White perch in winter
« on: Dec 18, 2011, 08:13 AM »
Are white perch on the move in winter? Are they traveling together in big schools? I never seem to find them on the jig rod, randomly I will catch a big one on a trap with a shiner. Any thoughts?

Yes they are in schools in winter, But I have no idea how to locate them other then running and gunning until you find them .  I dont go out looking for them ,But if I get one on a tip up I rebait and go get my jig pole . Nine times out of ten the flag is up again before I get back . Then I jig that hole and can normally get like 5-8 perch out of it then there gone .  Reset the tipup and have the pole ready if they come back .  Most of the time I get 3-4 runs like that in ahole and thats all I need to fillet .

caught these in a couple hours in the middle of a blizzard last year. Took longer to find the truck than to get the fish, I can laugh about it now. @)

I find white perch like to stay most of the day in deep water in the small lakes 30 to 55 ft of water at sun set they move in to shoals to feed or close to shore,Once you find them in a lake they will be there most of the time. Once in a while they feed in the thermocline. This varies with each lake. This is where a flasher pays for inself. Had a few days last when i came home with over 50 ty fish The sooner you fillet them the easier they are to handle.

I usually find them 20ft deep or deeper, right off of an underwater point.

White perch have a nice sweet meat. and have more flesh then yellows. I make a boneless fillet and makes a tremendous fry when you use  an egg dip and coat them in Italian bread crumbs fry in a hot fry pan quickly in butter or olive oil. They also make a good casserole with bread crumbs and milk. When you fillet them within a couple of hours after catching the meat stays together better.

White perch are my favorite fresh water fish to eat. I catch them all year long, but during the ice fishing season, they are even better because the meat is a little firmer than other times of the year.
Some lakes you can get into them in the same spot day after day while other lakes, they keep on the move. I think those lakes just have less forage which keeps them on the move or their numbers are low which also keeps them on the move. Either way, their fun to catch and eat especially if you find a honey hole where they stay all day long. Don't give up. It's worth to check out new places.

hate to say but ive targeted white perch a couple of times plenty of them in lakes and ponds around here. Most the ponds with an abundant amount of them here are only like 10-16ft deep never caught one to this day. i figured im gonna find some yellow perch then up the size of the shinner and pray theres whites around. Bet they fight good on a jig pole

They do, although the bite can be funny sometimes.  I've been there on days when I could tell on the flasher that they really weren't feeding all that actively when they came through.  Usually I could coax them though.  Other days, you can't keep them off!!!  In the shallower ponds, I like to find the deepest place that exists in the pond.

Weezy  live bait is a waste on White perch. Cut bait on a lead head. if you catch one yellow perch .Scale it and cut it into small retanglar pieces  place one piece on the tip of your hook ..take off one piece at a time it keeps it fresh . make sure you put the hook tru your bait piece skin side first. this will keep them from stealing your bait. When your bait fish has no more use place it close to your hole place your heal on it grind it up. Then think about what you will do with it next i wont tell you what i do with it. I love eagles, crows and they love me.

It's fun with a fish finder and a jig rod. Best fish going when it comes to eating.
