfather was the same to me. Its been 20 yrs since he passed but I bet there is not a day goes by that hes not in my thoughts. In fact just yesterday I found my Maine Nonresident Fishing licsences from the two summers I spent up there. Those two pieces of paper are full of alot of great memories.

Sorry to hear about about your grandfathers passing, he was a good man. He was a wealth of hunting and fishing knowledge, my go to guy for fishing reports. I used many of his signature black jigs, something about that shape. He was my Oneida hero.

Sorry for your loss.  I think I know who your grandfather is.  I have lived in constantia my whole life and grew up on the lake.  I also went to school with 2 of his grandkids.  His service to our country is greatly appreciated.

First I want to send my deepest condolences. I too lost my hero that gave me the gift of the outdoors. He landed on Omaha beach on d day. But what I get is he is still teaching me even though he is not here. You to will still learn from a philosophy that he taught you that no one can take. Godspeed.

Jigger, you never lose a hero. You perpetuate your grandfather and do it well. I hope there is someone to do the same for you, and am betting there is. Nonetheless, loss is tough. Sorry for that, but glad to know you will always be able to feel as you do about your hero.
