Title: Wisconsin Dells Area
Post by: ltlredexpress on Jan 22, 2019, 12:08 PM
Looking for some info on the Dells area if there are some lakes that are within driving distance for icefishing.   We are coming up and staying at the Dells the weekend of the 8th of February and I am hoping to get out and do some icefishing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!

One of the most scenic spots in the dells area would be Devils Lake State Park, south of the dells.  You would fish for stocked brown trout in the 12 to 16 inch range.  The south end of the lake is probably your best bet.  One of the neatest areas to fish in the neighborhood, even if the fish don't cooperate.

I hate Devils Lake I got busted there once in my younger days. Not on the lake or fishing. The park rangers didn't like fireworks or smoking a little weed back in the late 1970's. lol

Are Castle Rock and Petenwell to big to walk?  How is it if you use 4 wheelers, is the snow to deep?

Thanks!

I would not be walking for either, yes 4 wheelers will work. There should be trails on the lakes from guys fishing since the snow. At Petenwell I usually go out from the Lure Bar (google it for address), it's been a couple years since i went there but am pretty sure you can still park there and drive out onto the lake. Look for the shanty's when you get there to see where people are fishing. Good luck.

I forgot to mention Lake Delton it might be right next to your hotel. It did drain out completely some years back but was restocked and could be worth trying in morning for 30 min or late afternoon for a bit.

We lost nearly 20 inches of snow in two days.  I think any walk this coming weekend will be doable.  Might even need creepers.  Depends on the storms hitting midweek, but it’s gotta be better than the deep stuff before the melt.  Stay safe if you venture onto a flowage after this warmth and rain.

Thanks for the help and info!!

Any suggestions as far as the best lakes to hit up for panfish and others for walleye lakes?  Any tips or suggestions of best baits to use would be great!! Messaging is fine if you would like, not looking for specific spots but that's always nice and appreciated too.!
😀

I've ice fished below the Dells dam before for walleyes.  I have no idea if there is ice or how thick it is, but it's an option.  I wouldn't go out unless you saw other people out there.  We used fathead minnows for bait, and just vertical jigged them.
