Chaumont Feb 3-5
« on: Jan 17, 2023, 10:05 AM »
Asking those with knowledge of Chaumont to gaze into their crystal ball….

We got motel booked for February 3-5.  What are the chances we can get out?  4 guys hoping to access via side by side (Honda pioneer).

We’re about a 5 hour drive to Chaumont and never fished it.  We’ve fished bay of quinte for many many years, but (in our opinions) that fishery is not what it was 20 years ago.  So we’re looking at new waters to try.  We all live in NY so also nice not buying non res licenses.

Thanks!

Agreed...Chaumont Hardware fb is the local authority on ice conditions - and he posts daily.

For the occasional drone video - visit Chaumont Masters fb page (guide service and lodging).  Louis runs a top notch outfit..!

Chaumont Masters is also a sponsor to Ice Shanty.

I do check it, and yes, great info.

I guess what I’m wondering …will current ice conditions + extended weather forecast = drivable ice by Feb 3.  I know, lots of variables.  Maybe answers I’m looking for would be;

Maybe.

No. Go ahead and cancel the motel.

Cold snap the week before will lock it up and you should be good.

I’m far from a chaumont regular. Only ever fished it twice but I got some buddies that keep close tabs on it and by the sounds of it even if the whole bay isn’t safe you should be able to find some fishable ice by then. Sandy pond isn’t to far from there either as a back up option. Me and some friends are thinking about heading to fish one of the 2 this weekend keep ya updated if we do

I don't practice Santeria, i aint got no crystal ball...

But I would venture to say it will be machine driveable by then. Its all mostly walkable now.

Are you able to walk out if needed? Depending on your goals its a mile or two walk. You can get on perch and walleye from long Point State Park with a much shorter walk as well. You might also be able to go to other nearby waters like Lake of the Isles, Eel bay, or inland lakes and use your machine.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback!

2 guys in our group are 70, so they’re not walking out over a mile.  And to be honest, I’m not real keen on it either.

It’s going to be a last minute decision by the looks of it, and luckily the motel is super understanding and realizes the situation - letting us cancel with no problems if need be.

I’ll keep checking updates and call as we get closer.

Plenty of ice in deep water in 300 to 400 yards or less from access spots. I am 63. Check in at hardware store.

I would bet there will b machines out before February ….. I would worry about deep snow showing up before your trip, temperatures look to b seasonal for the near future…

Paleo...

Agree with all information here.

If Chaumont is the target - minimally it will be walkable.  Checking in with Greg at Chaumont Hardware and he can point to easiest access if walking.  But it's a different world up there - and it's frequently colder than advertised.  Machines may likely be on the table by then.

As others have said - nearby is Sandy Pond (let's hear it from the Pond rats!) in the Pulaski/Sandy Creek area.  Lodging nearby at The Scheppards Hook Motel.    Sandy Pond produced lots of perch last year.  Previous posts say "Sandy Pond is open for business" but avoi the island
near the main channel to Lake Ontario

Feeling International?  Cross the first span of the international bridge on 81N and exit Wellesley island.  Eel Bay and LOTI (lake of the Isles) on the St. Lawrence.  Still in the USA.  but you can about throw a rock and hit Canada from there.  Lots of variety...perch pickeral, northern and the occasional bass.  Find DeWolf State Park...easy access...easy walk.

Sadly...I'll be missing out on the (first?) ice action as we're headed off to Tampa to see kids / grandkid.
Looking at booking a shark fishing trip out of Ruskin area.

Good Luck and tight lines.

My guess is CFS means cubic feet per second... high CFS means current is moving.

I’m sure the bite is pretty good considering just north of there was this weekend for perch and northerns.
I prefer a 2oz sinker for perch...when it hits 'em they won't feel a thing

Last I knew the launch in Sackets is closed for construction/repair.

I would expect the small launches on military rd and dexter marsh would be too iced up to launch a boat but too open to ice fish.
