I was wondering if I could set up my hub style shelter as a darkhouse to spear from? I really need something totally portable. I'm pretty sure the hub itself will be dark enough (haven't had it out on the ice yet) as the fabric is black and the windows close up very well. My biggest concern is the floor. Will I need something for a floor? It seems like the bare ice might be hard on the eyes and distract from viewing down into the water.
Anybody want to chime in and give me their thoughts or prior experience? Thanks.

I spear out of my shappell wide house 6500 hub.no problem seeing down the hole.

Many put down anti-Fatigue Foam Mats. You can get them in a 4 pc set from Harbor Freight or Menards fairly cheap.

Yes, I had considered that option. I may try without first, but the mats would be a viable option. Thanks

I have a Clam Spearfisher hit and it is awesome. High, very dark and warm. Perfect for the task.

I would say 98% of us use hubs

We've speared out of my flipover before too. It works.

Second the Clam Spearfisher. this hub was designed for the spearing and doubles as a regular hub too. tall, big floor area and fully insulated. after having this I would never build a hard sided spear shack. fast set up and take down. for my decoy I have a cheap rattle reel hooked to a 1x2 and place that between the poles and the fabric of the roof.

I spear out of a eskimo 949i works well

I do have a flip over that I use for angling. The one I have is too short and too bright inside for spearing. Last year at the end of the season I shopped for and purchased a 6' by 6' hub that is tall AND dark inside, black material and the windows have really good covers. I bought it just to spear from. I'm pretty sure the shelter I have will be just fine, was only wondering about the need to cover or not cover the ice (floor).
Guessing that I will be only leaving the hub erected while I am there spearing, don't plan to leave it out unattended. Obviously I will be leaving a maker to warn others about the spear hole in the ice.

I spear out of my eskimo. Use these as a floor. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DAOSLVM/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Works pretty well.
