Those are some good ideas!  I also just got myself a snowmobile for my ice travels.  Juan, I really like that auger setup...I may have to contact you to check that out, looks really nice.

I have ice scratchers on my sled but rarely have to use them. They do help in liow snow conditions. You really have to remember to disengague them before going in reverse.

What style do you have mounted on your sled? I'm debating between the running board mounted ones, or the new cable style ones from Yamaha with the replaceable carbide tips, and mounting them on my belly pan.

Mine mount on the running boards. Kind of expensive for what they are. I saw a video for some new type of scratchers. It is basicly a nut and bolt in the rear of your ski. You drill a whole at the back of your ski. Drop a bolt down through and add a bolt and washer from the underside of the ski to hold it on. So the head of the bolt is on the top of the ski. The video shows it working great. It is an inexpensive way I would do it next time especially if I were just running the lakes/ice.

I had seen the bolt method, but I'm not sure they'll work on my sled at the slow speeds I travel.

I think your right that at slow speed there may not be enough snow/ice kicked up. An inexpensive way to find out though.

Very true, odds are I'll give it a shot and see how well it performs.

My shelter rack is completed! Also added windshield storage bag and RAM GPS mount. Kinda stalled on the auger rack, which is next.

Bart -

Does your trailer close with the rack on?

Also, a word of warning, don't make your auger rack too tall. ;)

I really like being able to transport my auger on the rack in the trailer.

Mainedog, So far all fits in with the trailer closed up. Like you I want to have the auger on board all closed up. I want to be able to drive on/drive off all loaded for the ice. I plan on the auger rack working off the front bumper. I'm also placing another tie down in the center of the trailer to accommodate the auger loaded on the sled.

Thanks again to everyone for sharing their experience and information, it was a great help with design and planning. A little stalled on the auger rack, any ideas? One question I do have, should the auger be supported at the handle and the chuck(engine/auger connection) or is just at the chuck sufficient support for the engine end of the auger?

When you say chuck, you mean the very end of the bit?
If so, I've heard that's a bad idea.  It puts too much stress on the gears, etc.
when bouncing around.  You need to support the motor some how.
I only put the motor on when going slow, short distances--once at the fishing
location.

The chuck is where the auger is attached to the engine, same as a drill bit is placed in a drill.

Nice Rig!  Looks like you need some ski slides and a track mat for your trailer?  Your studs and carbides will tear that floor up pretty quick.

looks pretty asome so far. The more support for your auger the less chance of bending the shaft. The more comfortable you get with the gear on the faster you'll go. It can really get quite bumpy.

I got the scratchers on, should help on the bare ice. Ski slides and track mat as JIMC ND recommended are next, thanks again all for sharing their advice and experience.

Ski slides and track mat are in place, a thanks out to JIMC ND. The auger rack may have to be a warmer weather project...

First problems with the reverse, then speedometer, a Safety Alert Notice...

Yesterday I finally had the Safety Alert Notice(A-arm bracket)corrected? after three weeks. The speedometer was also replaced.

Today it wouldn't start, the Starter is shot. A new one is ordered and maybe in next week. So much for a reliable machine...

BASED ON MY EXPRIENCE MY ADVICE STANDS, DON'T BUY ARTIC CAT!

Sorry to hear that  Bart, after you've spent so much time getting this thing all set up, and I'm sure considerable excitement. That's pretty bad for a brand new sled to have all those problems. Hope it gets fixed and this is the last of the headaches.....cuz that is still a sweet setup for ice fishing!

First time on the ice today, it's the cat's a$$. Can't wait to get an auger rack on the front bumper, a little spot for the scoop, shovel and flasher outside of the shanty too...

Sorry to hear about your sled issues.  Two of the three new sleds I have purchased, I have had "issues" with the first year.  Once those issues were worked out, the sleds were very reliable.  Hope this holds for you.  Once you get a sled set up to your liking, it can really make fishing more enjoyable and productive.

I finally got the Auger Rack done. I also added a bait bucket bracket, there's one on each side. I am hoping to find a small/taller bucket that will fill one bracket, for the scoop and a couple of rods. It all tucks in well in the trailer, can't wait to get her on the ice!

Great set up. How well does that stud pattern work on bare ice? I've been researching them for my new sled, but don't have enough cash to do every row like is suggested. I might be able to swing every other row like you did. I'm going to get the same scratchers, I know I'd end up ruining the old style going into reverse without lifting them.

Very nice Bart.
Please post some pics that show how the rack is mounted to the sled.
Can you still open the hood on the sled with the rack on it?
