St.Croix Skandic Ice Rod ML 28”
« on: Jan 23, 2023, 09:47 PM »

Will the medium light St. Croix Skandic rod have enough backbone to handle Kokanee and Rainbows weighing up to 2 lbs?  My jigging set up is a Williams warbler size 80, a small tungsten hook, piece of corn, meal worm or shrimp. Thanks.

It depends but mostly the answer is yes.  It depends on how much control one prefers.  The Skandic rods are brand new models this season so...if compare to other previous St. Croix ML ice rods  to see if their action and power are close.

I am in the middle of dealing with St. Croix and an issue with this rod.

Of course I sent an email and got a stupid response from them about sending it for service.

The eyelet at the tip SUCKS - my line gets caught on it. I will add some photos and a video to the post.

I am displeased with the rod and considering the cost makes it even worse.

This is a movie of it - you can see when I jig it the line gets caught around the tip creating slack and I've missed fish because it's not sensitive to the bite - and then you end up with .5" of slack in the line when going to set it. If you listen you can hear the line clicking when I jig which is also fraying my braid.

Braid lines are not your friend especially with those wire tip guide design on those.

Wow, thanks for posting the video. I hope you can work out something with St. Croix.

I also have a bit of buyers remorse. After a couple days on the lake, I’m finding my new rod is a bit too soft. Great sensitivity and feel but just not enough backbone to set the hook. I have to keep the rod, but will still look for something else.

I see the 32” M St. Croix Mojo is on sale at moment. If anyone has experience with this rod, I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

For the St. Croix ice rods, there is a significant step up from ML to M power.  Their M power has traditionally been more like a M+ or even to some people a MH- power rod.

I have to ask what line are you using for braid ? It looks very thick in the pictures.

Here is some gathered data in regards to tip load on a 1 oz. weight for ML rods.

St Croix Mojo ML 28" dropped 4 1/4"
13 Wicked Ice ML 26.5" dropped  1 1/2"
Clam Ice Team Carbon Ice ML 32" dropped 2 7/8"
St Croix Premier ML 28" dropped 3 3/4"
13 Whiteout ML 27.5" dropped 3"
Fenwick Aetos Ice ML 28" dropped 2"

The St. Croix Mojo ML is the softest rod of the group.  It's predecessor the Premier ice ML had just a little bit more tip power.

Thanks for posting the data, there’s so much to be learned.  I live in a small BC community and can not check them out before I buy.

You're welcome.

And what one person likes, may not suit another.  What one manufacture label as a ML rod power can be very different from another manufacture label, and even among their different models.
