It's sand and fine pebble up to 1/4 inch. They must have been blown off shore and rolled down the channel. There is much less of this staff even right below Gardiner Dam.
.  Yeah if you fish deifenbaker a lot your gonna have to learn to touch up your blades. Lack of snow+Lots of sand + heavy winds = dull blades.

Fishing wasn't very good lately. I found one walleye and some aggressive perch. Well, it's time to find other reasons to keep going to lake, like putting hand auger-sharpening technique to test. Last time I dull my blades was in 2013 when I drilled into 0 depth of water.

those flat curved hand auger type blades can be done with a sharpener they sell just for them at the fishing hole or cabelas. they can  do an good job on keeping them  fairly sharp and taking the burrs off.  its the serrated ones that you need some experience on.

Hi there ToonFisher. If you head out to the area where we caught the burbot and white fish, you won't have any sand to deal with, and you'll catch a lot of fish. Driving on the main body of the lake should be safe now especially with your small car.  Cal

Hi Flyboy,
It would be a good exercise to walk to your spot, ~2/3 km off shore.

Yes, for sure, it's only a 5 or 6 minute walk. Easy to pull a plastic sled with so little snow.

I will try your spot next time. It may just be  flyboy yourself and friend ~10 days ago that my friend took a burbot from.

How has it been in Coteau Bay, or the spillway? I have been fishing the sunken island with moderate success. Taking the wives out tomorrow wouldnt mind getting them on a little bit more action then the sunken island provides.

Thanks.

Hey guys, just wondering if there’s driving access around Douglas? Hoping to head out Saturday and we have a limited mobility senior with us. Not too worried about driving around on the ice but if we could get on the ice at the Douglas boat launch then walk short distances from there that’s good enough for us. If anyone’s been out that way let me know, or if there’s a better place to get on, we’re open to suggestions?

There is no winter access at Douglas. The boat launch is blown in with sand and then with the lake being down it is a long drive to the ice and then there is a ridge of ice to get over. Your best bet would be to go on the ice at Mistussine boat launch. Access is good. You would not be able to get to Douglas because of a heave that runs across the lake between Mistussine and the Park. The only other close areas are Elbow Harbour and Tufts Bay. Good luck.

Will be fishing with your friend J.L. tomorrow morning, same place as last time.  Will be in silver ram truck and an aluminum ice shelter. Flyboy

Good luck Flyboy. Weather seems fine this weekend.

Weather is not too bad. Cal and I had a prety good day today. I got my first jumbo perch (12" long) and first Burbot (over 7lb) in my life. I like to meet you on ice some day.

Saturdays are for driving my boy around for sports. I will try today or next weekend. You will get more burbot when positive temperature sets in.

Guarding one hole in the tent Sunday afternoon. Despite sunshine it's very cold. Mark a few fish in 3 hours but no catch.

Drifted but thin. There's now a 1/2" layer of snow on the ice but around the lake there isn't much else

Hi guys, I'm thinking of heading to Diefenbaker one day this weekend.  I've only fished it in the summer with moderate success.  Just wondering if someone could provide me with a general area where to go?  Preferably somewhere I can walk on from shore.  I will be coming from Saskatoon.  Thanks.

There are a few trout and burbot being caught at Elbow Harbour in shallow water. Easy walk on, but is no problem driving. Good luck.

I was wondering where would be a good area to try for Rainbow trout on Diefenbaker? I would be driving from the Regina area. Not looking for GPS locations just general areas where the Rainbows would be good to fish at.

Thanks,

the fishing geeks said deifenbaker has been unreal for trout this year and that the nets must have broke again or released more trout again. that being said i dont have any good info on where these nets are and where the rainbows are

Do they move these nets around to different areas? I can see the nets on Google earth.

the nets are south east of the town of Birsay. More south than east. They are  permanent fixtures. I fished it 3 weeks ago without a rainbow to be had. Not many others out there were having any luck either so , was there a loss of rainbows...i doubt it..every yr. we here there was a loss of rainbows. The fish farm staff will tell you its nothing more than rumors

Well I made it out to Diefenbaker today for the first time and it was slow.  Had 3 flags all day.  My wife landed a 9.5# pike and my little girl got a 18# pike.   It would have been really nice, but there was a bit of a nasty wind.  At least no skunk.  Lol

Any shallow flats with access to deep water is good for rainbows. Fish 4-8ft of water jigging all throughout the column with something small and flashy tipped with minnow. Ive been catching 1-3 every day this year in a few spots.
