Okay - I am out of control.
Stocked the jig box up.
NEXT - how good is the Nils Master USA - High-Velocity Hand Auger?????
I have been using a Rapala auger - likely swede-bore. I am really working hard with that one seeing as I often drill 12-20 holes.
How much better will it be???
I like to cut lots of holes and also move a lot(on foot - no 4 wheeler or skidoo, just me, my clam scout and my smitty sled ;D) so I was thinking of this auger vs a power auger (lined up a new 2hp Jiffy for 375 total)
Need to cut up to 15" of ice.

Bop on over to the "Equipment"/"Auger" threads...you'll find a bazillion results there!!! ;D

Any auger is better than a HT Fishing Hand Auger! Good luck with the Nils.
-
They are by far the best hand auger out here IMO for 130 you could grab a 6 inch one and be fine cutting many a hole. The only problem I hear is they are delicate you have to take care of the cutting head and replacements are expensive.
-
Click on the link below and check out all the threads. I personally love my strikemaster lazer power auger. Well worth the money. But when I used a hand auger, I always used a mora.

About that much.

Trooper this is my auger vs a Nils.
Mine (Not a antique spoon auger)

Yikes! Don't actually use the spoon augers you see at antique stores. ;)
Now you guys doing up there? I was in Ludlow when Irene hit. Unreal...
-
I have newish HT Fishing hand auger converted electric. And in Bennington the worst was the Woodford Bride was washed out on one end fixed now. And them mild flooding. Not to bad but lots of mud and water. The Woodford Bride is connecting Route 9 AKA Molly Stark Trail to other other towns east so it was a big thing to get it fixed. And Wilmington was hit HARD! They passed their 30 somethin flood level and there pretty far for work on repairs.

I have the Niles and the lazer I use them with my milw 18v drill. The lazer is fast but the Niles is much faster and its cuts faster then my friends gas augers. I kinda put my lazer up in the garage and use the Niles all the time, very seldom do I even use my gas auger.
-
Darn!!!!
Guess I "need" one of those too!!!!
I may be seperated/divorced by ice season at this rate.

I found an 8" Nils in the bargain cave at Cabela's a couple years ago and decided to try it. Best purchase I ever made in there. I love it. My Son used it to race a guy with a gas auger last year and beat him. Get one and you'll never look back.
-
just buy one and you wont be disapointed
-
alright - sold.
Thanks
-
I'm actually selling my Jiffy stx and putting some..............alri ght......ALOT more money towards a Nils 8 inch Power auger. I bought a 6" Nils hand auger for 75.00 that was brand new last year. Once I used it, I was hooked. Smooth and fast drilling. I would love to see a 6 inch on the power head. Using it as a hand auger is FAST! I'm sure using a power head will be a lot faster. :)
-
Comparing a Nils to any other hand auger is like comparing the best prime rib (Nils) you've ever had to a McDonald's hamburger
-
I am waay past sold!!!!!!!!
-
I head about Nils a few years ago and the first 2 or 3 reviews about it on here i was sold.
-
By far Nils is the best hand auger on the market..... Zip though 20 inches of ice super easy and super fast check you tube not my video but i have the same results
-
The best hands down, period!
-
My 6in is a power auger... 30 holes per battery on a milw 18v lith-ion batt
The Ice Master is an affordable two-piece conversion kit that turns your power drill and hand auger into a power auger! It consists of the exclusive retainer disk and adapting pin. They have it for the Niles, I think I was the first one to buy one.
-
Nils is a Mercedes and everything else is a Yugo.
-
alright - sold.
Thanks
try this on, mine are the first ever made and still going strong over 25 years old and still going they were tanaka[rapala] back then and i spend 3 months a year on the ice miss maybe 4 or 5 days and they still rip up the ice ,and i'm older than dirt and don't even think about my power unit until the ice gets over 16"stiff eyes on the ice is in my crystal ball :woot: and striped darters to ;)

I upgraded to a nils from a mora and theres no competition sold all my moras at a yardsale. I have the 8 inch and cut threw 2 foot thick ice like its butter, next to my flasher its the best thing i've ever bought. Hands down the best hand auger made.

I love my Nils.
TIP: Dont let your friends use it unless you are standing there.
All it takes is one careless drop and it can mess up the head on you and you have to replace it.
TIP: Dont let anyone sharpen your Nils blade for you unless you are 100% sure they know how to sharpen a nils blade. They can mess it up hardcore and you will again have to replace it.

I agree...the first thing I upgraded to from tip ups was a flasher...then got rid of the jiffy for a nil's...now im way lighter on the ice..no gas..and drilling holes faster..I really like my 6in...looking to put a drill on it this year...but its really not worth it, its fast enough anyways..I cut 17in of ice in 30turns last year..and the off set handle makes it a breeze.
-
They are awesome... but... Put an off-set handle on a Lazer and anyone would be hard pressed to tell the difference. And trust me, I have cut a ton of holes with both brands. Not sure how easy it is finding a handle for a Laser though. Mine is around 10-12 years old... ;D

After reading dozens of old posts, reviews and watching skinnytrucker's video over and over, I had to pull the trigger. I just placed an order at Cabela's for the 8" Nils. ;D I've been using a Mora since 1988 and figured it was time for an upgrade. I can't wait to get it! Now, where can I order a frozen lake to try it out?

If Cabela's were to sell one, I'm sure you'd find plenty of guys on this site willing to chip in on the cost. Good luck with your Nils. You won't regret it.

Not sure what you mean, but Cabela's has both the 6" and 8" in stock. Also, promo code WOCTOBER gives you free shipping over $150. I needed a few other items from the boating department, so the auger only cost me $149.99.

what type of cutting head of the lazer use? ive foudn that its not the offset handles that make me cut faster but the nils head.
-
Well, I did it! I just pulled the trigger on a new Nils 8" power auger. Like I've said, I have the 6 inch hand auger already and it is DEADLY! I'm excited to see what it's going to be like with an engine on it! I can't wait for the hard water to come!
-
I bought a power Nils this summer too and I can't wait for the ice!
-
I've been looking for an offset handle for my Laser for a while now. I think Strikemaster had a few in stock at the beginning of last season, but I missed the window.
I really like my 6" Laser, and while I'm sure I'd like the 6" Nils also, it's hard to drop the money on an auger the same size. I may squirrel away a few dollars for the 4.5" though...
Hooked the Laser up to a drill last season - I made my fishing buddy do a double take, I had both holes punched before he had is 8" auger even started.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That is the reason I made it so others can see just how good it is.

UPS just delivered my Nils 8"hand auger. ;D What a beauty! Those blades sure look surgical and I can see why you have to be very careful with them. Snow is in the forecast for tomorrow too. Won't be long before I'll be drilling a hole with this fine piece of craftsmanship.

The Nor Mark Fin-Bore uses a double offset handle design and the same blades as a Lazer. The handle design offers maximum turning power.
