Battery charging question
« on: May 10, 2020, 07:07 AM »
Can a charger made for a 7amp battery charge a 9amp battery? I let my battery entirely run down this season and the unit (hummingbird) came with a 7amp battery. Would like to upgrade to a 9amp battery and not have to get a different charger. Thanks in advance & Happy Mothers Day to all the mom's out there!

Simple answer is Yes.  You will be happier with the 9 amp.

What kind of charger are you using?  I would highly recommend using a maintainer-type charger.  It keeps the battery charged at the optimal level and you don't have to worry about how long you leave the charger on.

The op was trying not to buy another charger.  One thing to remember is all battery maintainers are not built equal and some will shorten the life of a battery ask me I learned the hard way.

just the stock charger that came with the unit

Not really worried about charging time, if it takes a little longer, so be it.

That's interesting, what charger did you use that shortened the life of your battery?  I've had good luck with my Battery Tender Jr.  I use it for my 9AH SLA battery, as well as to keep my boat batteries topped off in the off-season.
