WIND, WIND, AND MORE WIND!
« on: Dec 14, 2021, 11:07 PM »
Even by Wyoming standards, it seems like the past few years have been windier than usual during November and December. Even in parts of Wyoming, that are usually not as windy compared to other areas, have been gusting pretty good. Strong winds, reservoirs freezing over, and no snow around most reservoirs, will create some really bad, sand-laced ice this year. Hope we get a little snow, before all the reservoirs freeze over, otherwise dull auger blades will be piling up quickly from drilling through layers of sand!

Yep.  This exactly.  Wind with no snow cover during ice formation = dirty ice.  I have a strikemaster lite flight which is great...except with dirty ice. The dirty ice on w3 last year made brand new blades instantly dull enough i have to lean on the drill heavy to get it to cut.   l Think I might buy a kdrill with a chipper blade this year.  Small anecdote..a week or so ago i stopped by leazenby by laramie to see if ice was forming.  A game and fish person was operating heavy machinery, moving what looked like cement blocks along the raised edge of the lake.  It was super windy that day, and dry.  The amount of dirt that backhoe loader had flung into the air while just driving and the wind blew on the ice was unbelievable.  You will absolutely ruin your blades on leazenby this year if that ice held and that amount of dirt is in the ice.

I hear you on the wind, just wish the wind tunnel would stop so the ice can form and not get blown off, wind is whipping it up really good here right now with some snow starting but I guess it will be in Nebraska or Colorado before it hits the ground with the wind going so hard, was used to the wind being a normal thing when in school at UW but here never have had the wind like we have had the last few years.

Last year was really bad on blades. Glad they sharpened my k-drill blades for free. Make sure you have extra blades. Dont know if there is a shortage of blades just like a lot of things this year. Damn it is really blowing hard today.

I'll share!!!!!! And...we now have a T'nado watch and severe T-storm WARNING out...

NWS said this is the first ever T'nado in December in Minnesota history. Oh, and it's 64* right now..shattered the last high temp record from 1954 of 51* for this day.

...HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph
  expected.

* WHERE...Portions of north central and northeast Iowa and
  southeast Minnesota.

* WHEN...Until 6 AM CST Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds tonight could blow down trees and
power lines causing power outages, possibly for a prolonged
period of time. Travel will be difficult, especially for high
profile vehicles. Empty semi-trailers will run the risk of
  being blown over.

I kinda doubt any ice fishing is gonna happen her before February....right when our licenses expire.

Yup, we got smacked with a tornado. That set a new first time record. Pretty much OK in the city, but did have 77 MPH winds, some trees and such down. Bit south of us in the country, they got smucked. T'nado flattened barns, took roofs off houses, wrecked grain bins, etc. I just hope everyone is OK.
Boy, how much can people take in a year???!!   ??? :-\

Hate to say it, but there could be more on the way! 89 mph. winds here today, with several downed trees, damage to buildings, road closures, and power outages. All heading East! Hopefully it calms down before it gets too far East! Good luck Reb!
