What do you guys do with dead spikes?
« on: Jan 22, 2009, 09:04 PM »
Got a few that were left out overnight and froze. Do you:

A. - Throw 'em out?
B. - Use 'em anyway?
C. - Throw 'em in the hole to attract fish?
D. - Dump 'em under the wife's pillow?

Chime in..............

Put em in your mouth until they thaw and keep right on using them.  Once they turn black though, gotta toss em!

Thaw and use until they turn brown, and then throw them down the hole.

I came across this as I was reading the Indiana Fishing regulations.  Its on page 45..."Emptying bait buckets can contaminate
a body of water with undesirable fish. Fishing worms should be discarded in trash containers."

I still like the Mexico idea though.

On the other hand, What do you do when they turn into pupae or cocoon stage?

My last box mostly went to waste, most turned to pupae stage before I could use them. So I put them into a jar with holes in lid and keep them around 85 temp.. They should have turned into flies who will lay eggs that turn into spikes. But nothing happened, no flies...Maybe the bait producer add something to the feed to keep them from hatching to flies....

Anyone ever try to raise their own spikes in the winter,. I heard its easy in the summer when its hot and you can do it outdoors.

An old man that owned a bait shop years ago told me the way to keep spikes alive. Put them in a ziplock baggie and push all the air out of the bag and then zip shut. Keep them in the door of fridge, I ordered about 400 spikes in 1st week of december and I am still using them and will until they are gone. I do this every year and have for yrs...........Gaddabou t

mix them with fish cleaning scraps. place in a zip lock bag with a large rock and freeze. take that fishing, remove the bag and toss down the hole. it will melt and attract fish for hours. dont do it on public water though, its illegal to chum! ::)

I was looking for the chumming rules last summer in the Indiana Fishing Regulations. Did they change this rule lately? I, too, thought it was illegal to chum in Indiana waters. (I haven't done it yet since I can't find a reference for it.)

depending on how fast you find em.

So by doing this, none of the go into the pupae cocoon stage? Maybe takeing the air out helps keep them from cocooning. Keeping them alive is not my problem. My problem is keeping them from cocooning. I have always kepted them cold in fridge. Even icefishing I don't put them in my pocket like I do my beemoth. Warmth is what I read will make them go into the coccon stage, then they can't be used. I will try putting them in a bag without air, can't hurt.

I only store them in fridge in ziplock baggie. I carry them fishing in a skoal box (no air holes) Try it it works. I been doing this for many years. I wouldn't want to carry them out in bag..be a pain in butt.

If I only have two packs of spikes, one dead one alive, I still take the dead ones.  If you run out of the live ones and the fish are aggressive the dead ones could come in handy.  I do the same with dead crappie minnows, I don't throw them out until the end of the fishing trip as you might get into a school of crappie and run out of live active minnows, then a dead minnow jigged properly comes in handy.

I keep mine in a bait puck in the bottom of the fridge.  Then I take only what I need for the day in a second bait puck.  Constant swings in temperature will trigger pupation...storage info.

I keep my bait in the fridge too.  I don't think she likes it but it won't change.

I have always had problems keeping them alive from one weekend of fishing to another.  The last batch I bought was from Knutson's in Michingan.  A hundred pack were in some kind of sand like packing.  I purchsed them on 1/2/09, and they were still in good shape as of yesterday.  I kept them in a Bait Puck in the spare refrigerator at 34 F.  Other than picking out a few black ones each week, they were still going strong.  I forgot to get 'em out of my Yukon last night and they froze.  I used them tonight on my pond and put about a dozen 8-9" gills on the ice with 'em.

Jeff
