Bait in bulk
« on: Oct 07, 2019, 08:57 AM »
I know it's still early but I wanted to start thinking about where I'm getting my bait this year. Bought my own house so I finally have room to set up my big bait tank again. When CTO was open I used to keep about 14doz at a time so I didn't have to worry about hitting up bait shops all the time. They sold it by the lb and was a good deal. I'm up in Enfield and don't know where the closest place that has a good deal on bulk bait of
The BIG one is just one flag away!

Species caught : largemouth, smallmouth,  bluegill, perch, White perch, crappie, trout, catfish, bowfin, pickerel, pike

Congrats on the house Ravo.

Not sure if Tag's is the closest to you, but I believe he sells in bulk.

So easy to trap your own, and fun. I bought a minnow trap in your town and was blown away the next morning with how many were in it.
I plan to live forever. So far so good!

I have a trap, and I was told to use dog food to attract bait. I have had zero luck. Whats the trick?

I have heard that Granby Bait and tackle in MA sells wholesale/bulk bait, but I have never personally gone there.

Personally I've done better with cat food. Is it really much different? Idk but seems to make a difference. Maybe throw a couple pieces of bread in there too.

X2.  I think if you buy enough of them they will sell it by the pound.  They are the distributor for the large majority of shops in the area.  Give them a call.  They are pretty good about answering.

That's unfortunate.  Curious if they require you to have a retail license in order to buy by the pound.  I'd guess there is some concern that the person could resell them without the proper paperwork.

She said it wouldn't be fair to their wholesalers.

Just controlling the market.  You can go to Tom's in Mass and buy by the pound no problem.

Yes he will.  Short of that the cost to obtain a bait dealers license is cheaper than what many spend in time and money trapping and keeping their own bait.

yes but what is weird is I have 2 tanks for storing shiners. I bought 4 dozen to start my tank cycling and have my water checked every other day, water has been perfect and change water (1/2) every 3 days(*60 gallon freezer. The temp is at 40* +/- 2*. I started losing shiners day 2. After a couple of weeks of losing shiners I started adding some goldies trapped locally by a friend. Now, 6 weeks later all the store bought shiners are dead but not 1 goldie has died...water still perfect.

Sly they are both the same species so my guess is the baitshop bait had a rough existence before you got to them.

I actually found out you can apparently buy live Rosie reds in bulk on Amazon. You can get 500 2-3"fish for 90 bucks so I'd my math is right it's barely over 2 bucks a dozen. Trying to get a couple buddies to go in on it with me so we all have plenty of panfish and trout bait

Check out Anderson farms on line. I ordered 5# last year and they came in overnight. You will need to get a permit # from Deep but it's free.
