Anybody hord leeches for winter...?
« on: Dec 27, 2012, 08:48 PM »
My post below--->

"How to keep minnows alive @ home/garage"

Got me thinking....
I remember going to my father-in-laws house. In his fridge in garage he had a ton of leeches in a covered pan.
I wondered if this was something I could do @ home so I would have leeches for the winter.....

Why not?

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

Because they curl up in a ball and make worthless bait.

They are warm blooded. They hate cold and are a terrible bait when the water gets cold. What do they look like when they are in a fridge set at 40º? they are either curled up or laying there motionless, now imagine what they will do in 33º water under the ice... nothing. If you were to hook them they would just be a little ball that wont move.

Maybe he was eating them? ;D  :sick:

Leeches are my big walleye bait of choice in the summer. The 27" 28" and 30" fish I caught last summer were all on leeches, I am far from anti leech. They just don't work well in the winter.

For some reason everywinter i find the bellies of perch and walleyes from one particular lake pretty full of leeches.  they have even puked them out on the ice and we have put them on and bam perch or something on.  this is the only lake i have found this in though.  maybe the food is slim and that is the only thing they key in on.
