Berkley Trilene xl for ice
« on: Jan 25, 2015, 08:07 AM »
Hello
Would there be any problems using # 4 Trilene xl monofilaments for ice fishing perch?...I use this strictly for open water, however I was told this would not work well for hard water because of icing issues. I was planning on going fishing tomorrow, however it appears all the local shops are out of ice fishing line. Just curious if I could use the trilene as it appears I may have no choice.
Thanks

I have it on 2# on one of my rods.  No problems.  Iced 10 nice perch with that rod yesterday in fact.

Absolutely it will work fine...I personally downsize to a  2lb trilene ice leader for lower visibility. but its not necessary.

I think they just add the name "ice line" give you less line, and charge more for it.

For heavy baits it should work well. I tried it for panfish and it did not work well. It was about like trilene cold weather, junk. I can absolutely tell the difference between it and micro ice.

I've used Berkley line all my life till about four years ago.
I still use Berkley line but I tip my reels with Berkley Micro ice about 15 yds.
I fish mostly shallow lakes for pannies the micro ice is a tuff line.

I've used it before and like it better than some of the ice lines and the added bonus it's cheap.

Using it now on my micro light rod 4lb. No problems. I think 2lb would be better although I am scared of breaking fish off or nicking it on the ice. Use it up.
Fish On!
