not growing up ice fishing I knew nothing when I started about 5-6years ago. Came on here and kept hearing all this "Spud Bar" stuff. Figured saftey is a good thing so I bought one and use it early and late ice. Have had a couple guys look at me like I was stupid but they were the stupid ones walking out on unknown ice. the Spud bar has kept me on top so far. I went early this season to a trout lake with people out on it fishing. I got 15' from bank and put the Spud thru on the first wack. My fishing partner looked at me from the bank with the throw rope in his hands and said " I think ya better back up". I did. We didn't fish that day.
