So cool I had to share
« on: Mar 19, 2021, 09:08 AM »

A buddy sent me this photo last night taken on his property.  His timing was perfect. Had to share.

I've seen them crushed under logs before, despite the folk lore that they can control the felled tree  , they cant.. that is a very cool picture, classic  widow maker.. thanks for sharing.

That is very cool! I live next door to an active beaver pond and I noticed this morning while walking the dog they have started cutting on my property right at the edge of my (mowed) areas. Not sure if the toothy critter was disturbed but the sapling he cut was not dragged back to the pond as it was still lying on my lawn.
Lots of fox and several coyotes frequent the property...

Very cool. Kind of amazing how little a tree needs to stay standing. I'm sure it won't be for long though

OldCaveman thank you for sharing the photo like others i'm surprised the tree is still standing. May your buddy not have any serious problems from the beaver activity.

That’s neat! It must have been hung up in a tree or something?

Your right Jason,  the photo was taken Wednesday and the tree came down Thursday ( windy if I remember correctly).

I’ve seen them cut trees on the side of a road that the pond is next to it and drop them in the pond. They are very good at what they do.

I believe that they don't finish the job, they are to smart. They let the wind take care of the dangerous part.

Never seen one crushed, but they definitely can't control where they fall. They miss the creeks and rivers they try to dam up all the time

I've seen it twice, once in person ( I was a ADC trapper for many years) and once in a national geographic documentary..

I've been told it's usually the young ones ( under 2 ) that attack larger trees that are pretty much non edible,an old timer told me it was because "they didn't know any better" and the teeth on the young ones grow more rapidly than the older ones, so they need to chew even more, and thus pick the hard wood.. older , wiser ones, pick trees that are edible ( soft woods) and dont waste energy or time on useless timber..I've never seen that theory in print, but I have never heard a better explanation  either.

I think they sometimes fell trees, esp will, primarily for food rather than for dam or house building. Some seem to get overly ambitious---I saw a tree that was far to big for 1 person to wrap their arms around encircled with bite marks on the Toronto waterfront.
Keep yer stick on the ice!
