Don't do it...If you're going out by yourself, it's too much of a risk. Wearing a PFD is all fine and dandy BUT....are you gonna be able to pull yourself out? Evens with picks you may not be able to. Wait until you can go out with someone else...even 2" is risking it...

Let’s see, the weatherman is calling for 12 – 16 inches of snow tonight In north central Ohio.

I’m not sure what 16 inches of snow would weigh, but I’m thinking about the only thing that would make me go onto 1 ½ inches of ice with a foot or more of snow on it would be to try and save the life of another person.
More than likely we would both have our names in the newspaper the next morning.
In the Obituaries.
Give it a few more days – It is suppose to get down below 0 in a few days.

They are only fish, and not worth the risk.  Wait.  Or fly up here, we have over a foot on the local lakes and two feet on the interior lakes.  You can find fairly cheap air fare to Alaska this time of year.

I weigh 110 and I fished a stream with 1 1/2 inches of ice. I would not advise doing it. I broke the ice twice and barely stayed dry.

Can anyone say with 100% absolute certainty that they know where every feeder stream and/or underwater spring may be in any body of water?

Don't do it.  An 1 1/2 or two inches of good ice MAY support you, but what if you unknowingly walk over a spring where the ice is an inch or less?  And what if the ice is so thin that it keeps breaking as you try to pull yourself out?  And what if it's so thin that you risk the lives of people who may try and rescue you?

I wouldn't want the good people on ICESHANTY remembering me every year with a post that starts out something like "...Remember that guy Thor.  We thought he was a fool for buying an Ice Machine instead of Vex, then the dumb-a$$ went and tried to fish on 1 1/2 inches of ice...."

One more thing.....1 1/2 inches of ice near shore is more than likely NOT 1 1/2 inches farther out....but never the less, you have no reason to be out on ice that thin...if you plan on it, leave your gear home, and have it sent to me...

matt... don't. take everyones advice and wait. i've fished hard water going on 30 years and every year gets better. the older i get, the more i think about how many days i have left. got a vex last year for christmas, couldn't wait to try it out. went to a lake known for freezing hard and fast.  heard they were catching crappies. 2 in. of ice saw a guy at the dock with tip ups along the edge. said he went out and the ice was cracking. about dark a guy pulls in, walks out on the ice like he's goin in to walmart, and starts catching fish. other people joined him,(me too). today i wouldn't. last year we had cold but no snow at first ice,the best. this year in central ohio, we've had a little cold, thin ice, snow, heat, rain, cold, snow, rain, etc. snow insulates the ice, so it doesen't freeze as well. it also creates bubbles(?) (air)? which makes ice less safe. my rule is never be the first one out.let someone else get wet, and always remember......  THERE IS NO SAFE ICE!!!!
btw, saw a site last year, put out by the army i think that gave all kinds of good info about different ice conditions. maybe someone knows of this site. good advice.

Wait another week or so.  Then fish so darn much you get sick of it and look foreward to spring!
