What is a keeper size perch?
« on: Dec 17, 2007, 10:36 PM »
Fished on Saturday and caught 1 perch and a bunch of 3-4 inch bass. But what do you consider keeper size?

It depends on how hungry I am.
Kids that hunt, trap and fish don't mug little old ladies.

Big moves to find'em, small moves to catch'em!

I agree, 9" is a good starting point! My local lake really starts to shine in the 10-11" range.

I would say 8". About the same size fillet as you'd get at a restraunt. But they don't get nice till bout 10-11".

i still say that the smaller perch are the tastiest. i like them anywhere from 7- 10 inches. the larger ones i give away or release esp. the females with eggs. i know a certain guy that caught a 17" perch and ate it not even thinking about a mount or release. awesome perch!!!!!!!!!!!

9" and up.  And if it is a hawg either decide if you are going to mount it or put it back to catch another day.  PC

I would say that it deepends on the lake that you fish if it is real deep(100ft and up) and holds thousands of perch just take as many as you need from that year class. And perch are so easy to clean that I would say as long as its over 6" its ok to keep um but those type of lakes are usually stocked with fish between 8" and 12" any way so keep what you want and save the rest.
And the small lakes(no deeper than 40ft) that hold jumbos don't take em unless they are 10" you wont catch as many keepers but these type of lakes can be over fished very easily.

Depends upon the water body. I would not keep a limit of 10-14 inch jumbos from a 50 acre lake, I would mix in 7 on up. On a larger body of water like St. CLaire I would not hesitate to keep 10+ for the entire limit.

I would say a nice fat 8" and up would be good.  If it was a small land locked lake I would go with 9-10".  I just think you need to look at the spawning area and size.   If I catch nice size perch early, I let any question mark ones go there after.   :)

8-10" is what I'm willing to fillet.  I'll keep larger but most are 10" or less.  Smaller is too much of a pain to fillet.

Guess I should have quantified...if it is over 11" then it is worth making a meal out of to me. I usually give them away or C&R. Finally kept my first ones a few weeks ago in over 15+yrs since they were over 11".
