Whats a Jumbo Perch to You?

I've always considered the shape of the perch to dictate whether it is a jumbo or not.

I go by girth. The ones that are 9" long and 4" top to bottom are jumbos to me... even though they are only 9" long. The ones that are 9" long and about as round as a cigar are just perch.

Some people go by length... over 12" is a jumbo.

So what do you guys do? Whats a jumbo and whats just a perch to you?

Agree.....Over 12 is a jumbo........Biggest I have ever caught was 14 inches, shoulda got it mounted.

A jumbo definitely has the belly... the rest are just longer perch.

a true jumbo for me is about total size length/girth. 

If its a 9" fat butterball thats spent way to much time and the shrimp cart of the buffet table and not enough time chasing down minnows for that cut physic then it is considered a football.

If its a 12" skinny looks like one of those metrosexual freaks that spend to much time in the gym and eat one to many leafy green veggies and not near enough time shoveling shrimp into their face well then those are considered dinner.

Now in the rare occuerance that you get a fish that is able to put together the appropriate balance in its life, is a good family fish, eats a nice well balanced diet gets plenty of strenuous exercise and those nice broad shoulders, good strong tail muscles, has basically grown up to be your "All American Perch" you know the type, the fish that all the guy fish want to be like, all the girl fish want to be with, and the perfect fish to take home to mom and papa perch.  Well then that is considered a jumbo, and for me that fish gets a free pass, he's done everything right in his life, balances out his home, work, and spiritual life perfectly he deserves to continue that life and raise his little fry to live the same way in the hopes that one day they may also take after their father (or mother as it may be) and become the elusive "JUMBO"

I think of nice perch as something in the 1 Pound range. I think of Jumbos as 2 pounds and bigger. We have a few lakes where 2+pound perch call the waters home if you can find them. Nothing better.

Any time you catch a Perch with the hump on the back,consider yourself lucky. Love um ,catch um ,eat um ,the best fish that swims although I will keep crappie,gills and an occasional Bass. It is fishing through the ice that makes me happy.   Jerry

I had a buddy just catch one the other day that was 14" long and the girth was 11" was just about 2lbs
