Title: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: LoneWolf on Jan 11, 2011, 11:33 AM

Each year I notice members posting the modifications they do to their sleds .. jet sleds or others. I thought by posting a "SLED MODS" thread we would have an area where members could show their ingenuity and others could learn.  ;)

I only did minor, light weight mods to mine but I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Did the bucket mod a few weeks back. The buckets carry my minnows, tackle, rod holders, misc. clothing, fish etc ......but they take up way to much space in the sled and they are always sliding around. I took a couple of wall angle brackets, a piece of unistrut, and a couple horsefeed bucket holders to make it. I also mounted some rod holders on the inside to keep them from geting damaged and tangled. The buckets are secured and you can go up and down some pretty steep hills without worring about things falling out. I now have the entire sled open for my power auger and flasher. It added a few pounds but there was no way I was going to get everything in the sled.

Out on the ice the buckets would be racing across the ice at record past the sled would be full of snow and ice this was all in a twenty four time frame. It may be just me but after years the sled is always covered with every thing inside never mind when the wind took the sled past the atv rear tires and flipped the sled every thing went flying anyway.
Not trying to be a kill joy but maybe it is just me every time out is an adventure.PS this past weekend the minnow bucket was lost $160 okley sunglasses and who knows what else.

It sounds like you need a heavier sled .. maybe a wooden sled on ski's. You're also using an ATV so the weight doesn't matter to you.
Quite a few of us are on foot and we try to keep the weight down. I keep my bucket/seat secured in my sled just for the reason you described. I'll try to take some pics later.

I'll post pictures of mine in a couple of days. Working on a few more changes then should be good to go. Doesn't help my Nils/ Tanaka setup isn't here yet so I can truely finish up the mounting system.

At a minimum, a solid tow bar, and if you already have that.... well... then you just need to slow down a bit.....

Here are a few of mine. The front auger support is still a work in progress but as that my Tanaka Powerhead hasn't arrived kind of hard to finalize any plans without it.

On my Strikemaster Glide Lite this allows me to carry my Sonic Ice Hopper that holds my Vex, 5 Rod/ Reel combos, Ice Scoop, Glen's Outdoors 1 man Hub (for the really windy days), Tackle Bags, Propane Lantern (for night fishing).

Once I pop up the hub shelter it fits over the sled so I can keep everything inside the tent minus the auger. I can use the propane lantern for both light and heat if need be. Can honestly say with the Sno Suit I don't ever get cold but when I have a buddy go with its nice to have a base camp for them as they don't typically dress warm enough.

I still have a few things to finish up but will get those taken care of as I get time and once my power head arrives. Also this spring I plan on painting the PVC black and securing the pole holders once they are painted with a few screws. I also want to put some runners on the sled to help protect the bottom.

I'm sorry it took so long .. I've been busy with the Online Tournament and the local Get Together. As I had said previously I'm on foot and I was looking for light weight yet efficient. There aren't any elaborate modifications but they are light and work.
The first thing I did was replace the pull rope. The original was just over 8 feet. The new rope is right at 15 feet.
I added copper pipe clamps (the kind to secure plumbing to a wall) with SS hardware and ran rubber straps. This keeps my 7 gal bucket w/seat secure in the sled as well as securing other gear. I leave the bucket secured and sit on it in the sled as the rod holder is located perfectly. If I need to I can untie the knots in the straps and run them "criss cross" for added security and/or to secure my auger.
I utilized the same rod holders from my Fish Trap to the jet sled. I used 2 SS fender washers and a 2 pieces of aluminum angle with SS hardware.
I added reflective tape to both sides and reflectors to the rear.
I made a folding board that I can unfold, place across the front of the sled and use for my grill. The rubber straps can be ran across each side of the board to stabilize it if need be.

Again I made this to be light weight and functional for deep snow conditions etc.. I always have the Fish Trap for more ideal conditions.

I built a box that covers my entire Jetsled XL.  It has two doors.  One will open by itself.
The other door will open both doors.  It greatly increases the amount of stuff I can carry.
I added UHMW strips to the bottom of my sled also.

If I would do it over, I would make the walls 9" high instead of 15".  I might cut it down
next year.

Made out of 1/4 plywood, coated with marine epoxy, then painted.  1/2" x 1/2" pine sticks for internal frame.
Less than double weight of Jet Sled XL.   I made it so high so I could sit on it, but I am going to cut it down some
to make it easier to put into the Burb or back of the truck (with a cover on the bed).

It is actually pretty balanced, if you pull up on the front it doesn't try to flip over backwards which I was afraid of. Actually headed out now to give it a test run.

Took it out for a run today and this thing pulls oh so nice and smooth. No tipping, rocking or uneven weight distribution that I have seen. Took it through some rough areas and it traveled and tracked very well. Have to say this setup is a winner.

ive heard of some people people waxing the bottom of their sleds, also some say that the silicone spray stuf works good too.  I just found some stuff at work called camie 2000 that is similar to the silicone stuf.  Im gonna give that a whirl and will test on thursday.  Ill let you know how it works.

I've been using the spray silicone for years. It's quick and easy. Just stand the sled up, spray and wipe down. It dries pretty fast and leaves a slick finish.

Old Thule roof rack and some curbside skis; a few bolts and angle aluminum at the hardware store.
A very easy pulling setup.

Don't know about PAM, or silicone spray... I just give mine a shot of WD40 on the bottom and rub it in from time to time.  Works fine, and is free because I already have many cans of it around the house.

No, don't use WD40 on the skis.  Save it for the lures!  ;)

I bought a gallon jug of liquid snow plow wax. I use a small pump up pesticide sprayer to apply it on my otter sled and my portable base. I put it on the sleds before each of the 34,35 trips last season and I still have a 1/2 gallon left.

Just starting my mods on my new glide lite. I am downgrading from a mod'd jet sled. Just started by mocking a power auger setup I saw somewhere. I flipped my auger to put the head in the front however. Will keep updating pics til the finished product. Top bucket locks the Auger in place and will be removed for normal seating, and added if I go mobile with the bucket as Im fairly tall.

I get my sleds out for deer season.  I drag my deer out of the woods with them.

Whitetail deer. The younger ones are great for chops and steaks, and the older larger ones go into venison sausage, all of which go on to the barbecue grill while fishing.

My pleasure.  At one point in time all I was eating was venison, no beef, and I went out to dinner with my then girlfriend and had a piece of prime rib.  It was disgusting.   I had gotten so used to venison that the beef was bitter and gamey.   Venison is not only good, but good for you.

Last year I got a bear.  Tastes a little like pork.  That was a nice mod to the jet sled too!

Ok, I've posted my sled on the forum before, but not in this thread. Mine isn't exactly modified, it's all custom built. Anyway, I think it applies enough to this thread, so here goes:

It started as just a box, I originally had it on another type of base. Eventually I built skis onto it. It's approx. 24" x 36" if I remember right.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6124%2F1134770638_ioF8m-L.jpg&hash=94d37802dda7f5c4c55c2f945d58b867)

This is what it looks like inside- although it usually isn't packed like this. The tip-ups are usually in a duffle type bag and the hand auger is in another bag. The bait bucket is in it's own compartment and if it spills some water it's got drain holes.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6125%2F1134770693_SHW5Q-L.jpg&hash=586f0ded973b928b588ba64b367f7f79)

So this is what makes it special, I have three 1/4" birch ply panels wrapped in aluminum channel that I strap to the top of the box for transport. When empty, the box with the panels probably weighs 30 lbs or so.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6127%2F1134770804_XzEk4-L.jpg&hash=f4fbfb5f3f199c13e40eaa6ba633254c)

Open one of the top doors and there are embedded "T" nuts and big thumb screws there for the panels to attach to.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6126%2F1134770749_khN6w-L.jpg&hash=90f76d4ef58680682d2bc6835228bbc1)

They attach like this:
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6131%2F1134771065_od2aQ-L.jpg&hash=9d99d0cd9cc527dfbe541c9b66edccf2)

And the top goes on again with some aluminum channel and there you have it- solo shelter:
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6140%2F1134792790_tdcFq-L.jpg&hash=137bdf1a91cc4a75c1cd519ffbd034b6)

The whole thing goes together with 4 cotter pins like these (this is the top):
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6133%2F1134770253_PDdFf-L.jpg&hash=3b0f8b64657bdc082a29b561a0447d93)

Here is what the bottom pins look like and this shows the miles of aluminum angle and channel I used. I'm too embaressed to say how much money I spent on this sled.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6134%2F1134770310_i7nvE-L.jpg&hash=9bf788a8e408a6c6d6f4bf9dca46a4b9)

All you do it pull the two bottom pins and the whole top pivots back onto the ice if you need to access the front compartment (which acts as the seat):
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geofftaylorphoto.com%2FOther%2FFishing-Sled%2FIMG6138%2F1134770533_mtm9a-L.jpg&hash=5b6ce599e2bffdaffbe9e0229559a405)

If you see it on the ice, come by and say hi!

Here is what I am thinking of doing with my jet sled XL. I am sure we have all googled build your own shanty plans and have seen the tarp sided Oregon trail chuck wagon looking shanty. I think I can mod my jet sled with a similar premise. Due to extreme boredom at work I am drawing up plans now for this. I will post some pics when I break ground on this project. ...anyone tried this before?

Both. I originally designed it to be pulled by hand, but I do have a snowmobile. When I use it behind the sled, it's attached with a rigid tow bar. My sled is a somewhat of a high performance, liquid cooled trail machine which is prone to overheat in very cold or low snow conditions, so if there isn't much loose snow I hoof it. The 1x6's have a 1/4" aluminum flat stock on the bottom of the ski and it pulls like glass over glare ice or hard pack. I could put 150 lbs on it and pull it with my pinky finger. If there is a lot of snow, I have another sled that goes under it, which is made out of a 2'x3' piece of custom bent aluminum flat stock. I'll take pics of that sometime soon.

That's funny! Now his face is buried in it! Great looking dogs. I have a Lab, but my cousin has a South African Borebol (might have spelled that wrong?), so I appreciate the Mastiffs. His is 170 lbs and such a baby it's incredible.

After I took that photo, I went inside to clean up and the big Guy followed.  Suddenly he started to bark and run to the window.  I ran after him to find the UPS kid standing in my driveway with a box in his hand ghost white and trembling, with the pup growling and barking at him.  I looked at the pup and he had really gotten into the deer and was COVERED in blood.  Oh what must have been running through that kids mind after seeing a blood soaked dog come at him!   Hahahaha.  He did seem to drive away kind of quickly.

I have recieved a lot of compliments on my old jet sled that I mod'd. Here are a couple plctures, (not great pictures) to give an idea. 2 Main compartments, 1 meant to hold my Ice Cube, and 1 for Everything else. Removable boat Seat/Swivel on Top as well as where my gas auger goes with Bungee Tie downs. I am ready this season with my mod'd Glide lite since I run n gun 95% of the time.

I've sprayed silicon onto mine and it does help, but it doesn't last long.  Especially if you hit gravel or rocks.  Ive thought about smoothing mine out with a heat gun to take out some of the scratches, but its never been really high on my priority list.  I do that to my kayak every year to cut down on the drag.
For the sled, I just can't see it being worth the time.

i would have got some electriclal conduit and bent it like a tow bar and made a few brackets or got something that i could have bolted the conduit to, the threaded rod i wouldnt trust its a good start but its just going to flex and that handle might be a little rough on your hands and i wouldnt like not being able to fold that handle up and out of the way. just my opinion but looks like a good start.

I would just use three slots of the bar. Double nut the rods in the outer two and put an "I" bolt in the center. The snowmobile should have a pin hitch on it that can go through the "I" bolt and pivot.

I wanted to make a sled out of conduit but i have heard that the runners on the ice will freeze up with slush and water and create a huge glob of ice on them. Anyone had this problem?

I was thinking somewhere along that line myself, but I want to put some sort of spring in the middle for torque reasons. So the whole bracket doesn't come undone at the wrong time...

I said the heck with the other setup.I went ahead with a different approach, used a couple brackets from the garage and went with 3/4 inch conduit.Easier to fold away and not finished yet...

Looks much more durable. Good job.

that looks much much better! do u have access to a welder? i would weld or make a plate to bolt onto the two that you would make a handle for or attatch a big carabiner then put a plate on the machine to hook the clip to

Heck of a job on your own fabrication skills!Definatly can use the pull cord idea.Unfortunatley these are not my machines,so no drillin.
Was thinkin about a semisquare w/open end attached to the ski with a shear pin of some sort. The other end flush with the tow bar.Still in the "build" mode, season is almost here...

John ,I have friends that built them but it really depends on where you are at.In the midwest taller is better,as there is no surface coverage w/conduit=lots of dig
If you live in the snowbelt region you might want to stay away from that idea,my 2 pennies.

Jaron,
I've been using the conduit runners on my Yukon all last year since we had the most snow that I'd seen in these parts in my 10 yrs living here. The runners cut through the snow like a horse drawn sleigh. With 14 inches of clearance, it always pulled easier than without, usually many times easier with the exception of pavement and dirt.  That's why I made them removable.  The Hi-fax runners work well then.  In regards to slush, they still work better than the sled alone, especially if your wax the entire pipe, top and bottom.  The real problem is when it cools off enough that the slush wants to freeze, but it's still worse on a sled with a 100 lbs of gear.  The hard ski wax helps.
Mine aren't the prettiest since I just bent them around a tree instead of finding a pipebender, but they're close enough that they track pretty well and they're worth the little effort to install and remove when needed.

Another method is to find a longer steel runner sled, the old fashioned flexible flyer style.  One of my buddies uses one tricked out with custom fabric sides with grommets and straps.  It works well in snow up to 6 in.  I bet a smaller flip-over could strap on nicely.

This year I bought an Eskimo Fatfish and a smaller otter sled.  I'd always wanted to build a Smitty sled so I did, with 8 in of clearance and wide enough to strap the otter, pwr auger and pop-up on either side.  But I haven't been able to try it out yet.  That's my experience, hope it helps.

I mounted Rubbermade Fast Track Rails on each side of my jet sled. They come in 4 ft lengths, and the sled is 4 ft. The rubbermade hooks install and remove with ease, so that I can remove for transport. It is awesome to have my auger and shelter out of the sled, so I have organized gear. Thanks for the ski idea smitty! I have to have the sled elevated so that the auger can ride on the side.

With phase one complete, I need to come up with a way to carry the auger, and add some rod holders. I'll load it up at some point, and post another pic for your review.   ed

XJMA I made everything from scratch basically ,the actual brackets (on the sled) are spare parts from an overhead garage door(found 'em on the job) everything else basically cost me around 17.00.Sure beats a 50 dollar universal. Here's the finished tow bar. This is going to wrap around the rear grab handle and hopefully not jackknife if something happens.

That is one nice job.   I really like the fact that you integrated the lantern into the box. Everything seems to have its place on hangers inside the box. Very nicely thought out.

What are the slits in the wood for toward the front of the box into the lantern compartment?  Did you put anything in with the lantern to steady it as your pulling so it doesn't tip and break the mantels?

Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: hounds on Jan 22, 2012, 11:11 PM
First of all guys I did not make this one, a friend did.  The slits in the front are so that heat can pass under the seat into the storage compartment also.  There is a Cut out in an extra piece of board to steady the Lantern The top flips down on hinges and has a mesh just above the lantern, you can warm your hands, soup, coffee, dry your gloves etc.  The neatest part is that the Ski's underneath it are made from Stainless.  The only thing's I can take credit for is adding the foam padding, and adding the hangers on the sides, a couple of cup hooks, and a few magnets in a few spots that hold hemostats, and any small metal objects.   I added the tip down thingamabob to the PVC rod holders he had also.  Got those at Walmart, and took it apart. Almost forgot the front was mesh also but I covered it with glass to push the heat back towards the seat.  Had plenty of time this season to think and dream................. ...................... :)

I had yesterday off, so I brought my Scout indoors so I could drink a few Crowns and 7, while I brainstormed up ideas in what I wanted in the setup. The deck is strong(supports my weight of standing on it without a hint of weakness)and adds so much more ease and function to my outings. It is built out of 1X4"'s and 4 solid steel, beefy brackets. My auger will have a mount on it it tomorrow, once I am able to move it outdoors(carpet glue is still drying). Inside, I put a 1/4" OSB floor w- outdoor carpeting, and then I also carpeted the deck. I added a Berkley tape measure decal to the inside rail, so I can measure fish with ease. I will always have my heater behind the seat where you see it now, the orange box is my tackle, and the playmate cooler is my bait cooler. The camera sits on top of the flasher very solid and safe for using while I set in my shelter, and the modified buckets make using my camera and flasher a breeze. The Frabill directional over head light provides plenty of light, and the frabill hooks work great for hanging my coat or whatever. The orange cord is for clipping my cell phone unto while I stream hard rock into my hut ;D. The skis will make pulling on the lakes and loading the setup in my truck a breeze. The Mag bait trays that you see holding my poles are awesome! I usually just leave it setup in the fishing mode, and drag the shelter around an area as I hole hop. I find fish, I just drag the shelter over a couple of holes, go through the door, and start fishing. I am 6'3' 200 lbs, and I can lock my fingers together, outstretch my elbows, and they don't touch the side walls. This Scout has plenty of elbow room, and NO EXTENSION POLES. Love it!

Started working on my sled mod, not gonna be anything fancy but wanna make it so things are where there supposed to be. I started with a Otter Sport sled i picked up last year. It would be nice if it was a bigger version but i still gotta drag it, dont have a 4 wheeler or a snowmobile to tow it. and the ice we had last year I wouldnt have been stupid enough to try it,  :) I'll keep postin pics as I go.

The last pic gives an idea how its gonna used for storage. I'm gonna make a bracket off the back that I will be able to the power head to the auger on it. I have a Jiffy Pro 4 with a quick release pin so they are easily assembled and takin down on the ice.

Nice.
One thing to remember though- the more room you give yourself the more you will drag out on the ice! After 3 trips out with one I made I went back and downsized.

At home the words " yep that'll fit too" were common.
After a 1 mile trek it became "What the hell was I thinking!"

You will love having lids though, keeps everything nice and dry!

Yes just got them cut out the other night and the bottom the the small compartment finnished just havent gotten the pics uploaded yet. Im not dragging alot out, its not that big of a sled, i just wanted a way to keep everything organized and dry when the weather gets crappy.

Yeah, it is nice to have dry gear, and a place to stash a layer of clothing with out worrying about it getting wet.
I'm a pack rat, and if I had a little crack of space I could usually find a reason to squeeze some other piece of gear into it!
Those days are over now, my teenagers don't go fishing  much anymore. I rather miss those days of "Daddy I got one!"

Yea they grow up and there intrest change, but they usually come back around, been there done that. My youngest is askin to go with me this year again...she wanted to go last year but i wouldnt take her with the lousy ice conditions we had. she loves to fish.

Okay I'm building my 1st smitty sled right now. I want to build an auger rack on it. I have an eskimo stingray s33 8" auger what I want to do is put it on the back horizontally across it. But also over the main part of the sled I'm going to have either my suitcase style sled or when I buy my flip over that will be on there.

Here's a pic of my idea

(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi205.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb98%2Fmichaelo311%2FSledIdea.png&hash=d42233734a2ca82d5c9287d3919c235c)

The Black is the actual sled, red is my shack, green is the auger holder, and white our the buckets. What are people using to hold stuff down with?

I built my auger rack for my smitty sled today. The only thing I don't like are the forks on top of the posts. They are not secured very well. The threads are too coarse to fasten with any nuts. So, for now I just have them screwed into blocks of wood inside the top caps.

I'd be concerned with those emt elbow brackets....they aren't designed for load...would be better off to make a 90 degree bend in the conduit.

i was sitting on the bucket when the sled was loaded to see if it wasn't too high, it didn't break.
hope it won't break on the ice.

I made a hunting blind out of conduit one time and used emt elbows....they couldn't take the flex while traveling and failed by stress fracture...also the set screws didn't hold well either...and all I hung off of it was grass mats.  Was just a caution for you is all. Still like the design.

I decided to go for the conduit build and put it together last night. I used foot flanges to tie the skies on which worked very well. I also put about 40# on it before seeing a slight bend develop but it held fine.
Since I will be hauling alot more than 40# I will be swapping the conduit out for 1/2" black pipe most likely, since the cast foot flanges are designed for that pipe.

I am very happy with the way it is turning out and look forward to getting it out on a test run this year.

I don't know how to load photos here but I built something very similar but I used pieces from an aluminum walker that disabled people use.  I bought 2 of them at goodwill or someplace like that and paid about $1 each.  My buddy welds aluminum and he rigged it up pretty quick.  I used a piece of flat aluminum attached to the ski and he welded the round aluminum to that.  I had to file the aluminum some at the bottom as the ski has some angle to it at the front.  I used some JB weld to attach the pole to the flat piece temporarilly till he welded it so I could get the right 90 degree angles.  The cross braces were made the same way and I had to use a half round file to get a tight fit where the horizontal and vertical joints are.  It's lasted 3 years now, is very light and it was cheap.

I had used PVC before that and it lasted several years but eventually the cold temps caused it to break.

Yup... Mine are 10". I will be taking tools with me the first time out and if it needs to be chopped I will be able to do that pretty easy at that time. I was concerned with deeper powder to be honest. Thats why I left them long

OK after taking a break from my sled, not my choice, I finally finished it this past weekend and new years eve. Nothing fancy but the stuff will stay dry and organised

Wileyc3,
Nice looking sled. But where do you keep your rods? I don't see a place for them.

Right now there in a rod case beside the auger bit, bad camera angle, but once i get a few things around I'm gonna suspend them from the lid over the auger. There is empty room towards the front for the reels and I was trying a way to attach pieces of 1.25 pipe or tubing along the length of the lid over to slide the rods in and the support the end with the reels so they dont get damaged by anyting I might have in that compartment. That's why I have that lid folding out like I do.

You could use industrial 2" wide Velcro. It sticks on tight to painted wood.

i have a question. i just picked up some 6 ft skies cheap for  15 bucks. is that to long to use on my sled. or should i make them shorter...bill
it depends on your storage and transportation limits. i like them LONG! when the ice is without snow just stand on the backs of the skis and kick off with 1 foot, it will glide far and easy!   just wear cleats and youll get there fast if your a walker like i am...

Can't wait to see the finished product.

OK.

Well yesterday ATG Jr and I procured all the materials and today, we did the build.  When  I say "we" I really mean FliknDip did the build and I stood around trying to keep my 3 yr old entertained.  Flik was amazing.  He works with wood so well, it was great to just watch him do his thing.  At the end of the day, the basic box is made from 1/4" Luan, top is 1/2" plywood, 2x4 ski mounts and all of that covered in West Marine 105 Resin for structural strength, waterproofing and gloss.  I think it is coming out amazing.  Far better than I could have hoped for.  Flik and his Dad were so generous not only to let me come over to their shop, but to bascially build this thing for me.  Thank you soooo, much.

I use my Jet Sled as my run-n-gun and nice day outside setup or when I am fishing alone.  Today I  added a couple of features to my Jet Sled, which is an older model that includes the seat so you could stand it up and sit inside of it and get out of the wind.
I liked the idea of adding rod holders, but did not want them permanently mounted, so I rigged up some magnets and fender washers.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1134.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm605%2FOtto61%2FIMG_20130126_105338_716.jpg&hash=cac6ca3532e37605a22992f31ddcd32d)

I also found these magnetic paddle holders meant for ping pong tables at Dick's Sporting Goods the other day.  The rubber on them is as nice as any auger or gun holder I've found, and much cheaper ($10 for the pair)  The magnets were not strong enough to stay in place when removing the auger, so I did screw these in.  I ended up using the magnets from these mounts and added them to the side of the rod holder so I could put my needlenose pliers there and keep them in the same and easily accessible place.

So, the sled is done, more or less.  I have to add a couple of latches and am sure will tinker a bit, but she is very fishable.

thanks for all your help Flik and the others here.  Such wonderful ideas.  The only one I can say I think is an original ATG, is the 1/4" plywood with the 1 3/4" holes cut our for gulp jars and the like.  It slides on a little shelf spanning both the front and rear walls.

Hey Baitbucket-How did you determine the length of your AWESOME auger holder. I figure I can always curt it shorter easier than I can add to it. You should think about patenting your idea  and selling them on eBay. I saw some mods on this site for a "cooking unit/tray" that attaches to a  Mr. Heater.  Guess where I saw basically the same thing being sold???? You won't see me stealing your idea and trying to make money off of it, but someone else with no, scruples might try.  You deserve the credit as well as any compensation involved.
Sorry, I see something I think is wrong and I have to vent. Your idea will be saving me and a lot of other fisherman a lot of headaches. Just hope you benefit from sharing your idea, financially or otherwise.

The height is pretty much trial and error.
Cut your notches, push the tube into the connector and screw it into the lid fastened to the tub.
Place your auger on it and see how much clearance you have from the poles/pole bracket. Those are what will limit your height.
I just kept cutting a little bit off at a time till my auger barely cleared the pole. You can actually have one shorter than the other as well. I leave them the same length so i dont have to worry about whats what tho.
The shorter the better, its more stable.

You can put them on your boxes too. I mounted one to mine:

There is about a 1/2in space between the rubber piece and the wood.

I went out and fished this afternoon and let me tell you the auger holder is really slick.  Hoping holes jigging I just left the holders in place, they weren't in the way.  The one actually made a nice little arm rest for my jigging arm.  (Maybe a comfy little arm rest pad that slips in the top?)  Hmm, got battery to mount as well now.   :)  3 teeny tiny perch this afternoon in the snow and wind.

Fuzzy,
They make caps that you can buy that are not threaded. Just slip one of those over the top. Should pop on and off easy with the notches there. Then fabricate a small pad that you can glue to the top of that for a nice padded arm rest. Or maybe just a rubber 2in cap might be padded enough for an arm rest as well.

Like these:

Wouldnt need the clamp on this. Just take it off.
(https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi247.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg121%2Fwillcooper4%2Fcap1_zpsaf51be52.jpg&hash=1b1bb63e5aa4b43b4a1627659f0ecd77)

Add a pad to the top of this, and slip it over the top of the holder.

I would use the rubber cap.

The pvc ones tend to get stuck on a piece of pipe even with out glue.

You could make a pad for the rubber one and bolt it on using fender washers on both sides of the rubber.

With the slots the plastic will pop off pretty easy.

Also, you guys with the decks like fuzzys got, you could mount the holders the long way from front to back in the middle of the sled.
Just bolt the cups to the deck,  or bolt one to the middle of the lip they are currently on, and one on the back of the deck, if it can hold the auger weight.

Could probably get it alot lower since there are no bars in the way.

Wish I could take credit, but the rig you mention was thought up and built by BaitBucket. I was just letting him know I appreciated  him sharing his plans and ideas with everyone, as well as how Boss his ION auger looked.
As for your ATV, I also have one (Honda Rubicon) I use to haul my gear. Upon advice I read here, I went to Wally World and purchased an ATV gun rack for $19.95. I already know from past experience that if someone can build something for $10, I will double or triple the amount trying to do it myself. (I used to have a shirt that read, "I'm mechanically inclined, I can screw up anything".)  That being said, if you are good with tools, I bet you can build a doable auger carrier, I just took the easy way out. I guess I have had too much time on my hands this winter. Decided my sled was a little to short for me. So I have made up a new one. Just waiting for the fabric to show up.(it's at the post office as I speak.) Here is the mock up of the new sled. The tub is something I made several years ago. Was real noisy being made out of aluminum. I put 3/4" pipe runners under it this time. Pulls real easy also.

Always looking for a place to put my... Coffee, jigs, light, food, etc.. In the corner where my bracket it was just the right size to put my Stanley cup and can always use more room. Easy and didn't cost a thing. A piece of 1x10 laying around and a jig saw.

Took it down stairs and drilled the board where the bolt head impression is. Keeps it from moving around and gives you all the room you need for more crap. The other thing that really keep it in place is bolt nut on the bracket. Worked great today.

Just finished the new sled. Waiting for it's maiden voyage.
Dimensions are 31 wide, 50 long, 15" high when folded flat. Erected it is 31" wide 86" long and 60" tall. Has alot more room inside for me and storage than the old one.
The old may be able if anyone is interested. Scroll up the page to see the camo sled. Page 11.  Perfect for running and gunning the perch.

Well....I am going to be more organized this year, so I made this center console for my fish trap, will fit nicely between the 2 seats, or if I take a seat out it will slide over and still will be beside me,  made from 7/8" white oak, hardboard on bottom, 9 1/2" wide,  2 cup holders, and four other compartments to put what-ever in. A cleat on each end holds it secure over each edge of tub. Give me your thoughts. Thanks Smitty.

I'm curious as to how guys are attaching their sleds to the ski rigs I see here.  I have a medium Otter sport sled and am looking to do the same thing but I want to avoid drilling any holes into the thing where the skis can't be removed rather quickly.  The sled gets used extensively in the spring hauling around maple sap and in years when there isn't snow at that time having the flat bottom is going to work out better than getting skis tangled in brush.  Sometimes we have to go through some wet areas and the thought of having a sled take on water with a couple of milk cans filled with sap is not my idea of fun.  I've seen contraptions guys have made where their sled is basically cradled which is the direction I am heading but I have questions about how it is clamped together so the sled doesn't go sliding off.  Actually...I have a concept in mind that should do the trick but still want to see the handiwork of stuff that has already been done.

I'm in the process of building what I call an "electronics station" for my ice fishing repertoire.  I run my electronics (older Aqua-Vu, FL8) off of one of those jump starter battery packs.  The reason for doing so is that I wired them up with 12v plugs so that I can simply plug into the outlets I have on my boat.  It also serves as a phone charger/fan power source/light power source etc. so that I can eliminate having to charge 9 different things all at once when I'm back on land.  Charge one thing up and you're done.  Anyway....

The idea with this set up is to build a "platform" that sits crossways on the sled.  The Aqua-Vu and flasher (upgrading to an LX7 at the end of this year) will sit on each end with a storage area in the center.  From there I can lift that right out of the sled and put it into my portable which is a pop-up.  This will basically give me a "dashboard" of sorts that sits a little bit off of the ice and is more stable than resting these units on buckets.  The height of the platform will be the same as the height of the decks in my boat and the length will be such that it will fit snugly so that everything is level.  I might put the LX7 on the bow...not sure yet.  Have to figure out what type of interference issues I'll have with the units I have on the boat already.  Two sonar/GPS combo units, a stand alone GPS unit, and an LX7.  Overkill?  Probably but electronic toys are neat.

Sorry for the long winded question/post but I wanted to give a bit of background of what other stuff I'm working around.  I typically only use a hand auger, carry 4-5 jig poles, and about 15-20 tip-ups.  Gotta have back-ups.

@ 32footsteps
I use the Otter Sport medium as well, and like you, I didn't want holes drilled in it either.
I built a frame out of PVC that the tub sits in and the loaded weight locks it in place.

Here is my drawing plan, you might double check my measurements before cutting.
Also is the picture of the finished product.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Joe Wayne,

Thanks...that's what I was looking for.  I might make it out of wood instead of PVC using that same basic concept.  I'd like to mount some LED's or a RAM mount on the frame for those times when I'm walking on or off in the dark.  I took a pair of those small halogen auto lights you can get at Wal-Mart and mounted them onto a RAM plate so I can simply clamp them onto a ball that is mounted on my boat.  It's wired up to a 12v plug and works wonders muskie fishing at night having that shining down into the net when unhooking a fish.  Having the entire net lit up has saved a few hooked fingers.  Could use the same idea on the ice....clamp it on the sled frame, plug it into a battery pack, and you'll have good light for setting up/taking down a portable and as "headlights" on the sled when you walk on or off.

I got to tinkering around today and made some modifications to my Commando to resolve some things that drove me batty.

Made a platform to get my heater off the ice and behind me. I'm hoping this will help alleviate the tank freezing problem by getting it in warmer air. In any case, it's out of my way and I don't have to carry anything to put it on. Tested it in my unheated garage at 9 degrees and it worked great.

Then, as long as I was at it, I added some bungies at the corners and sides to control the fabric. It was always in the way.

Well I was still at it so I decided to put the Frabill seat back in. I took out in lieu of a folding camp chair. I decided to replace the heavy steel plate and swivel base that's OEM with a Swivel Ease base. Had to reposition the rear support. Not much of a problem. and dropped about 4 lbs.

There was still some day left so I completed a cover that I've wanted to make since I modified the bottom rails some years ago. So I made a run to Wally World, picked up a nylon wind panel for one of those pop up gazebo things and started working it up. Dug out the sewing machine and played canvas maker. Came out OK too ;D

Looks real good RG. I am thinking about making a different Smitty soon. Made a couple of tip downs the last two days. Was going fishing today but found other things that needed done first.

The heater worked like a charm. It was 15 or so with 25 mph winds. The tank didn't freeze and the heater was easily in reach while out of the way of fishing. Cover, seat and bungies did their jobs. Smitty's sled made pulling all that stuff out on the ice a whole lot easier.

I was happy across the board. Time well spent ;D

Hope someone else can make use of some of the ideas.

I bought a set of the Beaver Dam Tip Up brackets for mounting to the outside of my bucket.  They made the bucket really side heavy of course since I didn't put a set on each side.  I decided I would mount them into my sled instead.  The side of my sled was just a little short, so I had to cut a piece of 1/4" to mount in between the holders and the sled.  I think it turned out pretty well.  It eliminates one bucket I have to carry with me.

glide lite sled removable wind break. just something to put up on days when the wind is real bad. pvc couplers stay attatched to sled, folds up and fits in sled under the bucket. sticks out a bit but not in the way of pulling the sled. made it so i can use the wider sides to sit and have the length of the sled to offer the most protection from the wind. tarp is 5 by 7 and had to cut some to fit right cost about 50 dollars in material. still planning on doing more.....

Looks good. Look like the old Frabill Sled that had the Wind break built in. Just used some Clamps on the sides huh?
Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: pimple pounder on Feb 21, 2014, 07:47 AM
I attached couplers on the front and couplers and small length of pipe on the back that stay attached to the sled. tarp is mounted to the PVC pipe frame and when you want to put it up just slide the pipe frame into each coupler, i have one small bungee on the back to keep wind from blowing under it and i added a piece across the back on the inside to keep it tight. this is fixed on one side and swivels up and locks on a small screw head. did this to make everything fold up thin to slide into sled for transportation. really liked the frabill sled but couldn't find one so i made this.

Morning rt dak,

Awesome design you made. Great idea and design for your bait bucket.  Even if it was made for a extra shelf space. ( with out the hole) A dry place to put your tackle box, coffee cup, extra hooks, Etc, Etc.

Excellent how it folds out and back in, out of the way.

Have a great Ice Fishing season.
  Stay Safe.

Cheers.

hey Doc, how'd this work out? was it tippy?

RD I sent ya a PM, but for anyone else interested, it wasnt the greatest as it was a little top heavy in deep snow, however, I added small skis like I had seen in another post and the little bit of extra length sure helped out with stability. I put 2 Metal C Clips mounted to the sled that the handles pulled into (in same configuration), so it didnt slide off the top from rocking back and forth.

I havent used glide lite in last year and a half as I was doing a lot more either bucket fishing or using my diy eskimo shanty. I need to get it out and start using it again, as It was very nice to get a large amount of gear on the lake without carrying it. It works really well until 6" of snow or more, then it seemed to be tipsy......nothing beats it on glass ice or up to 2 inches, hard to tell it is even back there.

Hey Sherlock,

I like that rod holder idea, I see it mounted on the sled. does it screw into the ice as well? I think I am going to try something like that.
Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: Johnsonarcher on Jan 21, 2015, 12:55 PM
I just finished doing some mods to my sled again.

I made a three piece flat top with hinged doors on each side. I made one side a little larger that the other. On the small side I can fit my two chairs, my collapsible table, my shovel and my scoops. On the larger side I can fit my flasher, my heater, my tackle box and other random stuff.

I put a rod rack on the back enough to hold 8 rods. I plan on changing it though to a removable rack so I can just unhook it and bring it into the shelter with me. Right now I have a separate little pvc rack I bring in.

I put in a battery box and wired switches out to the rear corner. I only have one switch hooked up so far. I used some LED strip lights to wrap around the front of the sled. They are controlled by the switch. They put out a lot of light for walking out in the morning and getting set up. The 3M tape on the back of the strips didn't work so well so I used small zip ties every few inches to hold them on. I got a 5 meter roll of the LED strip lights off Ebay for like $9. I used about 3 feet so far. I plan on putting some on the rear of the sled as well. I would also like to put some on the inside incase I would need any light for unpacking.

When everything is packed I just put the auger on top. I carry the hub shelter by the shoulder straps.

Thanks for looking.

Very cool! Keep an eye on those toggle switches though. They stick out quite a ways and wouldn't be hard to catch on something when moving your sled around. Possibly swap out with some lower profile rocker switches if that happens?

I was worried when I first bought them, I wanted rockers original. They are still inside the shade of the sled tub edge by quite a bit though.

The green and orange ones are Cabelas noodle type rods. One is a St. Croix, and I'm not sure what the dead stick setups are.

Hey Sherlock,

I like that rod holder idea, I see it mounted on the sled. does it screw into the ice as well? I think I am going to try something like that.

DSP2 -

They don't screw into the ice, but that's a great idea. Mine are smooth and just slide into drilled holes along the rail.

After reading this thread a couple of times I was inspired to create my very own "Modified Sled", so to everyone that has posted thanks for the inspiration!!!

I have the Clam Base Camp hub shelter and my sled fits perfectly inside with plenty of room to fish. I wanted a way to be able to keep my gear/toys all together, all organized and all within reach. I was also in search of a bench of sorts so my two boys 6 & 7 yrs old always had a solid place to sit, and that I could also use to stow my gear and this is what I came up with! I also use a underwater camera frequently mostly just to keep the boys busy, but I will admit it comes in handy at times.

There is room on the open side for my shelter and hand auger. The locker holds my finder, rod holders, tackle, bucket seats, extra gloves, snacks and anything else that fits. The center console holds my underwater camera (a must have with the boys) and toggle switches to turn on front lights for fishing and a back light to just brighten things up.

Building this drove my wife nuts lol!, so thanks to everyone for the inspiration and thanks especially to my wife for not killing me! Let me know what you think, I already have a few more mods in mind!!!

That's a really cool set up you got fish4all! I haven't seen a camera and cord set up like that yet, with the lid open and holding the camera cord.

One possible suggestion would be to put a coat or two of paint on your wood. If you throw wet things or anything with snow on it in there when packing up, it'll eventually wreak havoc on that particle board. Otherwise, it looks very nice and functional!

Thanks Ice_Addict for the suggestion, I am going to take your advise and do just that! Also plan on adding a couple rod holders, and probably another battery with a USB port and cigarette lighter to keep devices charged! The longer the boys are happy, the longer I can fish lol!!!

First off, please excuse the mess in the background. It was a flurry of parts, tools and sawdust throwing this thing together.
Here is my new "Modular" sled. The black side panels, front bait bucket and back tray/rod holder is removable with one thumb screw one each sidewall of the sled, for example If I want to fish, say a 2 line limit lake (here in NH) when I will be only jigging, I can take my tipup panel off for the day quickly. also all of the panels can be removed and stored inside the "tub" of the sled.
I started with a large inventory tote from a manufacturer that recently went out of business. From there I fabricated the brackets and "lift kit" from aluminum, laid thin sheet steel under the belly and rolled it up front, and the rest is repurposed materials I had left over in my shop (1/2" plywood, pvc, hardware, latches and hinges, etc). It drags super slick. The tray on back fits my clam shell tackle boxes so they are at the ready when I need to change up lures quickly. EVERYTHING I need is in one container now. No more digging through multiple bags, bins and Milk crates to find what I need, no more' "Damnitt, I left that back in my other bag!" I utilized the Frabill bucket insert to use as a bait container (cuz I dont really NEED to carry around a 5 gal. bucket for 2 doz minnows, eh?
Oh, and the HT bucket clamp-on rod holder was modified to screw (with the 1/4-20 t-nut insert in the cover) onto  the cover of the sled, and can still be adjusted to any angle, and holds solid too. This was a project I am proud of, (and happy to see done, cuz I had WAAAAY too much time onto it lol)
Anyway, enjoy...

My guess would be less space used to haul it back and forth to the lake, looks like it could be hooked up to a 4 wheeler or a snowmobile and space may be at a premium, so make the best of what he had available...... just an idea.

another guess could be that the sled caused to much resistance at 2 long when pulled with two people on a 2 up.. so he went two high?

Good point. I noticed mine pulled noticeably harder when I pulled my buddies sled behind mine. I suppose even having extra weight pulling "one" is still easier than pulling two in series. Hadn't thought of that before. I was thinking about how it could be top heavy though if he ever pulls it on uneven terrain. Might not be an issue though. Most places I pull mine are very flat, but it sounds like some guys are trekking miles through back trails with some pretty rough terrain.

Whatever reason he did it, I hope it works. It's a cool idea!

We had a plastic pallet laying around so we built on top of it and plus we put our 2 up in the trailer and the box in the truck bed. It works pretty well, and you can cook in it when it's windy.

I made my own sled out of an old pair of skis.  Hope it works lol. We haven't had a good cold front come through where I live yet, so it will be a while until I can get it out on the ice. It holds my old tote from my deployments and my clam six pack thermal hub pretty well. All of my gadgets go in the tote and I ended up screwing a bucket to the sled as well.

Has anyone made a runner kit using lexan or hdpe. I bought the Clam runner kit but do not like where they place the bolts in the sled. They drill thru the seam (peak) which I think is a bad spot. Plus they recommend drilling several holes.

they have you drill them on the peak so the nuts on bottom side are recessed below peaks on inside of sled.

Well this year we don't have much snow, but it can very year to year. I'm thinking of adding some small diameter tubing to the bottom to help slide easier and protect the plastic sled on the rough frozen dirt. And usually I just fish the local farm ponds or maybe a local small lake.

Yes I have thought about building a Smitty sled. I'm just not sure it would hold all of our gear. All the stuff you see in the picture is both mine and my brother in laws.
Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: Lavman on Jan 29, 2016, 07:37 AM
You would put your sled of gear on top of the Smitty. I think your mod is great, it is a tad heavy I am sure. A Smitty would make it much easier to pull with any amount of snow. If you have glare ice conditions you are golden, the loaded sled with no Smitty will pull effortlessly.

In Lou of the weather this winter, I Spent the first part of the season tricking out the Yoyager. Wanted a place to keep rods secure and safe from stuff sliding around in the tub, but still be able to access them easily while fishing... Well, I took it to the next level and built a deck (more or less, it does hold me up come to think of it) like a bass boat style rod locker. Just need a trolling motor mount for it now lol

So some how I've forgotten my old password and the email to reset never makes it to my email. So with that being said, this sled will look familiar, that's why.
So we took it out late last year, no snow left and by afternoon even the frozen mud was starting to stick to our boots. I know alot of you say use the Smitty sled, my question is, would it really made that much difference? We left the hub and heaters at home that day, so it wasn't even full. I'm thinking maybe mount the skis themselves to the bottom of my sled.

Skis will make that beast pull like a dream. I bet it's pretty miserable to drag right now with that load
Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: rdhammah on Aug 15, 2016, 09:45 AM
the idea of the skiis is to get the load off the snow. got to get the sled off the snow.

My second question is how much abuse can the ski's take? Frozen cattle fields aren't the smoothest, even with snow.
Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: boss j on Aug 20, 2016, 01:34 PM
my skis drag over rocks and trees with ease and never had a problem with them. I do suggest to put at lest 2-3 inch blocks between the skis and sled this way as the skis sink into the snow the sled still doesn't touch the snow to cause drag. its avoiding the friction of the snow on the sled that makes it so much easier to pull.

Title: Re: --- SLED MODS ---
Post by: Uncle Al on Sep 01, 2016, 03:34 PM
snow ski's are made for snow, they're narrow and tough. I pull a windbreak with all my gear on a smitty down a truck tire rutted 1/4 mile road through cat tails to get where the ice starts and am thankful that I built the smitty. I pulled the box once when it had 2x4 runners on it, and after that I built the smitty, I used 2x10's for the spacers between the box and the ski's, and ran 3in deck screws from the bottom of the skis to the spacer. I have another smitty that I put 1/2in plywood over the spacers and carry a clamshell shanty and gear on that. They all work well, you'll be glad that you made one.

they might work but the whole point of the smitty is to minimize the drag by having less contact with the snow. waterskis will for sure drag harder than downhill skis.

As to water skis or snow skis. My short experiments so far. Seem to fly in the face of logic. On slick ice no big difference obviously anything will pull on bare ice. But in the brief snow we had here in Ohio. Identical sled ( Jetsled ). Installed snow skis first loaded modestly and towed around in back yard worked ok . Removed snow skis and installed water skis.

The water skis did not sink as deeply in the snow as the snow skis. Could see the difference with naked eye without having to measure.
The towing effort was less with the water skis. Not drastic but noticeable.

It  convinced me to use the water skis on both of my sleds. One with jetsled for run and gun fishing light load. The other a heavier Otter sled when pop up shelter is going to be needed . Resulting in heavier load.

Next experiment is to try the push option as suggested by several icers. Mounting water skis a little more rearward. And pushing along kinda like using like the scooters kids used to use. Seen on a video here . Guy said he could scoot along about 8-10MPH. Which would be great in Ohio as we are not allowed motor vehicles of any type on the ice.

try your experiment from the back yard on dry pavement, some day you will encounter dry pavement in a parking lot and have to pull your sled to the ice. You might change your mind.

I leave most of that stuff on the shelves at the store. I don't use a power auger, BBQ, heater, and I rarely bring food. I'd rather fish than haul a bunch of gear. But if that makes fishing more enjoyable for you, go for it!

Built everything so I don't have to pick anything up when I'm ready to move. Just have to stand up and pull. Put the tip down style holder on front for a 2nd line in the water and have a couple deck screws I can run through the skis with my drill for anchors if I need to hold it down. Radio can be swapped out for the heater if needed and the auger fits on with the wind screen but I forgot to put it back for the pics.

In case you didn't know.....all past pictures posted thru Photobucket have been deleted by Photobucket.  If one wants to continue using it for posting pictures, the cost went from free to $400.00 a year.

So do we erase old and start over?  or do we start over finding our posts in the millions of lost pictures?? Which is a big pain in the arse..  to bad there is no way to leave post counts alone etc.. erase all data and start over cause pictures are gone.. it would save the storage space for the form if you know what I mean by that??  and repost what we can after the data is gone..  if you think about it it's posting twice the data and the site is paying store it mainly ice shanty and it's members.. that chip in ..   it up to every one else if they want to do this?? cause I know a picture is worth a thousand words ... is erasing the info even a idea or worth it??

For me, not being able to find a similar site as Photobucket or Picasa (also shut down) that will allow pictures to be downloaded from a camera and then stored for future use is a pretty big deal.  I have heard that places like imgur or shutterbug stores pics but unless I am greatly mistaken they do not have the downloading from a camera capability.  They just store pictures already downloaded from somewhere else.  If I am wrong, perhaps someone who knows how to download pics from a camera (NOT a cell phone camera) from either of those sites could explain how to do so as I am more than a little computer illiterate.

DLB,
Yes, for Imgur you have to move the pictures first to your computer, then you can drag them into Imgur super easy. I just have a folder on my computer desktop labeled Fishing Pictures and I put all my camera pictures there. Then just drag to Imgur. I like this because then it also keeps all my photos on my computer in case something like the Photobucket fiasco happens, I still have them all.

I am using Flickr, seems to be the same kind of features that photobucket had, although the urls to embed links must be modified with something like notepad. I do like that I can choose the image size at the time I am copying the url link, hopefully it sticks around and does not begin charging a fee to use it.

Not much of a mod, but the molded in spots for cargo dividers in the Pelican Sport sleds work well for building a gear organizer.

Ditched the Sled today.  Cut a piece of an old Truck bed liner 35" Wide x 36" long to fit in the back of my New fishing vehicle a 1999 Subaru Outback. It fits in the back and I have an old Rubber maid tote screwed to it that holds my 2 Heavy Swivel chairs and my Buddy Heater Portable in it. Then I have a bucket with Rod holders and other stuff in it and my rod bag,Nero Mini Ridgid Drill and my tent and Smitty sled in there. I did this so I could carry 3 people. Only one side of the rear seat folded down allows my Smitty Sled and tent to go in. I have everything in there except my lunch and bait. The Truck bed liner works so I can strap from back right to front left and Back Left to front Right. It straps where the Liner can't move forward or back nor side to side.  Beats trying to put my old Cabela's sled in the back and having to fold down both back seats.

Older build of mine. Milk crate holds 20lb propane tank for the heater and balances the weight of the pop up. Just upgraded to a big boy auger so I am going to need to redesign a bit to fit everything.

Ultimately plan to put the whole thing on skis, but haven't had time to work on that part.

Nothing major but I did remove the bench seat in my Shappell fx50 and replaced it with one of those 3-legged canvas chairs w/backrest:

1) Allows more space for gear when traveling
2) Sits up a little higher and more comfortable
3) I do a lot of hole hopping so don't sit much anyway...just a rest now and then.

No. Near the same weight as the chair I would guess. It's one of those small ones with the triangle seats.

No pics yet but in the process of a few mods of FX 50 windbreak:

1) Moved the bench from the front to the rear for a shelf...perfect for heater.

2) Placed small triangle canvas chair where bench was, off-set to one side. Sitting further into shanty for added protection from elements.

3) Put shanty cover over top to help retain heat.

4) Used chair carry bag for drill/auger...fits nicely inside shack

5) Plenty of room for bucket w/ poles "attached" and locator.

6) Everything incl. shanty still less than 60#

7) Smitty Sled complete in about a week.

The shelf (bench seat) is attached 5" from back of tub putting front edge 1' from back of chair and 1.5" below top edge of tub. I used 1X2" cedar boards as "mounts" for shelf using 1.5" #10 machine screws to secure. Space enough around the area of shelf to place heater so as not to come in contact with anything. I won't put it directly behind chair though  :o I like this "3/4" shanty because it is light and don't really like to be closed up tight. Not because of claustrophobia or anything...just like to look outside.

Nice, I might do that to mine. I took it with me today but never took it out of the car. I found 4" of ice but forgot my Cleats and it was a clear ice day no snow on top. I did drill 2 holes to verify the thickness. I also found 2" on another lake also. I should be on the ice next week sometime.

It is very sturdy in the up position but i wouldlnt recommend sitting on it while raised. I havent got to test it much yet so i dont really know how durable it will prove to be over time. Im most worried about how the metal holds up to the elements.

This link was sent to me on IJO. What an awesome idea! Are you concerned about wind coming under the sled with those brackets off the ice a little ways/ have you had a chance to sit in it to see how well the brackets will hold up even with it in the down position?

Thanks!

Its very stable in the down position, doesnt move around at all. As long as there is some snow on the ice the wind shouldnt be able to get under it. Only sits about 1/2 an inch above a flat surface.

I was planning on adding a full length flip-up shelf inside my Eskimo Quick Flip II. I started building it this weekend and it just won't fit. I need about a 15" wide shelf to hold my Eagle Claw hard case and still be able to open the lid so it doesn't fall closed. That 15" killed my idea. Now I'm looking for a way to make a shelf that hangs from the furthest most cross bar(on the back wall when flipped). I just don't like having to reach over my seat and to the floor to get to my rods. But if it were a bit higher it might be easier to get to the case.  Right now I just lay the case on the ice.

Anyone using the coffee table hinges and Skis, I have a question. I went with the hinges that mount on the side of the sled so that when it's lowered the tub sits on the ground.  What are you using to make reinforce the sides of your sled behind the bracket? I was thinking aluminum plates, fender washers, or wood. I want to stay as light as possible but not risk cracking or breaking the tub.

Snitch, Looks good.  Nice and simple but looks like it will be effective.

Thnx, I've been working on it for a couple of years.  Started with the windbreak, then added the milk crate, then the seat and rod holders were added last year.  Thinking about making a conduit frame for the tub to sit on and mount the frame to ski's instead of 2x6.  Hopefully, lose a little weight.  So far I really like it.  I can put the windbreak up and take it down, in less then 5 min.

That's more what I have in mind for a frame under my sled.  I want to lose the wood risers and go to conduit or pipe. I think I can lose some weight by switching over.

You should be able to lighten it up by losing the wood, mines 1" x 1/4" angle iron.

think outside the box, it's not done yet and a little top heavy, can't take corners over 10mph, lol I'm going to add rod holders and some type of foldable outrigger wheels as well as a couple eyelets for bungee or strap use to secure auger or my hub house in the future. I wanted to keep it skinny enough to fit on the back rack of my quad. #35 as it sets with gear.  tubes hold 15 tip ups, enough for me and my 2 boys.  Auger goes on front of my quad along with a empty milk crate with another bucket in it. I have a custom rack attached to the hitch of my quad to hold my schappel 4000 fish house if the weather is going to be that bad.

Y'all have got me thinking. Was dinking around in sketchup and came up with this; may be overbuilt. Would be a fun project, though! Built on a rough model of a Jet Sled (JS1).

That a true relic right there! Looks just like the sled Fred Trost had a few years ago. It's what I based my sled on, just a little wider and taller. Thanks for sharing.

Us old boys caught plenty of fish without flashers. Walked everywhere that we fished and enjoyed every minute of it. Bait for tomorrow was eyes from todays catch, two rods, two hooks, walk out to where you got fish yesterday, kick the hole open with your boot heel, wait for the fish to bite. Lots of fun. Todays a little different everyones got a sled, shanty, heaters, power augers, some of us need them now cause we're old, but we're still going out, and still having fun.

Will see you out there...  Merry Christmas!

In need of a new shanty I was looking at the Eskimo Sierra 2 man flip over but after trying to pick it up in the store, it was way to much weight for my 73 year old back.  Sitting next to it was the Wide One Thermal at 20 pounds lighter and quite a bit less expensive so I brought one home.  I decided not to go hog wild with mods so I kept it simple.  First thing I did was paint the sled white but the so called "plastic adhesive paint" isn't and its peeling already.  A light bar was part of the package so that was installed along with a couple of shelves from an old Clam Scout.  I put a couple of rod holders in each corner using a h'talf of a door hinge for each one..a trick I learned here some time ago.  I was always losing my towel in the sled so I hung one from the ceiling and put a small box under the seat as I didn't care for the net that came with the unit.  Not pictured is an expandable net I've hung from the front ceiling to put my gloves and hat in...more articles I was always losing in the sled.  I had some Refletix (sp) laying around so I put some in the floor just for the heck of it as its very light.  Figured it would help keeping the shanty a little warmer.
