Super loose tip up reels
« on: Jan 22, 2018, 11:30 AM »
Greetings & Fat Lunkers to All...!!!

I've been a member for a few years but I'm not a big computer guy so my time and participation on here has been very limited...firstly I'd like to thank everyone on here for having a great group that's fun and informative ....I plan on coming on much more often ...
Next is I have a dilemma...I came across these sweet vintage tip ups that had never seen water.... I spooled em up and they work great, EXCEPT, the reels are wicked loose & if a fish takes off super fast the reel like doubles up (and snags a lot of times).... Any ideas on how to make the reel tighter Or slow it down I should say? Appreciate any feedback....  Tight Lines out there Still Plentyyyyyy of accessible Hardwater!!!

If you can take the pin out that is holding the reel you can change it out with a long threaded screw and then use a wing nut with a washer to slow it down. Closer pics of the reels would be great.
Just add water.

Pretty much duplicating a heritage laker.

- Some kind of little fin sticking off the front of the spool to give it some resistance against the water as it spins.   Don't ask me how to do it. But it would work.

I had some old tip ups with those spools. Pull that pin out thats holding the spool in and get a Bolt that will fit thru the spool. Use a nylon bushing that you can fit over the bolt between the spool and the tip up then screw the bolt into the tip up. Make sure the bushing is long enough to allow your trip mechanism to still work. You can then tighten and loosen the bolt to your desired spool tension.

If you want to get real fancy, they make a nylon bushing that you can snap into each side of the spool, it rides much Smoother on the metal bolt than metal on metal. Thats how i did mine. I can post pics later if you are interested.

Keep in mind that traps fish best with no spool drag whatsoever.  Is this truly happening under the ice or are You seeing it with “dry” experimentation? Are you using tip up line? do you have a long leader of mono wrapped on the spool?  Usually , the pond water is all that’s needed to prevent this from happening.   A split shot 18” above the bait helps prevent this as well.

I even have a trap with bearings that doesn’t suffer this problem.

I have those tilts, and still use them! LOL   Bought them at Spags back in the late 1970's. There's no real adjustment to the reel. It's just a nail driven though the wood with a plastic spacer between the reel and the wood. I've never had any backlashing issues though....

Good luck

I use to have a bunch of those tip ups years ago. Not sure who made them but Spags use to carry bucket loads of them back in the day.

You should be able to tap that nail in a little with a nail punch and it should tighten the reel a bit, just don't go at it too hard, just a light tap should do it.

I have a dozen or so Tip ups just like yours from the 60's and 70's and now and then I will tap the nail in a little to firm it up some.

Look like nice rigs, spools look like they are good size.

Never had any issues with backlash from a fish, only from me pulling the line off too quickly during set up.

I build traps of my own and this is exactly how i make them and b=never have an issue. Using big bait for Pike, tighten the wing nut. Going for crappie or trout, loosen the wingnut. No tools needed and you can change the species you target in 1 second.
Just add water.

Here are the pics of mine with the Nylon insert to make is ride smoother on the bolt. I screwed the bolt into the tip up so the spool rides on the smooth part of the bolt instead of the threads.

O hey that's great appreciate all the input very much....really like the bolt & wingnut idea Imma try to get that process in the works asap....
So the last time I used them I got a flag and I was running over and I could actually hear the thing zipping like mad.....when I was 10ft away that's when it let's say backlashed like a baitcaster and got caught, trap FLEW across the hole smashed into the side of the hole and set the hook on a 4.5# Larry... It was a violent scene ,hahaha... I thanked the trap for the assistance and said sh*t that could be an issue....  I'll post pics of the back side of reel tomorrow thanks again to All!!!

Those are Riverside Mfg. tilts, they were made in Holden Mass, by the Maki Family. Great color.

Would I put the spring over the nylon spacer?  Went to hardware store they only had all threaded bolts (could I put electrical tape around threads that r going thru the spool?)

Unless I'm wrong, if you have a sleeve on either side of the spool, I don't think it would make any difference if the bolt is fully threaded.

Your biggest downfall of fully threaded will be near zero temps when the ice will keep forming in between the threads instead of uniformly breaking off. you could try a little grease.
Just add water.

No do not use electrical tape it will not hold up, become unraveled and slow the spool.  I don't think you would be happy with spool pins that are fully threaded I think the spool would rattle around..  You can buy spool pins from the heritage laker site online they cost 5-6$ for a set of 5.  You can probably get the rest of the parts you are looking for also.

The only time I learn something is when I'm not talking.
