Vexilar Question
« on: Feb 09, 2010, 07:04 PM »
I have noticed the last couple times I have gone out, that whenever I drop a line there are green marks following my jig down.  Eventually they disappear, within 20 seconds or so.  Ususally it only happens when I am using minnows, but it has done it with wax worms as well.  I know that the green flashes are nothing, but I'm just curious as to what is causing them.  I usually keep the gain around two if that helps with the answer.

That sounds right, it happens to me when feeding a very light jig down.

like everyone else, I get this too, as a matter of fact today.  BUT....I had no line coil at all, I was using tungston jigs with two pound. I was thinking maybe the wax worm bedding off the waxworm if its fresh out the the container or with the minnows it could be there scales??  Heck, this is just my guess though.

Have you ried turning your gain all the way down. What model do you have/ are you looking at the zoom mode on the FL-20?

My FL-12 does it and I think its just the LED screen. I had heard that LEDs dont like cold weather.

I've always assumed it was scales. But that is just a theory.

Just air bubbles off the bait or small particles of the bait. IMO

Have had this too especially with line coils but have also picked off a lot of crappies that close to bottom of ice.

I'm using an FL8SE; At first I thought it might be a coiled line, but I was using a Fiskas Tungsten that is pretty heavy.  I am glad that I am not the only one that experiences this.  My first thought was that my vex was shot.

Its is definitly line twist. Once your lure hits its final depth the weight usually pulls out the twists. Also an indication that it may be timew for new line.

Thanks.  I'll try changing out the line and let you know what I find.

I agree with G-town. I saw this a few times and looking down the hole i could see wax worm bedding floating. I would guess it's the same with minnows, bubbles or scales. I use a Marcum lx-3tc

That's just ice on your line. If it was twist, it would show up when you're in the shanty. It's even worse with say, Fireline Micro Ice or a similar braid as they tend to absorb more water and freeze more than mono. This is why it goes away after a minute or so, the water has melted the ice leaving nothing on your line to reflect sonar signals.Any solid obfect will reflect sonar, if your line is twisted it still won't reflect a signal due to the angle of the coils. Next time you see it, try dropping down a line that you haven't used yet & has no ice on it. You won't see those lines. It happens with Jiging raps and when I'm fishing with plastic too so it can't be anything from my bait. Just my opinion...
