Title: Lake Diefenbaker -2020-2021
Post by: burbotmachine on Nov 09, 2020, 04:29 PM
What is the ice thickness around bays and coulees? ???

I have another question about Dief....are all the road accesses in the Prov Parks unmaintained in the winter???  Also...from what I have experienced...the better trout fishing is more towards the east/ dam area as opposed to my usual spots near sask landing and beaver flats????  Have also fished near the fish farm but not much for trout...just seemed to be into eyes/ burbs and pike and whiteys etc etc ???

How do you catch whitefish on dief?  I watch them swim throughout the water column on my camera, I can get them to come and look at my lure but they never show any interest in biting.  My goal this ice season is to catch one of them but have no clue what makes them bite.

Wire worm for whitefish or something really small. A good tip is to put an inline lure ( like a dropshot) over a bigger lure like a jigging spoon.

Because of the changing water level I have stayed off this lake till at least 12" of ice for walk on.  Is this not necessary, is the ice as good as any other lake at 4"?  Anyone have experience?

No heads up on ice conditions so I checked myself. At couteau bay were I wanted to try to fish only 5 inch white ice. I could see signs of guys fishing but too sketchy for me. Drove to elbow and 7 inch good solid black ice in tuffs.

East of Gardiner Dam, ice is 8 inch today in the bay with a few inch of snow. 50 yards out on the main lake, black ice is 3 to 4 inch without snow cover as shown.

A good area to maybe try would be in the Elbow Harbour/Tufts Bay area. Try shallow. The ice is still not safe to travel on with a vehicle. Good luck.

I was at Danielson before sun up yesterday. I fished until 10:30 and had two bites and registered a half dozen marks. I lost a trout at the hole when the line fouled the flasher cord. Not much room for error in six feet of water. I talked to a couple other guys on the walk out.
One of them had three trout on, but none made it out of the hole.

That was just enough to make me want to try again with some different terminal tackle. I need a feed of mid winter smoked trout.

Fake News Church.

Those were captive fish in a pond so small they kept foul hooking themselves. I am after the magnificent wild rainbows of the mighty Lake Diefenbaker that spawn in the crystal clear streams that flow into Coteau Bay.

Those poor starved dugout trout would latch onto your pinky if you dangled it long enough down the hole.

Good morning all,
wondering about ice conditions around Elbow and Tufts bay after the wind storm the other night.   Usually I get my info from my dad, but he hasn't been in town the past few days.  Is the ice safe enough for half tons, shacks, etc.  Still planning to go out this weekend.

This has never happened to me before.  When I hole hop I suspend my little revolution camera roughly three feet above the bait and jig. I like to see what is down there.  I did this Friday on Dief when the image went black then I saw the squirmy form of a burbot.  I quickly raised the bait to the camera level and the burb immediately went for the lure.  Now I am a little worried the small camera may be damaged or ripped off the cable if a burb decides it is not going to spit it out.  One of the risks of high tech fishing.

I have had both burbot and pike try and make a meal of my underwater camera several times now. Tooth marks here and there on the camera and scratches on the cord.
I even had a ranbow trout whack the camera with it's nose. :o
I could see a small camera getting damaged by a pike, burbot or lake trout. :P

Wow ran7ger, that burbot was on a misson to eat. @)
It must have felt the pulses from the transducer and thought it was food.
I think that underwater cameras also give off an energy field that the fish sometimes home in on.

depends on where you go and who you talk to.  there are those that will be tight lipped on their success and where their catching. its been slow for me the few times out this winter so far for walleyes but haven't really got out to the areas i am planning on yet. ice thickness reports are looking good on parts of the main lake.

New to ice fishing and have never ice fished on Lake Diefenbaker. Interested in going to Coteau Bay. Can you drive on the ice from the Danielson Boat Ramp? I have heard the ice doesn't get very good near the shore. How much snow is one the ice, can a 2 wheel drive vehicle get on the ice?

Went to Lenore Lake but the depth of snow on the ice prevented us from getting more than a couple hundred meters from the access point.

Any guidance or advice anyone can provide is appreciated.

Fished Danielson for trout this morning and had no problems driving on and off with 4X4. Getting off might be an issue for 2WD.
The ice was at least 18 inches, plenty safe in the bay, but nobody ventured beyond the mouth.

Yet again the trout mocked our puny efforts. Tip ups were triggered, minnows were stolen and fleeting marks were observed.

We decided to pack up and head for deeper waters in search of walleye. This was a good plan as we found them between 25 and 42 feet of water. The bite in the afternoon produced some good fish, but the 5:00 to 5:30 period was down right hectic. We ended up catching nine, but losing a number of others. They were still biting at 7:00 when we shut it down. I got to see quite a few work the baits on camera.

I am thinking the Diefenbaker walleye is an entirely different species than those aloof Blackstrap fish that look the same but ignore all my lures. The Diefenbaker fish munched away on at least six different bait / lure combinations; sometimes slurping delicately, and sometimes charging in with reckless abandon. Good fun.

We went done the road after the information centre and before the boat launch. There were a couple of tents on the ice. We spent 4.5 hrs on the ice. Saw a pike and perch. Managed to land a nice Walleye and Burbot. Fishing in 31 feet of water. Will be back to try this spot again.

Good fun.

Is beyond the mouth not safe to access by driving? Like is the ice not thick enough? Or it’s just featureless and all the fish in the lake just stick to bays?

Be careful driving anywhere on this lake. Be sure to check ice and know your exact route. In my experience the ice can very ALOT. There is changing water levels and gas wells. You can go from 2 feet of ice to just inches within a small area. Be careful if you don't know the lake. I've been fishing here for Years and I still rarely drive on.
Title: Re: Lake Diefenbaker -2020-2021
Post by: speckspotter on Feb 01, 2021, 07:20 AM
Diefenbaker can be a very dangerous lake due to methane gas pockets that cause open water spots when all the ice around is thick and safe. There has been plenty of talk about these pockets on this site. I spoke to a local two days ago who warned me of such a pocket just a few hundred yards south of where we were fishing. He said he only discovered it last year. As we chatted, he told me he had put his truck through around an island years back. Another guy from the area dropped his truck into 12 feet of water and "saw the bottom of the lake". He made it to the surface, but his buddy drowned half way out the window.

Add pressure heaves to the equation, and that is reason enough for me not to tempt the fates. When I drive on, I want to see tracks to follow, and make sure they keep on going. Losing those tracks in poor visibility is a real concern if the wind picks up, the snow falls or one gets disoriented in the dark.

Until they invent a hover truck, I'll leave freelancing around Diefenbaker to those who know it far better than I.

Is there any areas we are not allowed to fish near Gardiner damn? I like the depths in the Pump House Bay, and it looks like I can walk the sled on by the looks of the satellite map. I don't want to risk my car on the ice after all of your guys horror stories...

No restrictions by dam. Pump house bay is a good spot to walk on. You can't drive on at that location anyway. I've seen guys drive on at Danielson and head north to pump house. Not a trek I would advise.

Going to try Diefenbaker again this weekend. What are the chances an auger extension would be required?  There is probably a lot a variations year to year but how often is an auger extension required? Is it the kind of thing you use once or twice a year or once or twice a decade? Should I be running out to get one tonight just in case?

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance.

I was also out earlier in the week and there was about 18" of ice. You shouldn't need an extension yet but it would be a good idea to get one in the near future. Quite often I have to put mine on in late winter or early spring. A fairly inexpensive purchase versus driving all the way to the lake and finding you can't get a hole through the ice and having to turn around and go home.
Good luck and tight lines.

What is the best way to access snakebite bay in the winter without a sled/quad?  Is it just best to wait until the ice is thick enough to drive there or any accessible land access points?  Looks almost entirely private land on the north shore.

Learned something Friday.  Six hours in an ice fishing tent, -30ish, with a camera down an unwatched hole will lead to a camera cable bedded into the hole wall from top to bottom.  Mine was under a 1/2 inch of ice.  Lost feeling in three fingers whlle spudding down over two feet to free it.  Camera still works but I have not had the nerve to inspect for cable damage yet.  And another thing, the buddy heater can become temperamental in extreme cold, cylinders were warm, something in the regulation was sticking.

Ended up on Tuffs Bay today. First time there. Surprised how fast it gets deep. Went past a couple of huts and first hole was 106'. Moved closer to shore and settled at 35'. Ice was thick enough I could just get through without an extension but got my hands wet in the process.

Three people in our group and only managed to get two Burbot and saw one white fish that swam around our bait for about 20 minutes but wouldn't even take a taste.

The struggle is real this year for me for sure. I have been fishing Dief a lot this winter trying to get it dialed in, but it has been tough. By chance we were at Tufts Bay on Sunday as well. Super slow... although jpicks managed to land a 36" ~15lb Pike.  The CO's stopped by around 11:30ish. They said it has been slow for the last two weeks and that pike was biggest they had seen in about the last 10 days or so.  Hopefully it picks up soon.

Pretty good day out yesterday targeting walleye. The afternoon yielded a fat perch at 35 feet, and two small walleye at 70! I was trying a few new holes when it suddenly got deep but marks were showing on the flasher. I thought maybe these were whitefish. I had to keep these two since they showed no sign of reviving coming up from such depths. The sunset bite got really good at 27 feet. Before I lost light there were as many as three walleye on the camera at one time. Seven more saw the surface with numerous others that hit and got off.
No problem releasing these fish. Another jumbo perch hit at 7:10, and I thought I finally had a bragging walleye on shortly after. A great battle produced a big burbot instead - one ugly consolation prize.

I did see quite a few Burbot starting around 3 or 4 pm come up from the depths to about 20ft. They ignored all my my lures and ate my minnows I dropped instead. Next time I'll just set a treble through a minnow and leave it on bottom I think.

Was anybody out after walleye on this gorgeous day? I fished an area that has a pretty good evening bite, but usually produces some kind of action in the afternoon. Today I fished from 12:30 to 6:30 pm and could barely raise a mark. Not a single nibble from four feet out to fifty, with a lot of holes punched in between. At 6:35, a walleye just swam right up to the lure and inhaled it. This was the start of a classic end of day bite, and a pretty good one to boot.

Was the afternoon slow for others? I have no complaints about the end result, but wonder why the fish were so inactive, or if they simply weren't where they have been during the day?

Landing over a dozen.with a mixture of sizes. And probably as many got off or I didn’t get a good hook set. Unreal day putting in a full shift . Lots of  baitfish on the electronics 0 perch were caught and 0 pike kinda weird? No whites or burbs hoping for a few burbs maybe next trip. The big one measured in at 26 3/4 “

Different bite again last night. The walleye started hitting aggressively in deep water an hour before sundown. The night bite was more tentative with a lot of subtle slurps and nibbles. 15 were brought to the surface with a better average size than previous outings. Again, no gravid females.

Today may just have been a case of March Madness. The bite started earlier at 5:00 in around 37 FOW. A perch and two walleye committed themselves over the space of 20 minutes. I had set the jaw jacker up ten feet shallower in the "evening honey hole". The rod popped before 5:30. No fish. After resetting everything I walked back to my active hole only to see the jacker tripped again. Reset. By this time the deep school had moved on, but again the jacker was triggered. "Well, they must be shallower earlier." Move to the honey hole and reset again, but this time with a stinger hook. After losing a nice walleye that I saw take the hook on camera, an absolute horse showed up and been attacking my spoon. Not the hook, just the spoon. The bottom was as stirred up as I was was when the jaw jacker sprung a fourth time. AHHHHH!!!! What to do?
The stinger had done its job and when I returned to the camera hole, the big one was again smacking the spoon. After two more hits, she finally inhaled the business end of things. She was between 23 and 24 inches and went back down the hole after a quick measure and photo. All said and done before I lost camera light. Too much fun.

I was a little concerned with the large cracks near the north boat launch and the sound of running water in it. Likely the melt water from the parking area and bank but I wonder how much it is eroding under the ice.

I made my buddy promise me he would kick my ass if I proposed another drive onto the ice at Dief after we fished it last Saturday. He proposed shooting my new tires out instead. It was good ice then, but the ice we drilled through on Blackstrap yesterday (which is substantially thicker than Dief) was already pretty soft and wet. After today it will only be less safe.

That's my two cents worth, but I have sadly bid farewell to a very productive walleye spot for the season.

The ice was wet about half way down on Saturday March 20. It was easier to drill through than a week a go. I was in Coteau Bay, and caught 2 perch. That's it.

Just another awesome day for my last trip to the big lake for the hard water season. Slow for the most part picked up some walleyes late morning from 9 to 1030 then nothing for the rest of day. Marking but no takers. Did get this PB white around the 2 pm hour what a beast to handle. Took me on a few runs. She released fine. Had myself a great season at deifenbaker this year.

Fished the last day from late afternoon till dark. Ice was holding better than recent years. Met two like-minded fisherman after dark :).
