Yes, I have seen guys fishing very close to shore with a dangling crawler. I'm not convinced they work yet. I usually stick to shiners.

where do you have 60* weather, and unfrozen ground the 1st part of January and still have hard water to fish on?

Used them many times and usually catch perch or bluegills. Also buy small wigglers to tip my crappie jigs with have more action than waxworms :'(
