The majority of the perch I catch are on tip-ups....Never had much luck with a jig, not good with the finesse of it. :P

For agressive Perch I think a tip up works fine, but if they are finicky at all the only way to land them is to get jiggy with it! PC

Those perch are sly ones, and bait stealers to boot. I haven't had a lot of luck with the tip ups. But for the most fun ;D a good rod and gettin' jiggy with them can't be beat!

i used to fish lake Chamolain alot, and with a 15 tip-up limit there were many days when all we did was walk from tip-up to tip-up carrying a bait pail and piling up perch
-
I've been there!

Om lake Champlain there is a 15 tip-up limit but the most I ever put in was 10 because I cant keep up with all the flags :P ;D.
-
Yea I get them on tip-ups. Sometimes they will attack a 10 inch sucker. I have caught them on 7 inch golden shiners. Really gets your heart pumping when your flag goes up, only to set the hook and bring in a perch >:(. Jigging is far more effective in my opinion though.....
-
Get em all the time especially when i use small minnows
-
Put some tip-ups out or some tip downs out and jig while watching and
you should catch fish. Wow I do not know what I would do with 15 lines in
at once.
-
I get perch on tipups frequently. If one hole is more active then the others I'll adjust the baits on my other tipups to the one thats hot.If that one hole is hot after a few fish I'll pull the tipup and jig and smash the rest of the school jigging. And what I'll do is watch to see which way my line is heading out from the last fish caught.I'll then cut holes in that direction to try to relocate the school and jig the holes in that direction,if that hole seems to cool down.Works well when you have fishing partners you can fish one end of that new line of hole and your partner(s) can work the other.

I caught two of them on tip-ups last time I was up to Bay Da Noc. They bit on 6''+ suckers.

Perch were hitting 6" plus suckers ??? ??? ???
Id like to catch those perch
-
tip downs, but ya same difference
usually just a locator then thats were i like to start jiggin
-
I've caught some large perch on tip-ups here and there. usually, they don't hook themselves, but make a pest of themselves constantly setting my flags off
-

Yeah. We were going after monster walleye and they were "bonus" fish. One was 12'' and the other 12.5''.
-
tip-ups with 2 -4 inch shiners work great!

This is what i used to do, only with tip-ups. I would set them in a few different areas and cut extra holes when I would get a few flags in an area i would jig in the extra holes. I own tip-downs now I will be using them tommorrow. When I lived in NH we often had days where we could not get a jig in the water ;D I was just thinking of my tip-downs i won them near the end of last years ice season and hardly used them i am heading to fish for perch cannot see any better time to use them.
-
Yeah, I get them on tip-ups all the time. I usually set a couple up on top for trout, and a couple on bottom for perch. Very rarely will I get a perch on a trap that's set just under the ice.
-
Many times... especially at Sodus
-
i will get back to you tomorrow on this topic.......going to try tip ups for perch for the first time.....usually going after eyes when i use them but my buddy swears by it so here goes
-
The easier way to catch some big perch. Caught the one in my profile picture on a tip up.
-
oh yeah some real nice ones too both yellows and whites
-
Some of my best yellows were taken on tip-ups :)
-
Before i put the tip ups away and started jigging i would catch some monster pearch on pike shiners!!!!!!!!

oh yeah perch are voracious feeders that is why I am not afraid to use bigger bait on my tip-ups when targeting perch.
-
i catch alot of perch on jigs and tip ups, but all the big ones i get are on tip ups
-
I usually get them by jigging, but like to set up a tip up with a 5 - 8 inch minnow for the first hour or so of fishing. After a while i move the tip up and jig the hole the tip up was in, seems like they school up around the minnow ;D
-
We fish a small lake up north and can jig all the perch you could want ,but they are all small, but if you set tip ups with 3" minnies you will catch big perch up to 15".
-
cant keep them off the traps :( bait thiefs I think you could catch them on a dirty sock
-
admit it john. you love perch! lol!
-
just to keep the eagles and yotes in food!
-
even the dump ducks wont take em!

I caught real nice perch on a tip-up last season. Just use a real small crappie minnow.
-
Wish I could catch them but have had them steal the bait from though.
-
Yep late ice fishing for walleye
-
I do all the time. Actually I have a set of 40 ups set up for perch and use them as a search tool to find them. I use size 10 red hooks and small shiners and when I get a few in a particular spot I will drill more holes in that area and jig.
-
Allways caught most of my biggest Perch on tip-ups baited with
emerald shiners or small golden shiners
-
If your refering to those yellow and black stiped junk fish which are notorious for stealing bait (then yes) many many. ;D Once your on a perch hole you cant keep em off your line. The eagles seem to really like em once you throw them out on the ice! (alledgely)
-
I don't use tipups real often but I catch perch on tipups, usually larger perch. If you want to catch perch jigging is by far the best way to get them.
-
I fish those long strings on Champlain too. They are the best way on some parts of the lake. 15 holes does get tiresome with a hand auger. We usually set them in rows along a reef and drive the truck between them to the far ones. Just buy a good number of pinheads and get ready for some action if the day is good. When they hit fast and there's not much snow I lace up the hockey skates. Its a great way to find jigging holes. Just pick the hot tip up holes and there ya go.
-
Does this count or am I cheating? ;D
-
i use to catch monsters on tip ups but i do not use them as much now.
-
Biggest has been just over 15". Caught on a medium sucker minnow.
-
arghhhhhh tooo often
