Moosehead Trip (pics and vid)
« on: Mar 19, 2018, 07:35 PM »
Fished a couple days on Moosehead just before this most recent storm.  We didn't get any wall hangers but we had a good time.  I wasn't sure my auger was going to make it all the way to the water.  Fish on!

Here is a link to the vid on youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGQ44keGSDY

Wish my trip had worked out like that! Beautiful salmon! Wasn't too much fun drilling holes with 2 1/2 feet of snow on top of that

Great video Chris, real nice fish.
May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

Welcome to the southern part of northern Maine. ;D
I'm just here to read what all the experts have to say.

I appreciate the comments. It is always great to sneak off for a random long weekend on the ice.  As for food, we try to do it up right!!  Thanks.

I thought Northern Maine was closed to fishing Oct. 1 to March 31. I mean im just a tax paying resident but what do i know. Straight from the law book. Northern counties October 1 to March 31: Closed to all fishing. Northern and Southern counties Oct. 1 to Mar 31 Rivers, brooks and streams. NO FISHING

There are exceptions to every rule! Look further in the book under Moosehead Lake and it gives the laws for Moosehead. You will see it's open to ice fishing. Apply a to many other waters in "Northern Counties".

I see the exception B not A. How about the exception that i have to hoof it a mile on foot. While the snowmachine drivers ride on an atv trail and onto the ice. But i cant walk onto the ice to fish it because there is no public access. The ATVs cause so much damage too much traffic in an area over a long period of time can change the ecosystem forever.

MOOSEHEAD LAKE, Greenville, etc. (North
Region).
Ice fishing: Moosehead Lake. General fishing
laws apply, except: B. S-1, S-21. Minimum
length limit on togue: 14 inches. Daily bag limit
on togue: 5 fish (only 1 togue may be greater
than 18 inches; all 5 may be between 14 - 18
inches). Closed to taking landlocked salmon
until February 15: then S-22; minimum length
limit on landlocked salmon: 18 inches. Prior to
February 15, all landlocked salmon caught must
be released alive without removing the fish from
the water.

Pretty cut and dry on the rules for ice fishing.

I'm pretty sure you can hoof it on that same ATV trail the snowmobiles are using. Luckily for snowmobile and ATV trail systems we do have access to some remote ponds and lakes. I suppose the state could just take over land and build roads right to them.

Just because you don’t have he advantage of having an at/snowmobile doesn’t mean others shouldn’t be able to use theirs. I don’t have one either, but having the trails there make it a lot easier for people to walk on the packed snow to get to those places that don’t have a road and boat launch. There are many places you can’t bring a boat into due to access,  but during winter your able to park along the road and just walk out there.

Moosehead has almost unlimited public access. In fact, any ice you can ride a sled to on legal trails, you could walk the same route, only you don't have to pay cash money like I do for a sticker to ride my snowmobile on it.

Anyway, back on topic, nice video! Thanks for sharing.
