tree steps !! too hold your shanty in place!!
« on: Feb 09, 2007, 10:04 AM »
you guys know those tree steps they sell for hunting so u can climb into a tree ?
i waunder how well those would work for screwing into the ice beside your shanty to hold your shanty in place!
i was thinking about this because after seeing all these guys talk about how they got pushed all around the lake last week from all the strong winds !!  i thought mmmmmmm as i was going through my hunting and fishing gear and came across the tree steps in my fanny pack thinking this may work??!! ???

That might work it all depends if you can get them to screw in to thhe ice. I wust went to rual king the other day and got a 11in hay hook looks like a big fish gaff . I put a small pice of rope and a climing clip on it to be able to ajust it and then all you have to do is drill a hole about 4 ins deep in to the ice and set it in . it worked great and only cost $7.00  ;)

What I do is drill 2 hole side by side and drop a small rope down the hole and pass it threw the other hole. then tie together with a C clip. I use this method when wind is bad and have never had a problem. I can even leave the shanty over night without worries!!! ??? ???

I use four 12" steel tent stake's . I hammer them into the corners of my shantys floor. It works very good and they are easy to get out.

I bore a hole and place a stick into the hole that I have tied a rope to. Works good and easy to come by - as my Uncle John would say: "Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly." (Think about it.) Boomer

I BENT A PIECE OF 3/8 REBAR INTO A S SHAPE, APPROX. 2 FEET LONG. HOOK 1 END TO YOUR SHANTY WITH AN EYEBOLT OR TO YOUR PULL ROPE THEN DRILL A HOLE FOR THE OTHER END. ITS CHEAP AND STRONG.

I'm setting my pulling loop to my shanty over a pier post when I'm done fishing in my pond. Trouble is if the wind gets strong it tends to want to pick up the pop up and bounce it around with only one pivot point locked into place. Also if the wind shifts it causes problems. Seems to me you need two pivot points in strong wind.

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Bought 4 ice climbing scews from ebay this year.  Paid $55.00 for all 4.  They usually go 50-60 a piece.  Screw into the ice with no effort at all, hold like hell and come out at the end of the day with ease.  I mounted 4 eye bolts to the corners of the shanty and attach the screws to the eye bolts with a carabiner.  The whole kit weighs about 1 lb.  Great investment.

Drill two small holes in the base of your shanty on opposite ends(1/4 or 3/8 in.) and screw the same size eye bolts into the ice.Keeps your shanty "rock solid".
Some men fish real hard but only "real men" fish hardwater!
