Ice surface conditions - in general - Adirondacks
« on: Jan 14, 2023, 07:20 AM »
Not looking for exact reports, but in general, what are the lakes looking like in terms of walking in the central Adirondacks?

Slush?
Snow?
Bare ice?

Just trying to get a sense of things before we head up tomorrow. Have my young son with me and don’t want to take on more than he can handle.

We drove from CNY to our place in Wilmington yesterday - Drove by White Lake, Otter Lake, Fulton Chain, 7th,  Raquette, Blue, Long, horseshoe,, Tupper and Saranac Lakes - with the exception of Raquette I wouldn’t walk on any of them, especially if your bringing your son - ice is thin and open water observed on many  … there are of course ponds around that are walkable, but I’m just commenting on what I saw on the ride …. There is some snow, couple of inches, more in different spots as you head north of Long ….. good luck and be safe !!

Thanks! Not considering any of those. Looking at smaller water.

Someone posted a follow up on one of the FB pages saying the guy who went in eventually self-rescued when emergency responders couldn’t get to him.

Can't imagine why the emergency crews had a tough time as there were no reports of bad weather    My nephew lives in Wells and he said nothing there

Lakes of a little snow here and there,, generally glare ice.
On the rescue on Sacandaga, call came in app. 4:30 am yesterday. Subject about 20 ft. From shore when ice was breaking apart. He wound up finding safe ice to get off lake. A first responder lost control of his vehicle on campsite road, and crashed. Campsite road was glare ice, due to rains a few days ago.

Abanakee has 6-8 inches. East side of Indian up north has 8-10, and about 8 inches on west side. 6-8 inches southern end near campsite.

This thread is not about thickness/quality of ice. It is about surface and walking conditions, for example: snow depth, snow type, bare ice, slush, etc.

Useful info for those with kids or people who are on foot or those who may have health/fitness considerations.

Most of the lakes i have driven by or been on have glare ice with frequent patches of snow all around. Would highly advise a good set of micro spikes

Thanks!

Looking for an update now though. Sounds like there was some snow up near Speculator.

Have thought about Abenakee many times but have just not made it yet. I'm not much of a pike guy, is there any thing else in there worth while, How's the perch-panfish population

Finally got out up there. Maybe three inches of snow on Lewey. More coming tonight. Very easy walking and pulling.

Basically pike. Does have perch, but generally small.
