Plenty of ice
« on: Mar 27, 2018, 04:57 PM »
I got out on a local pond this afternoon and found thicker ice than I have seen since I started fishing it about 10 years ago. My drill bottomed out on the first hole. After shoveling away the ice chips and trying again I was able to break through. There were a couple holes where that wasn't enough. The Nils hand auger I carry as a backup was long enough to finish those holes. I know conditions can change fast but it's looking like this year might break last year's record for late April ice fishing.

I was out Sunday and Monday and was surprised how good the ice was. Where I was it was at least 20” and the edges were fine!

Still plenty in southern Maine too as long as you’re not right on the coast and avoid moving water areas.  Rode my bike on the ice the last two trips and it worked great, need to get studded tires for next year.

I wouldn’t say safe, but fishable in areas that usually have thicker ice and minimal
current if you’re careful.

With the latest conditions in weather. Its impossible to see thin ice areas, With the coming nights above freezing and more run off water will rise. and the sun hot above and remember water temps are always above freezing. I have pull a few out of slush holes in the past . I might not be around this next time!!!!!
