Trust me you won't be fishing a Ken spoon in 40 feet of water.

Why not? I bought some at the end of ice season last year and haven't had the chance to try them yet. Just curious why they wouldn't work at that depth.  Thanks.

I used to fish for perch all the time back in southwest michigan before I joined the army.   My baits of choice were mostly tear drops. However.... I have had great success while fishing deeper/ suspended fish using  spoon, ie. castmaster, swedish pimple etc.  I would modify how I rigged and fished it however.  I would remove the treble hook that the spoons came with and then add a 1 1/2in- 3in 4lb leader below with either a small tear drop or finesse hook suspended below. Then tip the end with a waxie or spike. Wiglers work great too.  I found that the weight of the tear drops below the spoon and a shorter lead keep foul ups to a minimal.  This setup really calls in the suspend fish from a distance and they are always eager to grab the smaller "drop bait".    I have used simular baits that have the hook suspend by a piece of chain, but found that the 4lb flourcarbon worked better for me.

I'm interested in the bead spoons too and this place seems to have a good selection.

There really is not a wrong way to fish them. Let the fish dictate what they want. But for some reason they are hot for big perch. You can fish a predator and catch walleye at the same time . Only drawback is you get cut off a lot by pike.

I always wondered if Perch (Or any other given species) have the same habits in NY or PA as they would 2000 miles away like Montana or Iowa? A Perch is a Perch I guess....

When I started fishing the only lures you could get were what was made locally, we had Russian Hooks, I fished saginaw bay for perch, and russian hooks were the go to lure. Usually silver, with a mousie, or a fish eye. I would make sure I had the lures on the rods I was going to use next time out loaded with an eye so I always had bait. Never heard of a jack hook until about the 70's. I lost all my hooks to thief a few years ago, but have bought more at rummage sales. I've been having trouble posting pics, and hope this one will work and you can see what russian hooks look like.

I use slab grabbers which look like the same as the Russian spoons.. Have caught jumbo perch on them in every lake I fish here in PA and Simco in Canada.  Never tried slab grabbers perch jerking in the summer on Lake Erie but I'm sure they would work.

Swedish pimple 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch, Tingler/Tumbler in 1/16, 1/12 and 1/8, Slender spoon in 1/16 and 1/8, Kastmaster of various sizes, Buckshot 1/8 and 1/4, Buckshot flutter and flyer in the same sizes, Hali jig, Perch talker, Pk flutter.  Really any spoon with some action and flash or color will work.  Perch are aggressive by nature and aren't too picky about specific baits like walleye are.
