Sportsmans Park @ American Falls
« on: Jan 28, 2012, 04:17 PM »
Hey folks, any info on ice conditions @ sportsmans park? My buddy wants to go there tomorrow but I'm not sure if it's safe or not

THIS IS A REPORT FROM ANOTHER FORUM    Posted today . Curt G.
Talked to a friend that went today. He said it was good. They caught a few perch when i had talked to him and still out fishing. He said that it was hard to hook up, they were just picking at the jig.

He also said that there was someone down from him that had caught a 1.75 lb perch.

Sounds like it is worth the trip to me.

I think the only thing you will find is the earth worms and mill worms in the gas stations.

I can find plenty of meal worms and night crawlers around here, thought they might have something that way for the perch fisherman.

Thanks for the info, I wish the walmart here in Burley carried them.  Sportsmans warehouse in Twin Falls has 3 packs of spikes, but each pack looks like half of them are already dead.  Maybe I will check the walmart in Twin Falls when I go there this afternoon.

I will try there, thanks Reel Trouble.  Walmart in Twin does not carry them, and Sportsmans is out and will not be carrying them anymore according to one of the sales guys.

Bingham COOP store/gas station right in AF usually has them and they have a nice store with food and a good selection of tackle including ice fishing gear.  It is right smack in town

gas station in Aberdeen does carry meal worms and night crawlers. I think the bingham co-op in american falls carries spikes and possibly maggots but most people I've talked to as well as my self have been doing decently on crawlers and meal worms, for me mostly the meal worms. the seem to be small enough for the perch and big enough for the trout

I'll have to remember that, we come from St. Anthony the back way to Aberdeen but usually bring our mealies with us as everyone seems to have them in the upper valley.  We caught a bunch of perch last weekend at sportsmans with mealies, spikes in pink and white, but had very little luck with perch eyes or cut bait (cept for suckers and chubs).  I fooled around with a chubby darter but actually caught many smaller ones on that but did manage a few 9-10"s on it.  In our group we had several pushing 12 and one about 13 but some guy close to us caught an absolute hog

I wonder if those schools of big chubs push the perch and trout out.  The ones you were catching are huge!  They are too big for most trout to eat, so maybe their sheer numbers and size spook the other fish out of the area when they cruise in.  ???  ???    Do you know if everyone was just catching chubs?

I was there on Monday and caught 1 chub and some perch.  most of the perch were small and were released back.  I kept 6 decent size.

Snake river sports was out of maggots too.  I just ordered 1000 multi colored maggots from knutsens.

how was the ice? it worries me that the water level has come up 12% in the last 2 weeks, wont that weaken the ice by puting pressure on it  lifting it?
what did the fish say when he ran into a brick wall?

the ice is talking quite a bit where I've been fishing at, just north of sportsmans park but the air temps have been good this week and most of the week before. had good luck myself this weekend. the edges have a little slush over the ice under it but still holding quite well where I was. ice was mostly about 10-12 inches thick and where soft water was jus a few weeks ago is now about 3-4 inches.
