I’ve seen some really (what I think) “weird ways” folks check the ice so that’s the reason for making this video. Might be a bit extreme but when you’re fishing alone early ice or unknown ice conditions it’s best to check each step. I keep my chisel sharpen and it’ll go through 3” of ice on a hard punch. Then I stay on the same path.

I’d rather get my hands wet than my entire body so feeling the ice thickness by hand from time to time gives me a better sense of actual thickness.

Had to rescue 3 people who fell through in my life of ice fishing who didn’t check the ice at all and didn’t heed to warnings. All of which could have been avoided. It’s not a good feeling.

I weren’t gonna post this video but based on the terrible ice conditions this season thought it might me a good idea only as a reminder.
Ice chisels are proactive and ice picks are reactive.

Thanks for posting this,it might be the differance weather some one goes home or becomes a statistic.

Like you, Ive been in on several rescues, once I used my spare tire as a float to help get some  one out, now early and late, I carry a throwable boat cushion with 50' of poly rope on it( I also keep a pair of screw in ice anchors in my box), hopefully,  the only thing I ever use it for is to kneel.

Agreed.... I always have my chisel and I do check, but not as aggressively (and properly) as you do.... I fish alone a lot and should step up my game.  I also need to put a new edge on my chisel, so thanks for that reminder as well.

Like Joe I carry a boat cushion and rope.... (which has been used to help others) but who's going to throw it to me when I fish alone?  Great reminder to be pro-active and not reactive.

Nice video and an important reminder to follow the ABC (Always be careful) when on any ice or fishing alone. After seeing my buddy fall in and myself as well trying to rescue them I now carry a 50 foot throw bag. It's a cheap insurance and takes up little space in the sled. Always better to have it and not need it than the opposite.

Great Video. Stopped a couple groups last time out that were beelining towards ice that was open water days prior, walking as one big group, without anyone spudding. Thankfully they had spuds with them to check as they continued but far too often people see others on the ice and assume its all safe.

Great safety vid Jiggin!

Every year I try to make it out to my island camp on winni to check on things. I usually bring a cordless drill with a 1" spade bit to check ice on the way. The spade bit goes through ice like butter so it's very quick and easy. There is absolutely no reason not to check ice when venturing out on it...

Stick with overloading my Otter Jr... which fits directly into my homemade snitty sled... with a stiff hitch for either sled...to the ball on my wheeker
